ztco uzle In his strip, Schulz holds a mirror up to nature, and readers happily recognize themselves in it as they would in the mirror of a funhouse. Reflected in Snoopy and friends, we see the kind of person we want to be. To us, they symbolize decency and in- tegrity—the good things of life. Watching their various adventures— baseball games, Red Baron hunting— we can learn from them about life: The happiness. The miseries. The joys. The heartbreaks. As Temco-Vought, Inc. points out, in one of their trenchant messages to sportsmen, we can learn, if we want to learn, that winning is not the point--the ultimate objective of the game and of life. Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never being satisfied with what we have done is the point. Never letting up is the point. Never letting anyone down is the point. Snoopy may never catch the Red Baron or play on a winning baseball team, but it's not winning that counts. What counts is trying. •Life, Vol. 62, March 17, 1967, p. 74.
