Practice began on August 13th with 50 participants and we finished the season with 47 players. Breakdown by class was as follows: SENIORS..........18 JUNIORS............9 SOPHOMORES. ..20 The varsity football team finished the regular season undefeated with 8 wins and 0 losses, 1984 Rum River Red Division Champions and finishing as runner-up in the Section 5A Play-Offs. The 1984 JV football team went through an unusual year this past season. Weather caused several schedule changes and re-scheduling problems resulted in our playing two new teams and cancelling three games. Due to very limited numbers of juniors available for JV action, this group was closer to a true sophomore team. At several times, they showed excellent potential, but due to their inexperience, they also had stretches where they had a good deal of problems. We had 20 sophomores and 4 juniors who saw action this year. Overall, a generally satisfying year, as the team showed good potential for the future, as several sophomores saw extensive special learn duty on the varsity level. 79 Seventh 'uuCc Aas. SctmtptfL'Uf Volleyball is continuing to prosper as a sport for girls in Mora. Almost 100 girls participated or served as managers this year. This number represents an increase of about 16 girls. The varsity team placed third in district competition and finished in a three-way tie for third place in the Rum River Conference. With three letterpersons reluming and a senior dominated team, they finished very strong. Mora had good strength and depth at the hitting positions. In order to utilize this, a 5-1 offense was introduced and used in the last half of the season. Individual and team goals were set at the beginning of the season and reviewed weekly. Accomplishments of the goals by the individuals and the team made this team a fun one to coach. The coaching staff continues to work well together. Their knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport are two reasons volleyball has done well. The basic fundamentals are stressed early, taught correctly, and built upon as the player advances. 83 photo c. The Lady Mustangs ended their season with an overall record of 11-9, which is very commendable considering the losses from last year's squad. Of the 9 losses, only 3 were by more than 6 points. This leads to one of the frustrating areas as we lost games by 6, 3, 3, 2, 2, and 1 points, and this proved very frustrating over the course of the season for both the players and the coaches. These close losses prevented us from having another exceptional season. The team ended up 8-5 in the Rum River, good for 5th place. This was, a major accomplishment for this team considering their talent level. Also, the losses were by 9,6, 3,2 and 2 points, which shows how competitive we were in the conference. Finally, this team was satisfying in how competitive they were but frustrating in how close they were to being outstanding. 89 'ZO re tiiay 7( 'le tfaty Scosiet DUAL MEET RECORD Mora 37 Pine City 22 Mora 34 Princeton 32 Mora 11 Chisago Lakes 46 Mora 26 Ogilvie 34 Mora 8 Foley 54 Mora 23 Sauk Rapids 30 Mora 26 Crosby-lronton 29 Mora 15 Braham 47 Mora 9 Milaca 42 Mora 18 North Branch 40 Mora 6 St. Francis 52 Mora 12 Cambridge 41 JV record: 5-7-0 photo b R Force. The competition became more intense after that and the highlights of the wrestling season were seen in tournament competition (2 champions at the Mora Invitational). Four wrestlers qualified for the Region Tournament. Two of these won 2 matches each, but did not qualify for the State Tournament. Three of the region qualifiers were underclassmen. The team was exposed to a variety of coaching personalities in contrast to previous seasons. Russ Koch, as assistant coach, and Stan Larkin, as a volunteer coach, provided most of the new coaching. I recommend that from a convenience and communications standpoint an assistant coach be named from the high school staff. 91 c-e s i Scares Gets Record: 2nd place 2nd place 3rd place 3rd place 2ndpiace 4th place Boys Record 4th place 3rd place 4th place 3rd place 2nd place 5th place Scares Conference 9-3 Games 14-6 Played Prnceton Cambridge Chisago Lakes St Francis Pine City Sauk Rapids a Goates gotta have guts' — Roc Hegemess b Wade Koch and Dave Epsen chalenge c. Hey you with the big ears, what are you doing alter the show? (Ernestma — Kathy Fore) Spring Musical, Hello Dolly, 1985 A tradition of excellence was carried on in this year's Spring Production, Hello Dol- ly.” A large, talented cast and chorus worked nearly eight weeks to prepare this en- joyabte and entertaining production for performance on March 28-30, 1985. They per- formed to nearly 2000 people. In Hello Dolly the character, Dolly, is the key figure and senior, Ang DeWitt, created a characterization that led the way for the rest of the company. Seniors Denise Evenson, Lisa Sunderman, Becky Nelson, Mike Saari and Donovan Hannu also, turned in fine performances. The talent, enthusiasm and pride was evident in all aspects of the show, both from the seniors and underclassmen. MHS can look back on “Hello Dolly as a highlight of all of its Spring Productions and can look forward to many more years of exciting musical shows. ‘Tftonei (meent Back P W ers. C Malostoski.
