Four class- rooms were added in March, 1954, and the auditorium was finishedin October, 1955. Individual claims were soon sold to larger companies - the Arizona Copper Company, Detroit Copper Company and Shannon Copper Company, who developed the plans which resulted in large scale copper mining. By 1921 Phelps Dodge Cor- poration had bought all the copper holdings in the Clifton-Metcalf- Morenci district. In 1941 the operations were changed from underground to open pit mining. Phelps Dodge today operates the huge open pit, the mill and the smelter. Twenty - six hundred employees maintain and operate the machines which have dug terraces fifty feet apart and one hundred feet deep in one square mile of hard rock mountain. Copper has never been the only source of income for resi- dents of Greenlee County. Cotton and ranching have also been im- portant. Our cotton is of such superior quality that several eastern textile manufacturers buy direct from our farmers. There are now only about 10,000 cattle, although about 1918 there were many thousands more. Against this colorful background we also find the manyindependent businesses--well developed and prosperous. Only the old-timers can actually realize the vast changes and progress we have made. We, the present generation, can only listen entranced to their tales of yesterday. GREENLEE COUNTY, WE SALU YOU! 1959 TE 'E' ,J 6 J.. g.-' .f I 4, flaffrfxrz' .fqyu --4. , . ., r VJ! The following year typing, stenography .and bookkeeping were offered ina summer school. Today most of these, as well as many other subjects, are in our curriculum. Night courses for adults were also important in the development of our community. Classes were open to those who wanted to learn English or Spanish. The study of mathematics was offered for men only. Then, as now, a three - member board of education had the responsibility for the educa- tional program. School administration was in the hands of the superintendent. For twenty- three years W. E. Lutz heldthis post, resigning Both elementary and high school classes were conducted inthe Longfellow School, shown at the right. It was constructed in 1902. In 1907 a second story was added to the brick structure. It had six rooms, an office, re- citation room and an apartment in the basement for thejanitor. Todayit is used for elementary classes. in 1939. Joseph H. Fairbanks, appointed at that time, still retains the position. He has been at the helm while our schools have expanded to in- clude seven buildings, ninety-eight faculty mem- bers and a total enrollment of nearly 2,500. Myrna Robison, who still lives in Morenci, was the only graduate of the 1906 class. The 1907- 08 term found seven pupils enrolled. Today almost six hundred students attend high school classes each year. Here and in the following pages we will in- troduce you to our school and to the people who make it what it is .......... X TF? FROM NOUNS TO Macbeth... ..Speech and English classes gave MHS students a better understanding of the fundamentals of our lan- guage and prepared them for their future lives in a more demanding society. Four years of English are required at Morenci. Tape recordings, phonograph records, short story writing, literature and grammar structure study enlightened the students. These classes offered help also in spelling and correc- tive reading and writing. Shown below are Bobby Perea and Ernest Camacho listening to a recording of MacBeth. The Girls' League is a senior high organiza- tion open to all girls in the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. It brings girls who are new to MHS into its activities, giving them fine opportunities to get acquainted with other girls. The League holds several annual social events such as the Girls' League formal, Girls' Party and Spanish dinner. Maria Carnacho, presidentg Margie Cam- acho, vice-presidentg Jeanette Andrews, secre- taryg Jackie Bancroft, treasurer, are the Girls' League officers. The year activities were started by an all girls' pot luck dinner. The girls brought food representing the various countries of the world. They wore appropriate costurnes. The theme for the annual Girls' League formal was Orchids in the Moonlight . Used to decorate the gymnasium were silhouettes of a city. In the center of the floor was a wishing well. In February the Spanish dinner was held in the home economics roorn with the girls pre- paring and serving the food. The thirty girls who earned the highest points by selling Christmas cards, cokes and tickets for the Spanish dinner went on the trip at the end of the year. v 'V' ,Q F2 Q L wx - A if 'ar' ALOHA .... Norma Mitchell, Ella Mae Sisco and Irene Marin were selected to attend the session at the Universityof Arizona. The imaginary states gave delegates an opportunity to set up and operate their own governments. They coped with the typical pro- blems of local, county and state governments for the seven-day program. Politics played a major role in their conventions. The juniors relied on these officers and sponsors, Mr. Darrell Evans, Mr. Loren Wilson, Miss Joy Rogers and Mrs. Helen Arnold, to help solve their problems and keep them working together toward a more profitable year. Their first year as upperclassmen brought the long- awaited pleasure of choosing class rings. Almost every member of the class of '60 proudly displayed one of these rings. In the spring the class played host to the seniors at the Junior Prom, the gala. event of the year. Also presented was the annual junior play, which yielded funds for class activities. The year's end and graduation ceremonies left each junior with the thrilling thought, Next year I'll be wearing that cap and gown! David Jackson, one of the main Characters of the junior play, puts up a poster advertising the event.
