Surprising New Talent This year. as in previous years, we received a new batch of cheerleaders to support our sports events. These young ladies went through a long process of try outs and eliminations in the beginning of the year to get where they are today. They really earned their spot. After making the squad, the new rookies found out the thrills of trying to make the crowd of a football game cheer on their team. W ' The l985-86 Frosh Cheer: Xochilt Benadict, Kim Tuazon, Stella Ferreira. Zenny Agullana. Kristin Troiano, Melissa Granados. Tiffany Torquemada, and Sophia Tavares. The girls not only learned how to encourage partici- pation and spirit but also how to do it in sub-freezing weather. It turned out to be a lot of work and they did an excellent job. Coordinator, Sarah Simonian, says, l was so surprised to see how quickly these young ladies caught on. They were so organized as if they've done it before. Future Omega hamps? Hey, boys and girls . How do you feeI? . Well you had better feel good because we're out here doing our best to make sure that you do. We all have to give this year's Junior Varsity cheerleaders a big pat on the back for all of their hard work and dedication to our football and basketball teams. Let's admit it. our sports events wouldn't be the same without them cheering us along. If you thought that you recognized some of the squad members from last year it's because this years J.V. squad is the same squad from last years fresh- mans'. Cheerleading gives me a chance to meet other people and make new friends. It allows me to particpate in many of the schoo!l's activities in a very unique way . These are the feel- ings of veteran cheerleader Kristen Russo and probably for the rdst of the squad as well. The girls have a great time out there ever. Head tough doing what they do best. having fun. There were. how- Iong and tedious practices that took alot of patience. cheerleader Trish Boyle and the rest of the squad will be to beat in future Omega rallies. l985-86 J.V. This years varsity football team finished 7 wins and 3 losses. Their record doesn't really tell the true story of how well this team played. For the first time in the schools history, the Mariner Football Team was ranked in the state of California. ,The team defeated 3 North Coast Section Teams. San Leandro 35-7, Encinal 2l-IO. and Washington 2l-l4. On offense the Mariners were 3rd in the Easy Bay. The offense was led by the running of Braxton Banks, the passing of Craig Rowe, the receiving of Tim Slone, Glenn Baxley, Mike Rossi and Joe Farrish, and the out- standing line play of Dan Squires, Dave Pereria and Mike Wenzler. The unsung players of our fine offensive l. San Leandro, Encinal and Castlemont where nly allowed 30 total pts. The defense was led by Iinebacckers. Tim Slone, Eric Archuletta. Jim Redmond. and R ich Valle, with the help from backups Dave Lieboslitz and John Looney. The D-Line was anchored by Da the se Libby The Squires, George Famous and Jim Rosette while ondary was led by Glenn Baxley and Jrs. Steve nd Hayme Lake. e is no doubt in the mind of this team's coach that the i985 football team was definitely the Jill team in the North Coast Section. Good luck to all.
