ISENBERG GEORGE A. SWOYER GREGORY I. EGNER DJEDINCATJIUN CNG years ago man dreamed that one day he would find a land where he could speak his own thoughts freely and worship his own God unafraid-wwhere he could so govern himself that he would have freedom from want and from fear. That dream became America. Great faith, un- bounded courage, vast strength, ceaseless toil made it so. Today, not only is our freedom the dream of the world, but our strength is also its hope and our race against time, its prayer. Because Mr. lsenberg, Mr. Swoyer, and Mr. Egner, who are now actively engaged in the service of hu- manity, believe so thoroughly in the principles for which America stands and steadfastly hope in the win- ning, not only of the war but also of the peace, the Class of 1945 is proud to dedicate to them this book. The American fights, not for himself but for hu- manityf' 5 FOREWORD A S SCHOOL got under way last September, we heard more and more from the radio and from the press of a real desire of other people and countries to change our nation-its ideals, form of government and way of life. And there was borne upon us a deeper sig- nificance of what this war really means to us as Ameri- cans and to the whole world. Eagerly we students of Moorestown High School accepted the challenge and set about the three-fold task of Saving, Serving, and Conserving. In this, the 1945 Yearbook, we have tried to pre- serve the story of our part in the first full school year ofthe war. 6 . M. 'm,.f S-'N CONTENTS 1 fix .sas , H r . ,.,':,-MQW N . Visions of a glad tomorrow when wars shall cease and our young men shall be free to return to their homes to live their lives free from fear and want and persecution in all its forms, to cultivate the arts of peace according to their individual talents and inclinations, to practice a philosophy of which Love is the dominant pattern, to reconstruct their world on foundations of inter- national honor and understanding, to the end that every city and hamlet in the world may go to sleep in peace when the night shadows fall and wake to gladness in constructive work when the new day dawns. Visions like these have come to the sons and daughters of Moorestown High School. God bless them anear and afar as they follow the gleam. 'Y it 0' ln these days of changing values and swiftly shifting emphases it must be very ditlicult for our young people to distinguish between the stable and the un- stable, the genuine and the spurious, the permanent and the transitory. Standards so long established as to have become traditional are no longer accepted. Geographic boundaries change overnight. In our educational systems culture becomes secondary in importance to expediency. rl he national debt climbs to staggering proportions while the purchasing power of the dollar vacillates and declines. To the everlasting credit of our young people is their demonstrated willing- ness and ability to adjust themselves to the unprecedented changes that confront them, and to carry on. They have accepted without a murmur the curtailment of their privileges and the enlargement of their obligations. 'l hey have laid aside their personal preferences for the larger privileges of service to country and to the cause-of justice and humanity. In their own unswerving loyalty are inherent all the permanent values that will forever outlast change. I salute our young people. It is a privilege to work with them. 45677 Supernifin-9 Principal. 9 e ' M 1 uhhh 'W M-WS 'f'f ' .ll 3 if , . .l V. i : w fa- -,f l:::f5M. In your strong hands, in your eager minds, in your valiant souls lies our destiny. Each generation of you carries the torch forward a lit- tle farther on the long and hitter road of progress toward the distant horizon of ultimate fruition. That you should, in this hour of our trial and trav- ail, choose to help, leaves me with something like a catch in the throat, a mist in the eye. It was Isaiah who said in the Sacred Book, A little child shall lead them , and in this, your holy effort, you will find, like Sir Galahad, the strength of ten, for like him, you are pure of heart. With the tinkling laugh in my ears of a little boy who also does his part, I and mine send you from far away a prayer that God's blessing may rest upon you always. DOUGLAS MACARTH UR. I0 Making America Strong HOU, too, sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O Union, strong and great! Yes, of Course we remember who said that-Longfellow, wasn't it? But what did he mean? How can we make our Union strong and great? The answer to this problem lies in the strengthening of the three fundamental institu- tions of our society-the family, the school, and the church. Let us study each more closely. Our family life today is not what it should be. Many factors have had a com' bined etfect of breaking up the family life that we formerly held so dear. Movies, automobiles, the warfall have disrupted the family by taking either parents or children out of the home for a considerable length of time. We must learn to com- bat these threatening factors so that the family will be capable of fulfilling its purpose-providing a happy, wholesome life for its members. Perhaps the best method of improving family life is through parental assertion. The parents of American children should impress upon their youthful minds the importance of family life to the common welfare. When we have built up family ties and rela- tionships in this way, we shall have taken a large step towards making a stronger America. Closely related to the family is the school. Children must receive instiuction in excess of regular school work. They must be taught how to develop their per- sonalities and talents in order to make themselves more useful to the society in which they live. Democratic living ought to be stressed so that future members of our democracy will profit by the mistakes of those before them. It has been said that the modern school is deviating from its real purpose. This is undoubt- edly true. Those who control the schools should realize that the school exists for the purpose of giving boys and girls a good start in life by helping them to form good habits and to acquire fundamental knowledge and skills. The modern theory of sugar-coated education must be abandoned. Many of the shortcomings of modern youths can be traced back to their schooling and in most cases a lack of discipline is the primary fault. A drastic revision of our educational methods is necessary for an alert, intelligent people. The third, and perhaps the most important, institution in a democracy is the church. In recent years there has been a general disregard for religion, evident in many ways. Sunday is no longer a day of prayer and worship, but rather one of good times and merry -making. 'lhis abandonment of religion calls to mind the fall of the Roman Empire hundreds of years ago. Early Romans had estab- lished a firm religious foundation, which, as time passed on, was thrown into a state of decay. 'lhe Romans decided that they would have a good time while they could, much as we of the modern world are doing. The immediate result was the destruction of family life, followed by the complete collapse of the entire Roman Empire, heretofore termed unconquerable. Hence, if we wish to avert disaster, we must return to our religion, for the fundamental truths are the key- note of successful living in a democracy. Thus we see that if each of the three basic institutions-family, school, church-is strengthened, Old Glory will continue to wave over a strong and united land of the free and home of the brave. IACK BERGIN, '-15. ll K !??f wk Y w Y 1 1 1 CLASSES l HE Class of 1943 entered Moorestown High School in September, 1959, with an enrollment of 224. The highlight of this yea-r, as in all sophomore years, was the selection of our class rings. Then, as juniors, and 'tupperclassmenf' our activities increased. The Iunior play, Peg oi My Heart, by I. Hartley Manners, will long be remembered. And who will ever forget the thrill of the Iunior Prom? XVith Howmzo CRABTREE MARIAN RODNEY h Mr. Barthold as our class adviser, we com- pleted our junior year in a whirl of excite- ment. Xllhen we assembled in September, 19-12, we found that many students had not re- turned, so that our class numbered only 156. Now, as our last year draws to a close, even this number has been depleted. Twelve of our boys are serving in the Armed Forces, and many others will leave soon, or after graduation. Two, also, left for college at the beginning of the second term, leaving us only 136 members. However, it is to this, our senior year, that we point with pride. The Nloorestown lligh School Scrap Drive, which reached mam- moth proportions and netted us 3165.90 for the Red Cross, will long live in our memories as well as in the memories of Dloorestown residents. At last we have reached our final goal, and here, in our yearbook, we have tried to depict our numerous activities. Working in cooperation with the New Iersey Fish and Game Commission, we have helped to restock stream and field with fish and game and trapped rabbits from areas of city victory gar- dens to release in the country. We have built and maintained bird shelters and fed wild game during the winter. The gas shortage of this past school year has curtailed our activities somewhat and we have gone out on trips to rebuild shelters and feed game only during especially severe weather. However, our club programs have been highly interesting, for there is always something new in the sportsman's field. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS Our librarv assistants, pictured above, are the boys and girls who volunteer to serve in the school library one or more periods each week. Wlithout their help the work of our school library could scarcely be maintained. Uur librarv collection of over -1,500 books is used by High School, lunior School and Grade Schoolfxvr nearly 1,200 students of widely varied ages and interests. All lunior School and High School students received instruction in the use of the library and its tools as soon as possible after the opening of school and, from that time, our days were busy, indeed, in the library. Because of the inadequate size of our library room we have been forced to turn awav students nianv times during the year. Nevertheless our records show that nearly 200ipupils visited the library daily this year. It is the routine work of checking the attendance of these students and of circulating about 100 books daily, as well as maga- zines and reference books, which is carried on by the library assistants. ln addition, there are many bits ot' clerical work, typing, filing, reading shelves, preparing book displays and similar necessary tasks which are performed by these same assistants. Vllithout their help our library would be quite unable to function as smoothly and as constantly as it does and the student body, as well as the librarian, may well be grate- ful to this loyal group. 80 HONORS AND AWARDS RATIONING Special honors are due all the teachers of Moorestown Township Schools for their help in getting out Ration Books One and Two and the Gas Ration Book and for their work on the registering of tires. THE SCRAP DRIVE AND THE YVAR BOND AND STAMP SALES Honor, too, to the Problems of Ameri- can Democracy Classes, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Swalm, for their efficient work in conducting the Scrap Drive, which sal- vaged over 60 tons of war materials. And to the Iunior boys, with Nelson Hagan at the helm, for their job of tire sorting. The entire student body deserves credit for getting behind the sale of War Bonds and Stamps to the extent of 351,000 be- fore the Easter Vacation. Pictures of many of our War Efforts are on pages 57, 58 and 59. IUNIOR RED CROSS The work of the Iunior Red Cross is carried on largely through groups. While meritorious work has been done by Doris Hart, Margaret Riley, Barbara Smith and Doris Smith, the major portion of the production work has been done by home- room or club groups. Special honors go to the following groups for outstanding con- tributions: Miss Shinn's Room-sewing Mrs. Daniels' Room-knitting Miss Haas' Room--construction work Mrs. Kemper's Room-construction work Mrs. Chegwidden's Art Classesf-posters and place cards Mr. Noyes' Classes-shop work Business Education Societyfmoney con- tribution Miss Law's and Miss Terwilliger's Sew- ing Classese-sewing Miss Davis' Room--money contribution MRS.
