FROM THFN- Each year, through the course of the lifetime of our building, from its erection in 1919 to its replacement next year by the new high school building, incoming freshmen have entered upon their high school careers, and graduating seniors have completed their four years of high school life and have gone to make places for themselves in the world. These walls have witnessed all the numerous activities embarked upon by these students; their laughter, their tears, their dancing, their study, their successes and their failures, their friendships and their courtships. All the fun and all the hard work that go into a high school career. Our high school building as it appeared while under construction thirty years ago. The picture was taken in January 1919. ACTIVITIES SPORTS DEPARTMENTAL ADVERTISERS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES We dedicate our 1948-49 Copper Catto Louise Park, as a token of our gratitude to a competent, untiring, unselfish worker for whom we have the utmost respect. She has served as the sponsor of our Honor Society for the past five years and has been the fi- nancial advisor of our annual since the first issue in 1944. We especially appreciate her patient and understanding guidance in our activities. L. L. MCDANIEL President OUR BOARD OF Behind the scenes of our school, spending much time on finances and policies and ever willing to support our activities, is our Board of Education. SHAVER Clerk 5 001 SOPEOIIIIEIIDEIII The responsibility for keeping all departments of our school system organ- ized and moving towards their respective goals rests on the able shoulders of our superintendent, Joseph H. Glenn Simons was elected president, Neils Larson vice-president, Mada Pharis, secretary and Beverly Williams, treasurer. The activities of the year began with a picnic at Eagle Creek. The second big event in which the seniors participated was, “Lost Horizon,” the Junior Senior Play. The high points of the year were Ditch Day and the Junior-Senior Banquet. Despite vowing for four years that they would be happy to graduate, the seniors found on the eve of graduation that reluctance to leave was mingled with their antici- pated joy. JUNIOR-SENIOR PLAY Lost Horizon, the 1948 Junior-Senior Play, under the capable direction of Miss Maxine Hagan was met with great acclaim. The setting of the Lost Horizon was located in Tibet. The story centered around the four evacuees from a Chinese uprising, whose plane crashed in the Himalyas. The pilot, a mongol, was killed, but the passengers were just shaken up. They expected to freeze but were picked up by an expedition from a near by lamasary. The story then shifts to the struggle of the four to get away from the lamasary where they suspect they are being held against their will. The carrying through of the lives of the four during their stay increases the charm of the story. The play was given power by oriental scenery and a well executed storm scene. The parts were all handled extremely well by: Conway..............Harrison Faribanks a Helen Briac............Elizabeth Moore Chang.................George Karakey High Lama . George Karakey (duel role) Mallinson ........William Glenn Miss Brinklow.....................Leah Klein Barnard..................Howard Cooper Myra.............................Bobbe Newton Elizabeth Tashi Lo Tsen Tibetian Wyland . BASKETBALL The Morenci Wildcats started the 1948-49 basketball season with a vengeance, defeating Ft. Thomas and Safford in the first two games, and it looked as if they would have a winning season; but after their first two wins they were unable to outscore any of their opponents. Although the Cats lost the majority of their games, many of them were hotly contested with Morenci losing by only a few points. One of the closest contests was the Clifton game in which they led the Trojans for 3 quarters but lost in the last quarter, 36-45.
