OFFICERS: NORMAN JOHNSHOY ORVILLE AUSTIN BEN ANDERSON ROY HARRISVILLE MISS PEARL WILMER President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Adviser CLASS UF1El4li Originating in the studios of MHS Through the courtesy of station CHO-KIO, the historical saga of the class of i940 will be presented. Starting to make a name for Themselves in their sophomore year, they majored in forensics and continued to spread the fame of Moorhead High School through their senior year. The first year, Marlys Geraghty and Delores Possehl promised much in declamation while Nell Chinn and Dorothy Deems began debating. Marlystook honors by advancing to the state contest for declamation and also played a strong role in Growing Pains, the inter-society play. Dorothy Deems upheld the class of T940 by her performance ofMignon in Briar Rose. As juniors they advanced in all their fielclsvvith Dorothy Deems and Audrey Murray well-spot- ted in the operetta All at Sea and other juniors filling important places in the band and orchestra. They also had a strong representation in Science Club, School Patrol, literary societies, and others. ln various ways they proved themselves a credit to Moorhead High School. The juniors were represented by Harold Thysell in debate, and Bob Litherland wasthe only junior on the basketball squad. Elected as captain of the football squad, Harvey Olich was the outstanding junior, having played every minute of each game. Taking over the reins from the graduating seniors, the class of i940 elected four boys to fill the class officer vacancies. These boys being Norman Johnshoy, Orville Austin, Ben Anderson, and Roy Harrisville. The debate squad coached by Mr. Carl Hagen, set a record of accomplishment. Delores Pos- sehl, Muriel Janzen, Dorothy Deems, Nell Chinn, Orville Austin, and Harold Thysell traveled to Gus- tavus Adolphus where they debated and where Dorothy Deems brought more honor to the group by winning first place in a vocal contest. Delores, Muriel, Nell, and Harold captured the district title, bringing the first debate trophy in thirty years to Moorhead High School. The journalism class sent Nell Chinn, Ben Anderson, Phyllis Sands, Robert Politiski, Helen Sattre, Harlan Aldrich, Gertrude Paulson, Viola Erickson, Orville Austin and Jean Schuster to the Uni- versity of North Dakota at Grand Forks where Harlan A. won first place in an ad writing contest. Declamation also proved a fertile field for the T940 class. District honors were won by seven seniors, and Delores Possehl and Nell Chinn tooktop placs at the regional contest at Staples. Miss Pearl' Wilmers, the senior English teacher, coached the declamatory participants. The seniors were Well-represented in the various societies and clubs. The graduating class presents a vigorous picture of achievement ever-expanding and advancing, claiming the fame of Moorhead High School to farflung points. Our class is exemplified by the motto: Labor Conquers All. E161
