The room seen is what is custom- arily described as a living room, but in this house the term is something of an un- derstatement. The every- man-for-himself room would be more like it. For here meals are eaten, plays are written, snakes collected, ballet steps practiced, xylophones played, printing presses oper- ated - if there were room enough there would probably be ice skating. The 'every-man-for-himself room also almost becomes the setting for the breakup for the omance of one of Mr. Vanderhof's grand- iaughters, because of severe differences be- ween the two families. By the end of the mlay, however, all involved have learned a 'aluable lesson: You can't take it with you.
