Senior Student Council The Morgan County High School Senior Student Council is an officer and member of the Alabama Association of Student Council, a member of the Southern Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Student Councils. Three of the last four years our council has held a state office. We were on program at National Convention in June, 1969. The council is composed of three elected officers, four appointed officers, appointed honorary members and official members elected by their class at large on a ratio of 1-45. 77 Sports A cheerleader’s yell, the hard contact of football players, the umpire’s call of ... STRIKE, the endurance of track and wres- tling, all combine with the other sounds of the high school's sports world to make up the ath- letic program of THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES. As MCHS spectators and players go from game to game and community to com- munity they not only take the name of MCHS to many parts of the state, but they constant- ly display the great spirit and sense of fair play. Though the game may not always be won - self discipline, sportsmanship and courage - points which we value in the game of life have been gained through participation in the interscholastic sports program. 79 MCHS Tiger The Mighty Tigers had the spirit to play well and the stamina to play hard. The combination set them firmly against their adversary, proving that the needed strength comes not only in numbers. By com- parison the school team is small, but the team showed eagerness, worked conscientiously, and gave their every effort to accomplish our 4-4-2 record. MANAGERS: Robert Long, Joe Taylor, Thomas Adcock. MCHS Honors Coach Cain Coach Cain in action. Sports are a unifying factor in any high school. At MCHS, the sports scene has instilled the student body with enthusiasm and genuine pride. We feel that it is now time to honor that person whose dedication to his boys has inspired countless victories. All those who have been coached by him have acquired high ideals of sportsmanship and the understanding of true victory - that it's not whether you win the game but how you play it. Coach Cain is blessed with a gift that can bring out all the fine points of any boy who wishes to play football. The student body and faculty of Morgan County High honor Coach Cain, not only for his superior effort in sports, but for the fine character he adds to our school. 83 MCHS COACHES: Jerry Atkins. J. T. Cain. Charles Penn Tigers Tie Muscle Shoals 7-7 Hartselle Tigers and Muscle Shoals battled to a 7-7 tie in the openinggameof the season. The scores came in the early minutes of the 1st quarter by Fullback Hampton. Dixon kicked extra point. The Trojons did not score until the final quarter when Halfback Parks dashed over from the 2 yard line. JIM HAMPTON Sr. FB ROGER HYDE DAVID MOORE Sr. C. All Morgan County MIKE THOMPSON Sr. QB Tigers Breeze by Leighton The Tigers started the contest off in fine winning fashion, as Fullback Joe Crow fell on a Leighton fumble in the Leighton endzone. The Tigers got their first TD in the first quarter, Ihe Tigers’ second TD came oh a 30 yard scamper by Halfback South down the left side of the field. Dixon again added the extra point. Hartselle had all the good breaks in the contest and you would have never believed it was Friday the 13th, by the way the Tigers played the game, seeming to get the lucky breaks when most needed, Leighton came close to scoring on one occasion in the fading minutes of the second quarter, but Thompson foiled the attempt by picking off apass in the endzone. Athens Downs Tigers Hartselle's Tigers were handed their first loss of the season at the hands of the Athens Golden Eagles to a tune of 20-7. It was a hard fought contest all the way. The half- time score was 7-7, but in the second half the Eagles broke it open, scoring two touch- downs in the fourth quarter to take the victory. JIM PICKENS Sr. G ED LOGAN Sr. E FREDDY HEMBREE Sr. HB DEWAYNE McABEE Sr. T 8b Raiders Roll Past Tigers Decatur Red Raiders rolled past Hartselle to a 21-0 final which made the Tigers 2-2. The game was pretty much a nip and tuck situation, until the last 12 seconds of the second quarter when Decatur scored their first touchdown to take a 7-0. Decatur came back into the second half full of pep and steam to make the final score 21-0. 87 Austin Trounced Tigers Austin's Black Bears trounced the Tigers to a 21-0 game. Hartselle couldn't keep a good thing going when they had the ball. Tigers Roll Over Bulldogs Hartselle's Tigers rolled to a 19-0 victory over the Hanceville Bulldogs at Hanceville, scoring three touchdowns within five minutes and five seconds in the third quarter. Area 15 Basketball Tournament beating Lakeside 59-57, then went on and almost beat Austin in a nip and tuck game all the way to the buzzer. The Tigers also brought home another trophy - by beating Cullman 73-38 in the TVC Tournament. All of the members of the basketball team shared the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Dewain Keel was chosen to the All Morgan County Team, and he won the trophy for the Most Outstanding Rebounder and Player. Jim Hampton won Best Defensive Player. We would like to thank Coach Jackie Coulter for doing a fabulous job in coaching these boys, and Coach Jerry Atkins for his assistance. 96 MCHS Honors Two Coaches MCHS is losing two fine basketball coaches. Coach Jackie Coulter has shown leadership and guidance for the past five years at MCHS. During his five years at MCHS his 1967 Junior Team won the Morgan County Junior Championship and his 1968 Senior team won the Morgan County Senior Championship. His Senior team was the Region 8 runner-up in both 1967 and 1968. and in 1969 his Senior team won Region 8 Championship. In 1965, 66, and 67 the Senior Tigers won the Hartselle Invitational Tournament. During his seven years of coaching he has won 113 games and lost 67. Jackie Coulter Jerry Atkins Coach Jerry Atkins has shown a tremendous amount of school spirit for his old alma mater. In the past five years he has assisted in coaching football, basketball, and baseball. He also has been head baseball coach for the past four years. Up until this year Coach Atkins has taught Science 9 or more popularly known as Atkin's Theater. MCHS wishes both of these fine coaches all success in their new jobs. We will miss two great coaches and friends. ■ 99 Fourth quarter pressure mounts ... Tigers behind 2 points ... only seconds to go ... time out! ... Let's go mighty Tigers ... the ball's in play ... a pass un- der the basket ... shoot, shoot, ... It's GOOD! ... wait, foul ... the horn ... we lost! 100 GLENN THOMPSON DOUG WEINMAN LARRY ROLLINS 101 102 103 Wrestling The wrestling team once again came up with a winning record of which MCHS can be proud and also a bevy of outstanding individual performers. In the schedule of matches the matmen won over Coffee, Sheffield, Huntsville, and Walker County. They lost to only two teams, Butler and Walter County, and tied with Sheffield. In the Coffee Invitational Tournament MCHS placed third. The wrestling team brought back individual honors from the State Tournament in Birming- ham. Steve Harris placed third, Billy McAbee. Jimmy Moore, Larry Sharpe and Roger Foster placed fourth. With Joe Sparkman as coach and with many of this year's wrestlers returning next year, it looks like MCHS will continue to be a strong competitor. Play Ball! 106 MCHS Baseball Having three players on the All Morgan County Baseball team, Joe Crow, Charles Chaney, and Butch Blankenship, the MCHS baseball team ended the season with a 7-10 record. Under the leadership of Coach Atkins, the team showed excellent spirit when they beat Huntsville High in a nip and tuck game. In the past five years of coaching the baseball team, Coach Atking has done an excellent job. He has had good sessions and bad. MCHS would like to say thanks for a job well done. 107 108 Track Team TRACK MEMBERS: Larry Smith, Bill Stanford, Tommy Hadley, David Roberts, Tony Couey, Levon Hall. Tom- my Williams, Mike Proctor, Steve Breeding, Curtis Martin, Johnny Dobbins, Mike Howel, Richard Whorley, Tommy Riggs, Spencer Sulling, Roger Foster, Jimmy Nix, Ronny Johnson, Lee Weinman, Brad Mitchell. Byron Ferguson, and Glenn Byrd, Mgr,, Coach Reynolds, 110 The Track Team at MCHS had a successful session even though they only participated in four track events. Led by Coach Reynolds, they brought back first place in the track meet at Hanceville, twice they won second in he tri-county events and they lost once. With only one senior leaving the team, next year should be a promis- ing one for them. Ill Field Events Runners 112 113 Varsity Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders are more symbolic of the spirit at MCHS than any other one group. During the summer months they spent hours practicing for their trip to Florence State to the ACA Academy, where they tied with Lee for first place. They decorated goal posts, made posters and banners, planned pep rallies and deco- rated the gym for pep rallies. MCHS says “thanks” to all these girls for a job well done in THE YEAR OF THE UVELY ONES. 114 115 Junior Cheerleaders Training to become a Junior Cheerleader includes a summer of steady practice, hard work, and a lot of aching muscles. Through THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES MCHS Junior Cheerleaders have promoted school spirit at all the Junior and B-team games. JENNY THOMPSON Head 116 Track Field Basketball Bowling Golf 120 Faculty Few things are reserved for the faculty besides work. These busy beavers behind our school actively plan each day. They contribute so much to our school life: teaching what we must know, developing better citizens, sponsoring clubs and other activities, chaperoning dances, conversing freely with proud or irate parents and freely giving of their precious time to help those in trouble or in need. Correcting, criticizing, listening, helping, sharing endlessly without adequate recognition, these all-im- portant people are the true leaders of our school. It is these men and women to whom we looked for inspiration and from whom we found it in THE YEAR OF THE UVELY ONES. 121 122 Mr. Milton Reed Principal Morgan County High School To our principal, Mr. Reed, we say a special thank you for your interest in us stu- dents. We feel that this personal concern has been an individual, as well as a student body interest. Many, many of usyouknowby name, and this knowledge has come in two short years. We think your participation in our school activi- ties made the Tiger Spirit even better. We are grateful for your understanding of us teen-agers, and sincerely hope the years here have meant as much to you as they have to us. Thank you. 123 MRS. Yearning to make themselves a true part of our high school scene, they came full of anticipation, excite- ment, anxiety, and independence. They struggled through the halls with stacks of be- loved books. They learned to cope with indifferent lockers, and hurried to class as the tardy bell gave its warning. They exhibited the great TIGER spirit by win- ning the spirit jug contest. All this and much more - their personalities seeped into MCHS and created a mixture of the good, the fun-loving, the eager, and the studious. 134 135 Ronny Adcock Becky Ball Valerie Blanton Marla Brown Jackie Anders Judith Bennet Anita Blevins Tommy Brown Ronnie Andrews Billy Betterton Sandra Blevins Kraig Burch Van Keith Bailey Tony Blackwood Debbie Bolan Glenn Burgess Dennis Bain Mike Blankenship Danny Brown Becky Byrd 136 Laura Campbell Roger Chapman Deborah Clark Kenneth Cooper Nancy Callaway Carol Camp Patricia Chasteen Fredia Clemons Spencer Clemons You've got to be kidding! Eighth Eager to renew old friendships, but not so eager to resume classes, the Eighth Grade students returned from the “shortest summer ever to begin the’69 school year. Their arrival proved to be less confusing than the year before, and as the year began to progress things went smoothly. The days flew by. and with them many ex- periences. As THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES came to a close, the eighth graders looked ahead to the fu- ture years, but memories of the past were not pushed aside. 151 Class of 1973 Cherie Adams Sam Ashworth Ernest Aldridge Randy Ausbon Diane Allen Carol Bagley Kathy Anders Herbert Bartlett Wayne Ashely Johnny Burnett David Bean Edward Boone Joan Bean Vincent Bertucci Diane Bomar Mary Boyer Jim Broom Mike Broom Deborah Brown Lisa Burnum Paul Callaway Marquita Chapman Jeanette Brown Scotty Byrd Sara Camphell Trippy Coon Keith Burch Loyd Byrum Roger Cannon Steve Cheatham Brenda Burgess Gina Cain David Carpenter William Childers Deborah Burns Paul Cain Larry Chaney Judy Cobb 154 Linda Cooke William Cole June Cook Kenny Crow Peggy Crow Randall Crow Gary Darwin Chadwick Day Tommy del Rio David Denton Jean Doss John Draper Mike Durden Brent Eaton Deborah Eddleman Linda Evans Sharon Griffith Robert Fedusenka Les Fowler Murrell Frazier Steve Green Susan Fulmer Marsha Gann Kenneth Garner Toni Griffith Greg Garner Debbie Giles Rebecca Glenn 156 Peggy Hacker John Halbrooks Dennis Halbrooks Mary Lou Hall Nancy Hall Rhonda Hall Ronald Hammon Tersa Hampton Nancy Hanes Brenda Hanners Betty Hargroves Steve Harris Lynn Harvel Gene Herring Loyd Higdon 157 John Hines Jerry Hopper Janet Jackson Jeff Joges Lonnie Hogeland Marvin Hopper Tersa James Kathi Kelley Gavin Hogue Michelle Huston Bobby Jenkins Kathy Kent Danny Holoway Joan Howard Larry Johnson Jimmy Kilpatrick Pamela Halloway Sally Hughes Michale Jones Archie King 158 Doris King Thomas Lanier Carol Long Linda McMurry Carol King Standley Letson Charlie Lang Michael Martin Darell Lackey Katrina Lindley Kathy Long Susan Martin Melinda Landers Jack Linan James Maples Ellen Maze Trixie Lane Donnie Livingston Connie Martin Ben McAboy 159 Ricky McAbee Terry McGhee Pamela Miller Clint Moore David McDonald Wayne McHan Michael Minor Richard Moore Bradley Mitchell Dean Morris Peggy Mitchell James Morgan Marcia Montgomery Randy Morton 160 Virginia Morgan David Newcomb Robert Peck Kathy Price Roger Morgan Lee Ann Norman Sherry Peebles Carol Prince Brenda Nelson Bonita Osborne Molissa Pitman Robert Puckett Millie Nethery Brenda Paker Larry Pollock Howard Qualls Robert Newman David Peck Allen Powers Marcia Reid 161 Ruth Reynolds David Roy Tony Self Steve Shelton Carolyn Riddle Kathy Ray Carol Shaddrity Dorri Sherrill Patti Roberts Randy Ryan Kenneth Sharpless Ricky Sims Robin Roper Mike Segars Frankie Sheats Jerry Slate David Rot ton Linda Self Detra Shelton Becky Smallwood 162 Bobby Smith Olamae Smith Vickie Spivey Allen Shelton Donald Smith Ronald Smith Karthleen Staudt Andy Stowe John Smith Susan Smith Carol Stephenson Marquita Thompson Kathy Smith Beverly Spain Charles Stringer Raymond Thomas Kenny Smith Charles Speegle Sandra Stringer Jack Thomas 163 Sherry Tabscott B. Their laughter bounced and echoed through the halls, and their undying spirit inspired others. For the first time they experienced the hard work that goes hand in hand with fun ... the anticipation and excitement of Jr. football and basketball games ... the joy in creating a Christ- mas float... the long hours of studying... and the heart- break of first love. This class played a tremendous role in making 1968-69 THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES. 166 167 The teacher is gone and they're still studying ... very interesting. When the year ended, most Sophomores look back with sadness on a wonderful year, a year long to be remembered. There are thoughts of the dances, and the weekend fun, and the float for the Christmas parade and thoughts of the school finished for another year. Their thoughts bring smiles, and remembrances of THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES. They were encouraged to support all school activities and formed a large section of our spirited cheering sections at all athletic events. On the move and advancing into the homestretch of learning, MCHS Juniors looked forward to the time when they would finally be Seniors. This was their last year of high school - an end and a beginning. Tasks and decisions that lay before them were chal- lenging. Choosing the college or career, selecting and sending invitations - these were a few problems which confronted the class of '69. Seniors assumed positions of leadership in school work and various organizations and worked hard to make their last year a profit- able one. Cards received and invitations sent out, students realized that graduation was near. As they marched down the aisle in cap and gown, a few tears were shed for this - the climax of their high school career and THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES. The 1969 MORCOHI Annual Staff has tried their very best to freeze those events forever through these pages. Many thanks go to those people who played a part in coordinating the annual; the students who worked on the annual staff - and some that just pitched in; the faculty who cooperated so readily and freely from class hours for pictures; the communityfor their dedicated support; Taylor Publishing Company and Waldrup Studio for their advice and help; Wendall Eubanks for supplying us with extra snapshots of sports activities and other shots; and last, but not least, the backbone of the Staff, Mrs. Sherry Burns, for everything and a little more” that she has done. We hope we have succeeded in our endeavor to present a new, modern annual to the students of MCHS. As you turn through the pages, we hope you will cherish and remember a long time the events portrayed in these pages. I would like to personally thank all the members of the annual staff for working so hard and diligently with me, and I wish them the best of luck on the 1970 MORCOHI. To the Senior Class, thanks for the best year of my high school days. May the students of MCHS have a happy and successful future. 280 Editor 1969 MORCOHI Work on the 1969 edition of the Morcohi began last June when six members of the staff spent a week at Samford University at the yearbook workshop. They brought back many new ideas plus a 3rd place trophy for the best preplanned annual. With the beginning of a new school year, the whole staff went to work taking pictures, writing copy, designing layouts, copyreading and typing. The staff sponsored a concert featuring Billy Joe Royal and The Martinques which was very successful. An enormous amount of time and work went into the publication of this volume of the Morcohi to accurately picture THE YEAR OF THE LIVELY ONES. 281 Staff Members EDITOR Judy Morton BUSINESS MANAGER Susan Carpenter STUDENT LIFE Marion Cash Marne Lindley Jennie Bennett ORGANIZATIONS Charlotte Thompson Debbie Thompson Cindy Caudill SPORTS John Pat Orr Jerry Sharrott FACULTY Lee Weinman Jim Roberts Martha Hogan CLASSES Annie Booth Kay Wallace Linda Plemmons Sandra Willingham Patsy Kirby Marilyn Roberts Kenny Spain Deborah Johnson Edward Carpenter Glenn Thrasher Mary Ward Patti Sherrill 283 h wed Doors. and junior.
