Everyone on the team was able to get along and win together, without having three or four standouts. After losing twenty-one seniors the year before, nobody really thought we would do much, especially be ranked as one of the top teams in the state for seven weeks! “It was disappointing too, said Brain Smith, “The most disappointing was the Chicago Lakes game. We beat them on every statistic of the game except the final score. We totally outplayed them!” Despite this, he felt it was a “satisfiable season,” even though “we really had to work hard this season.” All three agreed that team spirit, school spirit, and excellent community involvement were con- tributing factors in making this the most ex- citing season in recent history. 7 What do I do now dad? By February first, Mora accomplished a ten and one record, This put them at second place in the Rum River Conference behind Chisago Lakes, and earned them the honor of being ranked in the top ten for the state in Class A boys basketball. After two weeks of conditioning Z’s and team of- fensives and defensives, the Mustangs opened against Aitkin. One of Scott Lacher's fondest memories was, “Beating Aitkin when they were ranked number two in the state.” As Dan Gustafson recalled, “We ended up beating them by one point.” Mora continued, beating Pine City, and Princeton before falling to conference favorite Chisago Lakes. After breaking for the holidays, the Mustangs reeled off seven straight victories. This included the regaining of the Goat in the annual Goat Game, and defeating North Branch who’s starting line-up stands at 6 9 , 6 7 , 6 5 , 6 3 , and 6’ 0 . The Princeton game could have been a heartbreaker, but the Mustangs rallied and came back after being behind by thirteen points. Most of the girls felt the highlight of the season was avenging last years losses and defeating Pine City twice. Some other very memorable moments were concerning “The fun and exciting talks a few of us would have on the rides coming home, as Melo Norgaard reflected. And Kris Pederson recalls “Mr. Gauffin’s dull jokes. is The Mora Mustangs' future in basketball lies in the talents of our junior high teams. This year's junior high groups show a lot of potential. 8th grade boys basketball Coach Antonson remarked that “a number of players have even worked hard in the off-season to improve their skills.” 8th grade girls basketball Coach Bierbrauer said that “im- provements can be seen by looking at the players' statistics.” The seventh grade teams had a few comments on what it was like to play up at the High School. Dean Gorton noted that he liked the High School program ... “a lot better. (Because) there’s not as many people.” And Robin Lick went on to add that he liked it also, because there was “more competition. The seventh grade girls had two teams this year — a red and a blue team. One girl’s player said that the coaching seemed a lot “tougher” but, she liked playing this year. No parade was to be had, because no one made a float, too bad! The Mustangs on the Indians were rough (14-0), and the juniors won the powder puff. Tom Dell 49 Fall Production Woody Alton was a bigger hit in Mora than I would have figured. “Don’t Drink the Water” had a good turnout (audience wise) conaidering the weather — below zero windchilla and snowstorms. Artistically, perhaps it’s the most successful show we have had here. The acting was very good overall, exceptional in some cases — Don H., Mary I., Chris 0., and Bonnie T. Included were Vicky, a teenage aspiring actress, played by Lisa Sunderman; Humphrey Hubert, a ner- vous hypochondriac, played by Bob Johnson; Mrs. Bland, a pro- per socialite played by Tammy Kaddatz; and Mr. Bland, a gentleman hunter, played by Tim Ogren. Humphrey arrives at the Bland's country house constantly be- moaning his ailments and bores Vicky into inventing a fantastic tale about Mr. Bland. That, in turn, scares him witless when Mr. Bland returns. “I’m her niece, Victoria. How charming to meet you. It becomes a combined effort by the students, music parents, and band directors. This year's “Land of Make Believe was a fun theme to work with. We decorated the auditorium using make believe characters from Sesame Street, cartoons, movies, games, and Walt Disney. Some of the memorable moments of this concert would be the opener when friends such as E.T., the Pink Panther, and Pac Man came out and danced. Working on the huge wall posters was like coloring in a huge coloring book. Thanks to the students, we came up with 30 of these to decorate the auditorium. The bands played well but it was especially rewarding for the concert band to play Chuck Mangione's “Land of Make Believe and do such a fine Job. Senior Tom Humphrey played flugel horn solo and did a great job. After weeks of work preparing an event such as this, it's almost a let down to have it over. Wade Schultz History of the Class of ’83 • Caught in the Crossfire of Childhood and Stardom W cam in thrashing in 1977. W stood outside the door of the new building, remembering our orienta- tion day, and hoped w wouldn’t become forever lost between classroom wall and beneath seniors’ feet. As seventh graders, w became a working, though not yet unified, class body. Still, everyone associated in group from the old 45-1S plan; group 1-4. W kept plenty of pencil in our locker and actually brought material to classl We changed our locker combina- tions rapeatedly a friend soon became enemies and hooka became stacked. One day we went on a gar- bage pick-up in which we gathered little aluminum, but acquired a pretty complete beer can collection. In eighth grade, many considered ua the rowdiest class in school (and some Hill do). We thought up original but not always plausible explanation lor why we missed that class and for why we had to throw that pencil. We finished reading class and wa no longer had to read book with catchy titles like “Kaleidoscope” and “Galaxies.” In ninth grade we had the demerit system and the few of ua who survived watched “Battleetar Galac- tic .” We took our SRA tests and wished we had more time. We realized soon we would be in high school. In tenth grade we lurked in the baaement and got our first us of orange and brown lockers. The classes got tougher and counted for more. W had class parties and dances and a fair number of lyceums and we started to cheer at pep feat . At laat we had driver’s ad., all of which was mostly forgotten three months after we acquired our little red licenses. In eleventh grad w realized w had but on year left. W also realized w had but on year to , decide the course of the rest of our lives and spent I a fair amount of time on the PSAT test and reading book in the counselors' office. W realized we were being given responsibility and with it, pressura ws had not previously known. So to offset it, we became the number on party class! Seniors finally, a little wiser and a little more mellow but still possessing our old energy which showed in our sports. We enfoyed being top of.th bill and watched the year fly by as if on fast for- ward. W took tentative steps into the adult world and found it wasn't all that harsh. We went forth thrashing, as w cam in. The unbeatable class of ’83. Tom Dell Growing Up and Remembering - 12 Years in Mora Schools. Todd Mot. IM WNklnoon. Wodo Schutti. What a drag! Hey! I got this total- ly awesome idea, man! Let’s skip out for an hour or two! Yeah, alright! (Why don’t you ever listen to your mom?) Well, I perceive by the current trend of political and sociological events and by certain economic and environmental fac- tors as illustrated in to- day’s communications, it’s going to be a lousy day! (Now why didn’t you listen to your mom?) Ah, yes! I remember it well! Yes, I remember ... I remember ... I remember ... yep, I remember ... I ... remember... God, I wish I could remember! The junior high student looked up at the six foot twelfth grader and asked, “How come you can walk around the halls like that?” The twelfth grader smiled with amusement and said, “Because I’m a senior!” So what is a Senior? A senior spends half of his her time remembering what’s on the next test and half forgetting last weekend. Seniors are a conservative crowd. They don't wear HIKES just because everyone else does. They don’t play Pac-Man, they don’t tell sickening jokes in class, and they don’t play chase in the halls. On the other hand, they do drive a little fast, and they have been known to party a bit, and they do get a tiny bit unruly at sporting events. Of all, the seniors are the easy-going class. They have plenty of credits and plenty of free time and plenty of decisions to make. Seniors find some school policies laughable when applied to them, and acquire a new understanding and respect for others. So when you see that kid lounging around upside down in the hall in the middle of the hour with a portable stereo on one side and a Coke on the other, leave him alone. He's a senior!
