IN THE BEGINNING Morehouse CoIIege, in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, is an institution tor the education of men for constructive leadership and service. In Its beginning Morehouse COIIege was operated by the Ame'rcon Baptist Home Mission Society of New York. In I935, the controI was transferred to the Soard of Trustees. The CoIIege was organized in the year 1867 in Augusta, Geargtc under the name of HThe Augusta Institute. In l879 under the presidency of the Rev. Joseph T. Robert, LL.D., it was moved to Atlanta and named HATIGHTCI BoptIst Seminary. At this stage of its growth the institution owned onlyr one building, that being a compotetiver smalI threeistory structure Iocoted near what is now the Terminal Station. President Robert was succeeded by President Samuel Groves, D.D., in 1885. Dr. Graves served 05 preSIdent untiI 1890. In IBBQ, as the surroundings oI the Old Iocctton W Atlanta had become UnmvombIE, 0 new site was secured, and In the sprung 0t 1890 the schooI was moved to its present Iocotion. In the autumn of this year President George SoIe entered upon his duties. Amendments to the charter were secured and the name was changd to Atlanta Bap- tist CoIIege in the year 1897. In 1906 President Sole resigned and was succeeded by Professor John Hope. By a vote of the Board of Trustees in 1912, the name of the instttution become Morehouse College in honor of Dre Henry L. In 1931, President Hope resigned and was suc- ceeded by Dean Samuel Howard Archer. On Oct- ober l, 1938, President Archer reiired from The Presidency and become President Emeritus. From Detember, I937 fhrough June 30, 1940, Dr, Charles D. Huberl, Director of the School of Religion, served the College as Acting President.
