Dutch culture was the only other course offered and many in the class spent their school time clomping around in wooden shoes vshile plugging up holes in the dike. It was necessary to take naps after all this education and as there were no cots, the class slept on blankets on the floor. One day during rest hour a mouse ran across a boy's chest and had to be killed and carried off on a rake by Mr. Jones. The class was still talking about the mouse when. in second grade, accompanied by newcomers Eph and Jay, it was discovered that the classroom was laid out in the form of a town with the aisles as streets. The members of the class took turns selling food and making change in the tmy grocery store and mailing letters at the post office The big event of the year for the postman came on Valen tlnes Day, when he had a large boxful of billets doux to deliver Third grade was ushered in with a whoop as Miss Sweigart introduced Indians their habits and customs Indeed the students even made their own deerskln robes out of sheets adorned with Indian ish crayoned symbols Finally the class members accompanied themselves 1n their Rain Dances with drums made out of ice cream cartons and inner tubes Mary Lou arrived in time for the excltements of fourth grade. lt was on one of the numerous nature walks that someone discovered an interesting- looking cocoon. It was taken back to the classroom dropped into a jar and forgotten. Several weeks later there were praying mantises in all parts of the room. lt became common for a pupil to in- terrupt a teacher by saying. l got another one, and running to the window to thrust out an unwary praying mantis. It was also during this year that the girls formed two soccer teams, the Bluebirds and the Violets. They were rather unevenly matched -Maryis Violets winning only seven games out of forty-two played against Claire Lippincott's Blue- birds. ln sixth grade, the class with its new member, War- ren. was more active than ever. The glory of safety patrol had caught its eye, and then and there a squad was introduced at Moorestown Friends' School and neither rain nor snow nor wind nor hail could keep its members from their appointed posts. Seventh grade opened with the addition of the Westfield gang including Philip, Betsey, and Sandy B. It was during this year that the class was intro- duced to 'cthe dancef' Indeed the dancing class teacher nearly went wild as all the couples insisted on dancing on the squeaky floor boards. The ener- getic debates in social studies class were great fun but the class was disappointed when Mr. Price's field trip to points of interest around the world failed to materialize. Shakespeare occupied the thoughts of the eighth graders as they presented their first theatrical pro- duction-As You Like It- which proved to be a comedy of errorsf, For instance, Phil, knowing that he became hungry quickly, wrote his name on a banana which was in a bowl of fruit on stage. His resourcefulness sent the actresses into spasms of giggles. The May Pole dance also proved to be the girls' Waterloo when they pulled the tangled pole over in front of a horrified queen and aston- ished parents. Holly, Lauren, Sandie G., Rochelle, Larry. Sigrid, Babs. Terri. and Walt entered ninth grade just in time to start the round of class roller skating par- ties. They were also on hand to see Mary Lou, bribed a dime by each girl, kiss Eddie Hendrickson. Franke, John and Joe joined the class in tenth grade and soon entered Mrs. Ricketts group of Sophomore Banderlogs.,' The gang decorated their Spook House for the Friendship Fair with dry cattails. By the end of the evening the room was ankle deep in cattail fluff. The class was all but complete when Lois, Pat, Jeannette, Eleanor and Bill entered in eleventh grade and Warren returned from his three-year vacation. The usually talkative members hit a snag in the middle of the year-what to say on the podium. Betsey overcame the problem to win the Junior Speaking Contest with flying colors. While there were many small arguments during Sun Dial meetings, they were nothing to those concerning the Junior Prom. The problem was-how to trans- form a roll of chicken wire into a cloud. The re- sult resembled a lumpy mattress but . . . When Ute came from Germany, the Senior class was complete and together, with hope they could tackle yearbook deadlines, senior play problems. and college applications, knowing that 'fthe end was not far off. However, together they could also share the excitement of Senior Week with its round of parties. Commencement marked the final event of the year and thus the history of the class of '58 was brought to a close.
