Wilherspoon Teaneck, NJ. Michael L. Wilson Fort Waynm Ind. ADMINSTRATION President Hugh M. Gloster 1-16 Pres's Letter MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1975 You are graduating from college during one of the most difficult periods in human history. On the international scene two great powers. now capable of destroying each other, are continously adding to their nuclear stockpiles. At the same time several smaller nations are engaged in bitter hostilities. and racial and religious differences are dividing men in many lands. Millions of people are starving in India. Africa and Latin America. In our own country we are polluting the air. making it unfit to breathe; and we are polluting the water, making it unfit to drink. Moreover, we are damaging our landscapes and wasting our resources. The Watergate scan- dal has revealed men in the highest office of our country offering bribes, committing fraud, and obstructing justice. Worst of all. the home, the church, and the school are losing their influence over thousands of young people who are seeking worldly pleasures, experimenting with drugs. and participating in crime. You are leaving Morehouse at a time not only when physical decay and moral deterioration are weakening our country but also when inflation and recession are undermining our economy. Prices are rising and unemployment is increasing: and once again we see abundant proof of the old adage that blacks are the first to be fired and the last to be hired. As you prepare for your careers, I wish I could say that you will face no racial discrimination in the job mar- ket or in graduate and professional schools; but the fact is that prejudice still prevails in many areas of em- ployment and education. Since bias is still with us. you must do everything in your power to become the best possible graduate students. the best possible professional men. and the best possible citizens in order that you may achieve your full potential as a human being. Although there is a serious malise in our society as well as continuing discrimination in employment and education. this is still Commencement-Day. a time of beginning for each member of the graduating class. Starting now. this is the first day of your lives; and you will have to determine what future education you will need in order to prepare yourselves for the best possible professional performance and what part you are going to play in helping to solve the problems that beset mankind. As you leave this institution we wish you the best both as professional men and as constructive citizens. We also ask you to remember that when you succeed Morehouse triumphs and that when you fail Morehouse goes down in defeat. Commencement Day -Hugh M.
