Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. walked the paths of Morehouse Coiiege some 40 years ago. Dr. . King had a dream. A dream that at! men someday wouid be equal. it was a dream whose reality Martin had experienced during his years at Morehouse College. Morehouse is where Martin learned to dream. In this environment of openness. love. opportunity and very high expectations. Dr. King fearned to stretch his inteiiectuai capabilities and form his dream into a plan. Morehouse is a cottage that produces great schoiars. professionals and leaders. Here is where Martin developed the character that would lead him to iead others. Morehouse is proud of her great visionaries like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Morehouse helped Martin find a future that was beyond his wildest dreams. Over the fast coupie of years, Graves Half has slowly start- ed to show ifs age. Over the sum- mer, major renovations have been made to return the hall to its former Hveabiiity. These renovations, made both inside and out, include a new study lounge, carpeting, and im- proved bathroom facilities. Though the freshman cfass hasn't been around long enough to appreciate the changes, they are in- deed drastic. Over the past four years, the colonies of bugs and mice have been the most infamous resi- dents of the dorm. Fortunately, this is no longer the case. 100 Years of Gro ves Hoff This year, Graves Hall is 100 years, and still standing tall. One of the most recognized tandmarks on our campus is, of course, Graves Hat! and this year we celebrate it's 100th year of exis- tence. Although it now serves as a freshman dormitory, originally Graves was foccuf point of the college. Within ifs hails, at one point, all activities took place. The hall served as dormitory, cafeteria, class room, and presi- denfs fodging. Part of the Mystique of Morehouse Co!- !ege comes from the rich history that sur- rounds us. Graves Halt greatly contributes to this aura. Many people are fascinated when realizing that they may share a room once used by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Ben- jamin E. The process of teaching the incoming freshmen the history of this great institution as weii as the traditions that make this a special piace to team and iiue 0!! take piace in the annuai freshmen week program. During this week. freshmen are encouraged to get to know the unique people and speciai features of the college in order to feet more comfortabie with the surroundings that will be home for the next four or more years. This year, Freshman week was a iittie more chaotic than usuai. This can be attributed to the fact that this was the iargest freshman class in the history of the coiiege with more than 900 new students. In oddirion to the veterans. Coach McAfee feh his five incoming freshmen wDuJ'd give Morehouse more depth than in any other time in recent memory. This depth would constature speed. quickness and great leaping ability. 1988-89 With the feadership of Captain Damon Dixon and Co-Caplain James Walker. Ihe freshmen and the veterans meshed rather quchy as the maroon tigers exploded to a pas: Christmas break mark of 8-1. The fasl start was attributed to an opportunistic defense which created opportunities for an expfosr've offensa capable of running off 8-10 spurts at any time during a game.
