DR. LEROY KEITH, JR. ,4 MM Dr. Leroy Keith. J11. the eighth president of Morehouse College. has been a major contributor to higher education for more than 20 years. He brings to the Morehouse presidents; a strong commitment to educating black men in preparation for leadership roles in society. Born February 14. 1939. the same month and day that Morehouse opened in Atlanta. President Keith is a native of Chattanooga. Tennessee. He was educated in the public schools of that city and entered Morehouse College in 1957. Here. he developed the leader- ship and organizational skills which were to bring him success in diverse educational and community activities. A Dean's List student. President Keith graduated from Morehouse in 1961 and continued his education at lndiana University. where he received a Master of Science degree and later a doctorate degree. President Keithis contributions to higher education have been remarkable and immense He has served as Assistant Professor of Education and Urban Studies and Director of the William Jewett Tucker Foundation Internship Program at Dartmouth College ll970w7D, Associate Dean of Dartmouth College 0971-73, where he served on 15 standing and ad hoc committees. including the Executive Come mitttee of the Faculty. and as Associate Vice President for University Policy at the University of Massachusetts. Central Office t1973-75'l. In the latter position. he advised the President of the University on relations between the University and other segments of public higher education. the executive department of the state government. and the federal government. In 1975. then 36 years oldi President Keith was appointed Chancellor of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, the first black to hold such a position in American higher education. In this capacity he had responsibility for planning and coordination of the 30 public colleges and universities throughout the state of Massachusetts. During his tenure as Chancellor. President Keith was also responsible for charter supervision for over 60 private colleges. By virture of this position he served on the State Board Of Educa- tion. the State College Board of Trustees. and the State Community College Board of Trustees. While serving as Executive Vice President of the Universityr of the District of Columbia 0978-83. President Keith had full ad- ministrative and managerial responSihility for on-going programs and supervision of all other vice presidents at the University. He also chaired the Budget and Finance Committee. the University Computer Resources Committee. the University Planning Committee. and the Administrative Council. Prior to assuming the presidency of Morehouse College. President Keith was Vice President for Policyr and Planning at the Univer- sity of Maryland where he was responsible for coordinating the development of long-range academia fiscal. and facilities planning for the hve-campus system. which has an enrollment of 90,000 students and an operating budget of more than 800 million dollars. A lecturer ofwide acclaim. a writers an educators and a lay leader in the Episcopal church President Keith has received numerous awards and citations. These include a Resolution of Outstanding Achievement from the State of Tennessee House of Representatives, the Indiana University Distinguished Alumni Service Award. an award for Exemplary Service in Education from the Black Educators Alliance of Massachusetts. InC.. and the Trustees Merit Performance Award from the University of the District of Columbia. He was one of three national educators selected to review the ehancellorship of City University of New York. the second largest system in the country. Additionally. President Keith was nominated and interviewed by the White House for a seat on the Tennessee Valley Authority Board. He was also selected by Change Magazine and the American Council on Education as one of 100 Top Young Leaders in the American Academy. and he is listed in Who's Who in the East. He is a member of 100 Black Men of Atlanta. the Rotary Club of Atlanta. the Commerce Club. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Inc. Both President and Mrs. Keith served as a host family for A Better Chance t'ABCl Program, of which President Keith was a board member, In national education circles. President Keith is highly regarded for his excellent leadership and administrative skills. In 1984. he was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to the Maryland Higher Education Supplement Loan Authority. More recently. he was appointed to the College Trends Committee and the Commission on Leadership of the American Council on Education. He also serves on two private sector boards; the Keystone Group, an investment company. and the Mutual Funds Board of the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company. President Keith attributes much of his success to his mentor. the late Dr. Benjamin B. Mays. who was president of Morehouse College when he was 3 Students Remembering Dr. Mays as a man of great vision who knew what he wanted the College to become.' President Keith would like to think of himselfas a person who also has insight into great possibilities for the growth and development of the schools and he feels that he has the determination to embark upon new vistas to accomplish this end. He would like to see Morehouse under his leadership continue the strong. tradition of providing Atlanta. the nation. and the world with the kind of black male leadership that is needed in society today. President Keith has already served as a mentor for numerous scholars who have become leaders in the law. medical, business. and teaching professions. President Keith is married to the former Anita Halsey of Chattanooga. Tennessee They have four daughters: Lorii a graduate of Dartmouth College and a fourth-year medical student at the University of Michigan: Susan. 21 graduate of the University of Maryland. who is employed by the U.S. Public Health Services; Kelli. a freshman at Dartmouth College: and Kimberly, who is a fourth grader.
