A group of teen-ageis enjoy an after game party DEDICATIQN To you, Mr. Voigt F. Morgan, we, the seniors of 1958, dedicate this yearls CARILLON. There are many reasons why we selected you for this honor. From the time as sophomores struggling through biology to the time as seniors ploughing through chemistry, students can be sure that you are out to learn them something! If the lesson to be taught is not biology or chemistry, it is the value of a college education, or the do's and don'ts of social conduct! You are famous for your tangy statements which have the power to enliven any class or club meeting. Over and above your classroom work, you are the advisor of the Science Club: take charge ol' the buses and bus driversg direct the senior play, head the science departmentg stage the Science Fairg back all athletic activities, help sponsor the Youth Family Life Council, and you are everybody's friend! But why go on forever? We all know you, Mr. Morgan, and our lives are better for having worked with you! ports. In his capacity as HdV1SO1 to the bus drivers, M1 Moiffan assists in filling out monthly ie Martha Stephens adjusts laboratory apparatus under the watchful eye of Mr, Mor- gan. Mr. Morgan and his colleagues map out plans for the 1958 Science Fair. Members of the senior play committee are assisted by their director in choosing a script. --ll.'- ADMINISTRATIGN Faculty members do far more than their reg- ularly scheduled classes. They chaperone our par- ties, sponsor our clubs, direct our plays, and do about a thousand and one other things for us -the students! For this constant service their material rewards are few, but they have psychic income aplenty. The tea put on by the Woman's Club is a ges- ture of friendliness to new teachers and a re- newed welcome for those returning for another year of service. The efforts of the members of our staff are obvious- ly appreciated by every- one. There are also on our staff those who do everything from cook- ing our lunches to man- aging the library. Mrs. ..12Q Banks, our School Sec- retary, is one of those persons who aid every- one - students and fac- ulty alike! Her indefa- tigable efforts get peo- ple located, reports made promptly, stencils cut, transcripts sent, and numerous other big and little problems solved. The perfection sought by our teachers, along with their helpful and interested attitude to- ward students, has prov- ed to be a profitable and an enjoyable com- bination. R. I. From the sophomore through the senior year, we are able to choose courses for col- lege preparatory work, business training, and development of vocation- al skills. We have an opportunity to taste everything from Euclid's geometrical hypothesis to Shakespeare's Sir John Falstaff. The thorough instruction given has prepared many students for successful futures. ln many of these classes we lose the distinction between sophomore, jun- ior, and seniorg members of all three groups work together as one. -18? In many other cases these three classes work independently. Each has its own meetings, pro- jects, and socialsg and generally, each has its own study interests. Outside of school, there is nothing like a ball game, or a party to erase all class barriers and bring the whole school together. Though we are separated in many of our activities, times like these make us realize that we are part of a great school and not just a class. Almost every student takes part in one or more of the clubs or- ganized in school. There are groups for students who excell scholastically or athletically, for stu- dents interested in a particular vocation, and for everyone in each class. Among the im- portant class activities is the junior magazine sale. This is a cam- paign of several weeks, climaxed for the ener- getic by prizes and cer- tificates. YGUR SUM EMIS YEAR? Wig 1755? ffqlsgi Y Public speaking is one of the most reward- ing activities. Though it takes lo ng hours of preparation, an actual debate is well worth the effort - as members of the team will willingly tell you! Several clubs sponsor events pictured else- wha 1581 where in the annual. Others have important positions in the school government and organi- zation. Members of one club do a little substitute teaching. The majority of the students enjoy these organizations, and there is a definite profit for those who enter ser- iously into the activi- ties. The worth of these clubs is becoming known to people in colleges and businesses every- where. It is to our ad- vantage to become active members of those that interest us. ,wb 1, 1 .. QV 14. .V'. Their early morning and late afternoon efforts get us to school and back home safely and usually on time! Those of us who pass by the office during the day are familiar with the faces of students who aid faculty members by running errands, answering the telephone, and thumbing through records. Whether hard at work at the file cabinets or at the mimeograph, their office position often makes the work of others easier and more enjoyable! Giving the librarian time to help other students is the task of these busy assistants. Stamping cards, preparing new books for the shelves, and straight- ening the library constitute only a few of their jobs. Always on hand, these three groups fill a great need in our school. -75- S, Allred, D, Wilson, F. Lewis, J. Garrett, G. Kirks, J. Stegall, B. Swin- dell, E. Massey, C. Price, J. Smith, A .Stultz, G. The cheerleaders prac- tice cheering for hours after school in order that their voices may be trained to inspire the fans and cheer the team on to victory. Those who work at the games selling tickets, passing out programs, or serving the mob at the concession stand hope, too, that their ef- forts will be well-1'e- warded by victory. The students who keep the record books and operate the clocks are always plied with ques- tions! Who was high scorer? Who made the extra point? Who struck out? They do their best to keep everyone in- formed with the latest statistics. nn... Q., Jn.. ., -73- Yi.. In athletics we have days that stand out as glory days - The day we won the champion- ship! The day we beat the really tough team! The day we pitched a no-hitter! In addition to these events, we have a mem- orable day each year called Homecoming Day. Homecoming is important to the foot- ball players, the stu- dents, and the faculty. On this day old familiar faces come back to old familiar places. Q lf' EA if FEATURES Certain events of the year merit special at- tention from us, as they are the result of exhaus- tive planning and work that involves nearly all students and faculty members. Our features include gala social events, informative meet- ings with college repre- sentatives, and discus- sions about careers with people actually engaged in the professions. Many of these events are sponsored by clubs. These require the con- centrated efforts of a small group of people. The long hours of prepa- ration are, however, re- garded with a feeling of accomplishment and sat- isfaction. College Day is an ex- ample of one of the club- ..9.1- sponsored activities. The F. T. A. members invite representatives from col- leges to talk personally with students interested in any of the represent- ed schools. The tapping of new members of the National Honor Society is another memorable occasion. All of our features, from the Junior-Senior to Homecoming are guar- anteefl success because we are bound and de- termined to enjoy what we do ourselves. Most of them are con- veniently located in var- ious sections of Leaks- ville, Draper, and Spray. These local businesses, in return for your pa- tronization, have pur- chased ads to help us cover the cost of this book. Many of our stu- dents work for the local firms. Our own school store carries some prod- ucts locally produced and distributed. Many of the firms are strong backers of our athletic teams and are truly interested in all attainments of students and faculty. We appre- ciate their loyal support. --106- In many cases the at- tractive stores, offices, and grounds of our ad- vertisers add to the attractiveness of our school community. On our booster page this year will be found the names of many of our leading citizens and professional men. They too, have expressed a desire to give us a boost in financing our annual. We can pay our debt to them with con- tinued achievements in our school activities. o . - , l T0 THE TGRADIUATES Y , I i V We Salute You and Share Your Pride On This Occasion May your future attainments be unlimited and may Graduation Day be a forward step in the fulfill- ment of your dreams.
