Superintendent of Schools Paul R. Jones M.A., Columbia University . . . FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLSl DESK: Very often we assume because we are born in a democracy that all of us will under- stand and appreciate it. Nothing could be a greater fallacy. Many people who have grown up as citizens of this country and have been exposed to all the democratic institutions of our way of life seem to have little understanding of the responsibilities that must Cbme with democratic government. Such people, have little regard for the rights and privileges of others and show little appreciation for the government of which they are a part. This is probably true because so many things in life are taken for granted. There is no quick method by which good civic attitudes can be established. Only as all of us study the development of democratic institutions can we value and appreciate them. Such a study will reveal that our social heritage has been a process of slow and painful procedure. It has been accumulated day by day and year by year; our generation has had the opportunity to profit by the work and struggle of many generations that preceded it. You as members of the CLASS OF 1958 have had many opportunities to study democracy in action. You have had the chance to participate in perhaps a small way. Now as the future leaders of your generation you will have within your experience the responsibility to take your proper place in this great nation of ours. May this ex- perience prove to be the most valuable to you and to the country of which you are a part. PAUL R. JONES Superintendent of Schools
