The 1978 Football season opened with high hopes but a tough schedule and some very close losses dimmed many of those hopes. The Tigers still managed to post a respectable 5-5 record while giving their fans a season full of excitement. The season was highlighted by a thrilling 13-6 come-from-behind homecoming victory and by a 64-0 romp over M.M.A. The Tiger's schedule boasted two teams who made the state playoffs and two other teams that narrowly missed. During the season 24 players earned varsity letters and 11 Tigers earned some sort of All-Conference honors. Junior guard-linebacker Denny Gramke was named to the All District Second Team. 97 (1) David Salzman: “That’s the way fellas, hit ’em hard!’ (2) FRESHMAN FOOTBALL: Row 1: Todd Dobbins, Mike Side-bottom, Sonny Hixson, Marty Hansen, Jack Jobe, Dan Nickels, Richard Sollman. What’s more, how realistic is it for an athlete to compete under the same circumstances but who has never played the sport? Unrealistic or not, we do on the junior varsity level. Through a lot of stimulating workouts the young players accomplished much. The eleven member team put forth the effort to finish the season with a record of 7 wins and 4 losses. Losing in semi-final play seems very anticlimatic but for the varsity it was far from that. This years team and only one other team in Versailles history has ever gone as far in district competition. Every member played a vital role in the success of our 13 win 4 loss record. A carry-over of team pride and sheer determination on the part of each returning player will be a tremendous asset to the success of next years team. 101 (1) Miss Hodges expresses her feelings on the situation. COACH’S SUMMARY: Returning only one starter from the previous year, many people believed that the Versailles Tigers were in for a rebuilding season. Early, it appeared as if those people may have been right, however, the Tigers put together a strong finish to end up with a very respectable 12-11 year. Breaks seemed to go against the Tigers early as they hit the Christmas break with a 3-5 record. Poor free throw shooting plagued the Tigers as they lost close, tough ball-games to the likes of powers Clinton and Cole Camp. Versailles came back from Christmas with fire in their eyes and defeated both Osage and California to gain the finals of the prestigious California Tournament. Powerful Columbia Rock Bridge ended Versailles’s hope of claiming the title as they defeated the Tigers in the finals. The Tigers saved their best basketball for the end as they finished the last eight games with a 6-2 record. Victories came at some tough places as the Tigers posted wins over Jefferson City Helias and Osage on the loser’s home floor. Balance was the key to success for the Tigers and it showed in post season honors. John Thompson, Jeff Barnard, Ed Krciling, and David Terry all were named AU-Confer-ence. COACHES SUMMARY: The 1978-79 Girls Varsity Basketball team enjoyed one of the finest seasons that any girls team will have at Versailles. In only their third year of organized basketball the team won 14 games while losing only three. The Tigers tied for the conference championship with Camden-ton, a team who ended fourth in the State in their class. The Tigers won their own tourney, this marked the first time the Girls had won a tourney. One of the prime reasons for the success was an outstanding team effort on the part of the girls. Every person on the team made a significant contribution to the winning effort. The Tigers defeated the Camdenton Lakers twice during the season, but had to win an important game at Tipton in order to gain a tie for the conference title. The Tigers fell one game short of making it to the state playoffs when they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Windsor. It was a truly great year for Tigers Girls Basketball in 1978-79. The Tigers posted a 9-1 season mark, one of the best in the six years the sport has been at VHS. The Tigers opened slowly as they suffered their only defeat at the hands of Clinton. From there, the Tigers went undefeated. The highlights were victories over Camdcnton, Sedalia, Boonvillc, Slater, and then the rematch with Clinton. Versailles captured first place at the Marceline Quad with victories over Marceline, Higginsville, and Brookfield. The Tigers were fifth in the Boonvillc Tournament. While the Tigers scored 89 points, and a fifth place finish in the District Tournament, they qualified four wrestlers; Rick Campbell, Denny Gramke, Ken Campbell, and Steve Moritz for the Rcgionals at Butler. Denny Gramke and Ken Campbell competed for Versailles in the State Tournament. Versailles had fourteen lettermen with nine of those wrestlers returning next year. The Tigers wrestled tough in the season of 1978-79, but will continue to improve and it should bring on an exciting new season. Hendrickson won the district championship in the High Hurdles and in the Pole Vault. He won a state semi-finalist position in the Low Hurdles, and placed fourth in state Pole Vault competition. Brad Kohler set a new Discus mark of 135 2’ . Three Tigers qualified for state competition: Steve Fields-Pole Vault; Wade Chism-High Hurdles; Danny Hendrickson-Pole Vault, High Hurdles, and Low Hurdles.
