'Y it 0' ln these days of changing values and swiftly shifting emphases it must be very ditlicult for our young people to distinguish between the stable and the un- stable, the genuine and the spurious, the permanent and the transitory. Standards so long established as to have become traditional are no longer accepted. Geographic boundaries change overnight. In our educational systems culture becomes secondary in importance to expediency. rl he national debt climbs to staggering proportions while the purchasing power of the dollar vacillates and declines. To the everlasting credit of our young people is their demonstrated willing- ness and ability to adjust themselves to the unprecedented changes that confront them, and to carry on. They have accepted without a murmur the curtailment of their privileges and the enlargement of their obligations. 'l hey have laid aside their personal preferences for the larger privileges of service to country and to the cause-of justice and humanity. In their own unswerving loyalty are inherent all the permanent values that will forever outlast change. I salute our young people. Visions of a glad tomorrow when wars shall cease and our young men shall be free to return to their homes to live their lives free from fear and want and persecution in all its forms, to cultivate the arts of peace according to their individual talents and inclinations, to practice a philosophy of which Love is the dominant pattern, to reconstruct their world on foundations of inter- national honor and understanding, to the end that every city and hamlet in the world may go to sleep in peace when the night shadows fall and wake to gladness in constructive work when the new day dawns.
