Individual claims were soon sold to larger companies - the Arizona Copper Company, Detroit Copper Company and Shannon Copper Company, who developed the plans which resulted in large scale copper mining. By 1921 Phelps Dodge Cor- poration had bought all the copper holdings in the Clifton-Metcalf- Morenci district. In 1941 the operations were changed from underground to open pit mining. Phelps Dodge today operates the huge open pit, the mill and the smelter. Twenty - six hundred employees maintain and operate the machines which have dug terraces fifty feet apart and one hundred feet deep in one square mile of hard rock mountain. Copper has never been the only source of income for resi- dents of Greenlee County. Cotton and ranching have also been im- portant. Our cotton is of such superior quality that several eastern textile manufacturers buy direct from our farmers. There are now only about 10,000 cattle, although about 1918 there were many thousands more. Against this colorful background we also find the manyindependent businesses--well developed and prosperous. Only the old-timers can actually realize the vast changes and progress we have made. We, the present generation, can only listen entranced to their tales of yesterday. GREENLEE COUNTY, WE SALU YOU! 1959 TE 'E' ,J 6 J.. g.-' .f I 4, flaffrfxrz' .fqyu --4. , . ., r VJ!
