It is not just the study of Gram- mar, Composition, or Literature. Its goal is to create a versatile person. What is learned in Language Arts is used in other classes and in daily life. The language arts class should present a normal social situation to allow an ex- change of expression, both oral and written, realistically and imaginatively, about students’ opinions and feelings. It should furnish various experiences through liter- ature of both the past and present to provide enjoyment and emotional release con- ducive to wholesome personal development. The Language Arts Department provides several classes to fulfill these goals. Communications I and 11 are required classes and cover fundamental grammar and composition. Elective classes for Juniors and Seniors are American Conflicts in Lit- erature, Western Literature, Speech and Dramatics, and College Prep. Top right: A typical day in Drama I. Approximately seventy schools were represented. The coordinator was Marilyn Grechus, a gymnast and former CMSU cheerleader. The instructors were past and present cheerleaders from CMSU and MU. Cheers, chants, songs, money-making ideas, pep assembly ideas, and three pom pon routines were taught during the tiring 7 a.m.-10 p.m. a day week. There were evaluations everyday during which each squad did a cheer in front of the instructors and received criticisms. Our cheerleaders received good criticisms everytime-even once when they forgot the cheer because of their good recovery. Five spirit trophies were given out everyday to the squads who had been the most helpful and enthusiastic through the long days. The trophies were returned and re-awarded each day. The five squads who won the trophy three out of five days were given the trophy to take home to their schools-our Varsity squad received one of these trophies. On their way to a 20-6 record, the squad claimed the Tri-County title outright, the first time it has been won outright by Ver- sailles in 13 years. Also, the Tigers won the prestigious California Tourney with exciting victories over Glasgow and Rock Bridge. The Tigers lose five seniors, but return eight juniors to lead the attack next year. Not only did the participants learn first hand about hard work and disappointment, but they also experienced satisfaction in mastering basketball fundamentals and learning the value of teamwork. Both the varsity and the junior var- sity tasted victory only once, resulting in a 1-4 record for the varsity, and a 1-3 record for the junior varsity. How- ever, with one year of basic basketball instruction behind them, the girls and coaches can now look forward to the upcoming school year when more experience should make a difference in the total performance of the team. Only five lettermen returned from the pre- vious year and previous year and three of those were in the same class. Only two se- niors were team members. Yet some very talented young wrestlers and a lot of hard work led to the improvement that produces a winning season and some excellent tourna- ment performances. Coach Hodges’ Season Summary: The girls’ track team for the 1977 sea- son competed against a very high qual- ity of skill, especially from within the conference. Needless to say, this did not disillusion any of the members, as two school records were broken early in the season. The next few years ahead should hold the promise of a better and more experienced track team. Competing for the first time were: Jodi Bacon, Mitzi Couch, Angie Dan- iels, Kathy Eppenauer, Lynda Hanra- han, Judy Hutchison, and Kathy Slagle. A new mile record for the school was set by Lynda Hanrahan. Sophomore added much to the team this year. They were Cathy Brad- ley, Joan Junker, Joyce Junker, Lisa Schroeder, Bobbie Silvey, Nancy Ste- phenson, and Janet Williams. Only five juniors and one senior competed for the team. Emily Jones lead the team in to- tal individual scoring. A new school rec- ord was set by Kathy Pipes in the hur- dles. The remaining juniors were Teresa Ball, Cindy Gronstedt, and Sara Purvis. Reba Comstock held the top thrower position in the shot and discus all of her four seasons as a member of the track team. These girls are to be commended for their efforts in this sport because of the kind of individual drive and motivation this particular sport demands. Angie’s completed softball throw. 153 Kevin Washburn and Bret Bauer at Roiling Hills Country Club. Chris Hunter displays a backswing. They established the best record of any team in the 5 years 1 have been here. They finished a very impressive 5 th out of 23 schools at district and won the Tri-County Conference Championship for the second year in a row. Indeed, it was a VERY GOOD year for the Tiger golfers. With less than a minute of play remaining, Kent fouled out of the game. For Kent, the game, the season, and his high school basketball career ended abruptly. He finished with a career total of 1,180 points and 267 fouls. Like basketball, in LIFE you will make some points and commit some fouls. As in basketball, there is always someone or something there to keep you from your points. Sometimes they’ll beat you. When one basketball game is over, we must pick up the pieces, forget our mistakes, and prepare for the next one; so in life, when one goal is reached, or lost, we must prepare for the next. The game of basketball has many cycles-some exciting and thrilling, some disappointing. Life’s cycles, also, are many-some exciting and thrill- ing, some disappointing. Life is like a basketball—its direction and purpose depends upon who’s in control. As all things must end, so must this school year (this cycle). All that is left now are memories. Life will go on, the points will mount up; but some- where along the way, we’ll commit one foul too many. 176 Ws ■________r_.- J j • S % ' -s.
