GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION A sound mind in a sound body. With this as a motto, the girls' physical education department provides a va- riety of body-building activi- ties including conditioning exercises, folk and ballroom dancing, numerous sports, and other activities. Many athletically minded girls, after completing the required year of gym, elect to pursue an advanced course of train- ing in the physical education department, directed by Miss LaVerne Ostermeyer. BOYS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION Freshmen boys not only keep up in physical fitness but also derive a great deal of pleasure from basketball, baseball, and other sports which are played in this re- quired subject for freshmen. Mr. VanLiew directs the activities of this department. COMMERCE With the aid of Mrs. Iean Eggleston and Miss Marjorie Dailey, the commercial de- partment offers typing, book- keeping, and first and second year shorthand for all stu- dents interested in finding a place in the business world. Not only are the fundamen- tals of these subjects taught but also the essentials of business relationships.

INDUSTRIAL ARTS The shop has taken its place among the other High School subjects and is recog- nized as a place to learn by doing. As the boys build their various projects they see their learning turn into concrete forms. The shop is also very valu- able to the school, as it does many jobs of repair and maintenance a r o u n d our school plant. In order that students may learn the language of con- struction and industry, a course in Mechanical Draw- ing is also offered. This de- partment is under the super- vision of Mr. Truax. FHESHMAN ENGLISH In Miss Rice's class the freshmen are launched on their three-year state required course in English. Aiming at increased command of oral and written expression, the freshmen English students, having familiarized them- selves with the fundamentals of grammar, are given num- erous opportunities to apply them in a practical way in composition work and oral activities. Familiarization with some of the world's nob- lest written expression is gained in a study of literature which is integrated with the other language activities throughout the year. HOME ECONOMICS What's cookin'? - Shall it be a cake, a dress, caring for the sick, or just caring for the home? All these and more are taught to the girls in our Home Economics department by Miss Sproat. Courses yielding enormous informa- tion in foods, clothing, home planning, home nursing, and others are offered girls who enroll in this department. Miss Sproat, who is direc- tor of Girls' 4-H has a great number of girls enrolled who have won for themselves sev- eral honors.

-.. s ft SOPHOMORE ENGLISH Sophomore students pur- sue at greater depth the fun- damentals of expression be- gun in their freshman year, aiming at increased facility in the art of oral and written communication. Students board the magic carpet of literature and travel back to the proud days of Home to witness the assassi- nation of Iulius Caesar in the great Shakespearean drama and soar forward again to picturesque England where they become acquainted with a classic example of the novel in Silas Marner. This class is taught by Miss McCleary. SOPHOMORE AND l UNIOR HISTORY The great panorama of human events through the centuries is reviewed and brought to life in the world history and American history classes. Wise students come armed with good arguments to this class, ready to defend their opinions in what we under- stand is often a quite anima- ted and thought-provoking exchange of ideas. World history, a sopho- more elective course is taught by Mr. Potter, while the American history class, a course required for all juniors is taught by Mr. Brock and Miss Gunderson. HEALTH Of preeminent importance is a knowledge of good health habits. With the pur- pose in mind obacquiring such knowledge, the mem- bers of the sophomore health class study physiology and acquaint themselves with the ways of Wholesome, health- ful living. This course is taught by Mr. Van Liew.
