There were games and dances; voices were hoarse from pep club and singing. There were brief mo- ments of glory for some of us in sports, musical, dramatic, and intellectual productions. All shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines, the semester grades, the noontime cafeteria rush. Th few that were packed into this full year. Credit for the production of this book goes to staff, however, has furnished only the outlines of we turn the pages filled with warm smiles of friendship and many happy recol- lections. The rest is up to the individual. Underclassmen who return to VHS in the fall will continue to keep up the high standards of the school, and strive for improvement. Graduates will go their separate ways using the knowledge they have gained here to reach their successes. It is not today that you will appreciate “The Mirror”. Tomorrow when it is hot so easy to think back on 1974, we will treasure the memories this book has stored for us. Remember when we sat in the balcony for assemblies, learned the school song for Mr. Barnard, wrote one-thousand-word themes for Mr. Snow, and discovered the dangers of the shower room, flying eggs, and water balloons? Those were the days when you could explain your way out of almost any predicament by simply saying, I'm a Freshman. We elected Doug Anderson as our class president and began putting our representatives into all aspects of school life. Thanks to some of our braver classmates, we even got into the tank competition and the big spray-painted letters SR '74' appeared on the tank one morning for everyone to see. Our first Football Homecoming was filled with fun and excitement and perhaps a bit of hard work. Our float, entitled Brand the Pintos won second prize and we marched proudly along side it and Debbie Compton, our Queen Candidate, in the parade. Patti Eppright represen- ted us at Basketball Homecoming, Vickie Silvey was our Mirror Queen candidate, and Mary Williams was our FFA Sweetheart candidate. Summer vacation passed and we were back together for our Sophomore year. We elected Morris Hall class president and chose Mary Johnson as our representative to the Sophomore Pilgrimage. Football season was especially memor- able that year for two reasons. The football team became Tri-County Co-Champs, and we elected our candidate, Julie Watson, as Football Homecoming Queen. No one can forget our float that year, 'De-Feet the Cardinals,' complete with guillotine and bloody feet which won second place again. We went on to win two more titles that year. Mary Johnson was Basketball Homecoming Princess and Susan Hickey was elected FFA Sweetheart. Debbie Bridges was our Mirror Queen candidate. Our Junior year was filled with preparations for the prom. Through money-raising projects, time, hard work, and the direction of Tom Walsh, class president, we entertained the Seniors with a sensational prom. Wind chimes, gay- colored flowers, trees, hanging parasols, a bridge, and fortune cookies brought our theme of Oriental Gardens out. Shelley Lyle was our Football Queen Candidate that year. Our float, Stomp 'Em , won second prize, for the third time. We were victorious in.elections.twice that year. Mary Williams was Basketball Homecoming Ptincess and Patti Eppright was crowned FFA Sweetheart. Lora Hardin was our Mirror Queen Candidate. Finally, we became 'mighty' Seniors and cameras began flashing pictures all about to capture the last memories of our high school days. Grace Smith was our Football Queen Candidate and our float, Victory Or Bust won second place, of course, to complete the tradition. It was a very good Basketball season and we are very proud of our boys' fine won-lost record of 19-7 and the second place trophy in the Regional Tournament. Laurie Hollingsworth was elected Basketball Homecoming Queen and Joellyn Eppenauer and Cindy Stubblefiel were also candidates. Vickie Silvey was FFA Sweetheart Candidate. We showed our Senior power in the final election and Melissa West was crowned Mirror Queen. Trading cards and pictures, attending a prom especially for us, filling our memory books, a wild trip to Worlds of Fun, and talk of old times and the future--this was our Senior year; a very good year. They were all good years. We were proud of ourselves, proud of our achievements together and individually and our contributions to VHS. We won't be returning to the familiar halls, filled with familiar faces, but the friendships and memories will be in the hearts because we will remember, The Way We Were . 74 GRACE SMITH, Historian FRANCO GUARIGLIA MISS GRACE SMITH MOST POPULAR GIRL AND MOST POPULAR BOY F.H.A.
