At that time he said the aims ofhis stewardship at Morehouse were h'. . . to maintain a strong faculty, to pay competitive salariesh to recruit talented students, to provide attractive scholarships, to develop creative programsh to raise sufficient endowment. to de- velop an adequate physical plant. and to gain the necessary support from alumni. foundations. cor- porations, and other friends of the College . You have successfully completed your undergraduate years at dear old Morehouse, and you are now ready to undertake further study in graduate and profes- sional schools or to move directly into your chosen occupations. The world that awaits you as professional men and as concerned citizens is a confused and troubled place. Abroad there are wars and rumors of wars . Persecution prevails in South Africa, an explosive situation exists in the Middle East, and armed clashed continue in Southeast Asia. In this country there are serious political. economic. and social problems. Wrongdoing has been traced to the White House. inflation is weak- ening the economy and prejudice is ruling the hearts of men. As you prepare to leave Morehouse, I cannot paint a rosy picture of the path ahead. Like all other college graduates, you will have to struggle for first-class education and employment; but. unlike nine tenths of your fellow American seniors. you will sometimes encounter special problems because you are black. As Morehouse men, you are expected to succeed in your profession despite the handicaps of color and also to improve the lot of poor and disadvantaged people in this country and elsewhere. You will achieve only half of your mission if you gain only personal success: you must also lend a helping hand to those who are crushed by poverty and prejudice. You will find that there are greater satisfactions in lifting others than in ixpoliting others. Wherever you go and whatever you do. remember that you are a symbol of Morehouse. If you succeed. Bogcr Chairman 39 Dr. Wagner was not a Morehouse man by graduation. but he was a Morehouse man by dedication- and in this respect he followed in a long line of outstanding non-alumni teachers including John Hope, Samuel H. Archer. Kemper Harreld, B.T. Harvey. Benjamin E. Mays. and G. Lewis Chandler. Although Dr. Wagner was not an alumnus of Morehouse. he loved this school with all his heart and soul. He was a great teacher who strengthen the weak and motivated the strong. He was an able researcher who not only conducted scholarly investigations himself but also guided students into such activities and collaborated with them in research projects. He was a concerned sponsor who directed students to higher levels of graduate and professional education. He Was a generous tronw tributor who showed by his regular financial assistance his commitment to the program of the school where he was employed. Dr. Wagner has erected an enduring monument for himself in the minds of his students and his colleagues: and with my feeble words and inmy limited time I cannot pay adequate tribute to his contributions as a teacher and as a scholar. Because of his good works here at Morehouse, however, all of us who had the good fortune to know him will miss him in the years ahead and will remem- ber him when we consider what a teacher and scholar should be. Perhaps the statement is true Sir, that there comes a time in every man's life when he sits down and reminisces on the years behind and with ouriostiy thinks on the years before him. In doing this sir, I am reminded of my initial year at Morehouse. There were many faults about this institution. some which I wanted to Change immediately. However. I caught myself before continuing to criticize the college and I came up with the following analysis. Number one, She tMorehouseJ never claimed that she was one-hundred per- cent free of faults. nor did she advocate that she had the magical potion to solve the nation's problems. On the other hand sir, I think she has told me through my matriculation here, that the faults you often criticize are the very stepping stones to your success.
