Brawley, Jr. Vice- Chairman; Mr. Frank P. Fields; Mrs. Martha D. West; Mrs. Beth N. Jefford; and Mr. William S. Neel, School Attorney. Working together with Dr. William L. Brown, Superintend- ent of Mooresville City Schools, they discussed and set- tled issues that arose in our school system. Each had an avid interest in the students and a devotion to quality edu- cation. Dr. Brown, responsible for directing the entire system, visited our school frequently. He spoke casually with the teachers and students to see that operations ran smoothly. His support of our work was appreciated by all; and on each occasion, he was sincerely welcomed. Dr. William L. The other office personnel. Mrs. Jane Almond and Miss Kay Bowles, also worked hard to improve our school. They kept the attendance, school records, and all communications coming to and from the office. Mrs. Zora Weisbecker and Mrs. Mary Lou Lawson aided students in career and college opportuni- ties. O. We as students at M.H.S.. are proud to thank them for a job well done. 23 Sing, sing a song. Yellow and blue make green. and zd ! u±ic Anyone who ever heard music echoing through the air late some nights knew it was the Mooresville Blue Devil Band practicing. The band accomplished much over the last year. It captured first place hon- ors of Class C” in the Myrtle Beach Sun Fun Festival. Members partici- pated in the Tournament of Champi- ons in Statesville and a marching competition in Richmond County. Christmas and Spring concerts were also given by the band. The chorus, too, worked very hard. Members competed in All- County. All-State. Mars Hill and Hon- ors chorus and attended a clinic in Statesville. The chorus also gave a Christmas concert. Art I and II courses were offered for the creative students who were always ready to help decorate M.H.S. by using their talents. Stu- dents. under Mrs. Pope's guidance, took part in area competition with many successfully garnering hon- ors. The great Pep Band. 24 What do you think you're doing. Chris? I On Fridays Shorthand students work to finish before the weekend. The doors to the trade and business world were opened to Mooresville High School stu- dents by courses such as Typing I and II, Short- hand. Accounting I and II and General Business. These prepared those students who were plan- ning a career in business fields for life after grad- uation. 25 I wonder if she knows I'm using one finger. Linda Brooks. Peggy Pope. The maintenance staff helped to keep M.H.S. neat and clean. The ladies in the cafeteria planned and provided lunches for approxi- mately 500 students every day. The entire stu- dent body appreciated the work these people did to provide nourishing meals and improve our school. 26 Maintenance Staff — Billy D. Moore and Naomi G. Mitchell. Making the Old Scratch is fun; it's the reading that puts us to sleep. Expliqu6! Xanyuaye and Communications The Language and Communica- tions Department, headed by Mr. Roy Watkins, consisted of English, French, and Spanish. Students were required to take English each year at M.H.S. Some may also have wished to take a foreign language. French and Spanish were offered for these students. These courses not only taught usage of the lan- guage but also the customs of the French and Spanish-speaking peo- ple. 27 Don’t tell us that you don't understand that English. Bill. {at(i£,matLc± During the past year at M.H.S., there was a math course to fit every need. The fundamentals were taught in Business Math and Con- sumer Math for those students who wanted the basics. For the College- bound students. Algebra I and II. Geometry, and Advanced Math were offered. This class is such a bore. 28 Does anyone understand7 Can you simplify your explanation? l [sALa dzntzx Take a trip into the world of make believe or stand face to face with sus- pense. One could have done all this and enjoyed many more useful resources in the M.H.S. Media Center. Here at M.H.S., students were able to learn from the many resources in the library. Magazines, tapes, and films, as well as books, were avilable to all stu- dents this year. There was a brand new addition made to the library. It was called the Frank Fields section includ- ing books of politics and government. Here students could find information to help them with reports and research papers. Besides providing reference material, the library also gave students a quiet place to study. 29 We can stop acting when the camera is gone. E comes after D and before F . . . I think. Where did the ball go? Hit that ball!! ±ica[ Education There were various activities that one may have participated in P.E. classes. These ranged from soccer and field hockey to softball, volleyball, and football. The students also were able to go bowling at Moor Lane's Bowling Alley at least once a week. P.E. not only helped the students to learn how to play different sports, it also helped them to learn good sportsmanship. 30 Gimme. General and advanced biology students delved into the world of living things by studying ecology, genetics, anat- omy. Disection enriched their expe- riences. Chemistry and Physics were offered to those students who wanted a deeper knowledge and understanding of the composition and behavior of natural elements. Clay may pay off for an A. 31 Wud ya'II say? College bound students were able to take World History, while juniors covered 200 years of U.S. History in nine months. Sociology was availa- ble for those interested in studying social problems and learning to develop better relationships with others. 32 That's a book. Charlie. There’s going to be a window here. He was living here with Mr. and Mrs. Wade Carrigan and work- ing at Carrigan farms. Their son, Tommy, spent his senior year living in Australia. Some of Tord's M.H.S. classes included Advanced Biology, P.E., English. U.S. His- tory. and Sociology. He was an active mem- ber of the wrestling team and in the camera and outing clubs. Tord also carried the American flag with the Mooresville Blue Devil Band.. 80 WzzfzznA This year, 32 students from 19 different coun- tries spent their first weekend together in Mooresville. They were sponsored by the A.F.S. Club and community chapter. The students lived with A.F.S. Club members and attended classes at school with them. Different cultures, costumes, and abilities were displayed by these students at a talent show given to the M.H.S. studen body. Picnics at the lake and parties completed the weekend. All the A.F.S. students seemed to have a good time. Relaxing at Lake Norman. The AFS group. 81 c rf-±±£,mlj[Lz'L This year we had some very interesting assem- blies. One of the highlights was A.F.S. week when 32 people from several different countries appeared and showed their talents. Another pro- gram introduced Mr. Edwards to the spirit ladder with the end result being a pie in the face. The annual Super Guy Award has always been a favorite among students. Chuck Crouch was named Super Guy 1978-1979. Last spring, the F.E.A. sponsored a talent show. Many students participated in the program. It was a big success. The Beta Club also had their annual induction and Thanksgiving service. Mr. Edwards at the top of the spirit ladder. 82 83 ()r S iJ xom Come Sail Away was the theme of the 1978 prom. The Fiber Industries Recreation Room was magically transformed into a harbor with sopho- more slaves dressed as sailors. Sandy Morse was crowned queen, and each senior girl was pre- sented one red rose. Prom Queen — Sandy Morse 84 85 7979 Staff The Pitchfork Staff was responsible for publica- tion of the annual. From August until mid-Janu- ary. they worked on the first draft. From February until final publication, they worked on revisions sent to them by the publishing company. Sched- uling and handling of school pictures, alphabetiz- ing the entire student body and identifying stu- dents’ pictures are only a few of the duties of the staff. They devoted many hours to produce an annual that would truly represent M.H.S. 79. Laurie Brown. Editor; and Kim Smith. Assistant Editor. 86 Just one big. happy family! Juniors and Seniors who obtained this average were inducted into the club during an assembly in the fall of the year. All mem- bers had to uphold their scholastic average and had to display good character, leadership, and citizen- ship. Beta Club activities and projects were designed for the good of the school and the com- munity, such as the gift of fruit to Brian Center at Christmas. 1st Row: Bill Brown. Jack Smith. Kathy Priest.
