MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS . . . . . 20-59 Many extra curricular activities help to make the memories of our high school days happy ones. Athletics, iournalism, student government, clubs, social events and honor awards give us as participants or spectators many moments to remember. GRADUATION DAY. . . It is with mixed emotions we came to our senior year, for although we look For- ward to college or employment, we know that graduation day marks the end of what to most of us have been carefree and happy days. FRIENDLY PERSUASION . . Without the generous support of our patrons, THE FLAME could not be pub- lished, therefore it is a pleasure to in- clude this section of our book. The corps of gentlemen pic- tured on the left work day or night to keep the building com- fortable inside and beautiful outside. The ladies work con- stantly to provide clean rooms and halls. Mr. Miller owns the fleet of buses that cover over 900 miles per day, 162,000 miles per year to transport our thousand high school students not to mention the elementary students to the various buildings. This year proved to be no exception. Though the season record is improving slowly, our team is steadily moving toward a winning season. Our boys started the season with three winsp one of which was won in double overtime. The never-say- die spirit displayed by our team was second to none. This our hoopsters proved by beating North Allegheny who was then the section leader. Next season should prove even more success- ful for our team. The loss of only five seniors coupled with the great amount of experience gained by the iunior squad members and the success of the J.V. 's should produce a sound squad for next season. The Flame published annually, Scrambles issued monthly, and our weekly or- gans, Moon Beams and Moon High News, constitute a great deal of reporting for the students and patrons of Moon High. Both the FLAME and MOON BEAMS are members of the Pennsylvania and the National School Press Association. The Flame also is a member of the Columbia School Press Association. Moon Beams, the oldest of our journalistic endeavors, boasts twenty-three con- secutive years of service to the school. The Flame and Moon High News are both publishing volume 22, School Scrambles, the in- fant of the group is now two years old. THE FLAME This twenty-second best Flame yet has grown from a very small book which the Class of T936 published at a total cost of two hundred and fifty dollars. This year on a budget of ten times that sum we boast of several Firsts in Flame history. We not only have the first book to go over T00 pages, but we are the first to present the 8 lf2 x ll inch volume. We, the staff, and Miss Braun, our s nsor, respectfully submit this T957 issue of the FLAME as a worth? successor to a long line of successful FLAMES. 00 oo ,-:vvf- WS Skrt -Q FLAME STAFF ANNEX For the third year iuniors have been invited to work with the senior staff. One member is chosen to serve in each de- partment. Those who meet the requirements will form the nu- cleus of the next year's staff. Saddened by John Tilly's untimely death, the class estab- illy Award which included a small gold football to be given to the outstanding sophomore football player each year the recipients name on a plaque. Libbie Gillis and Dan Brooks received the Joanne Caponecchi Award for outstanding citizenship in their junior high years, Our sophomore officers were John and Jim Williams elected in his place, Clarkg and Floyd Greer. Our money- X - 84 welcomed Mrs James C Craw- son, our sponsor, we quickly organized ourselves as a class with the election of our first class officers who were Jean Mamhout, Presidentg David Baker, Vice President: Carol Sullivan, Secretaryg and Dave Heinein, Treasurer. For our first money making project we sold balloons and trombones at the football games Our first social event was a class picnic at Coraopolis Park. In eighth grade the Moon Township students were joined with the Crescent Township students. To accommodate the increased enrollment until the new Moon High School was constructed classes were held in two different shifts, with some students arriving as early as 8:00 a.m. and others not arriving until 10:30 a, m, Our first class party in January of 1953 was our only social event other than our picnic at the end of the year at the Coraopolis Park. As a money-raising proj- ect the entire class sold ma gazines. The class officers for eighth grade were Jean Marnhout, Myrna West, Carol Sullivan, and Joe De Chellis, -7 Z z, 5 E x i if e 5-1-vw The Junior-Senior Prom was the big order of business in our junior year. As our theme we used Song of India and incorporated our class colors into the decorations. A bandstand built to resemble the Taj Ma- hal provided the background for the Carlyn-aires the Prom orchestra. Most of us attended the After-Prom Party at the Greater Pittsburgh Air- port's Horizon Room. As juniors we were the first students to take a course in Driver Training, which included classroom and behind the wheel instruction. Many prospective college students took a trial run of the College Entrance Examination Boards. Seven members of the class were inducted into the National Honor Society, This year we again sold magazines and sponsored a rummage sale at Barcaskey Motor Sales. As a class event we had a spaghetti dinner with a dance following in the gymnasium. The Caterer's Club was organized by our class under me guidance of Mrs, Crawford to serve all school dinners. The junior offi- cers were Floyd Greer, Ronald Dunmire, Joyce Blanchard, and Bob Burns. J 1 5 s A ' 1 ' -rvlgriae Q7 Q5 it 1 s 5 va 1 Being freshmen meant being able to attend dances and thus a whole new social world was opened to us. As our money-making projects during the year we sponsored a square dance in the gym- K. naslum and again sold magazines. This year our officers were Leonard Girardi, Joyce Rehburg, Joyce Blanchard, and Myrna West. Since during this term the new building was only partly completed, we commuted between buildings to attend classes but most of us did not mind the inconvenience since we knew that the next year we would be able to enjoy the excellent facilities of the new build- ing. Our most exciting and eventful year was, of course, our Senior year. The senior play Time Out For Ginger, under the direction of Mr. H. Robert Shissler and Miss Shirley Lunt was a great success. Our senior Roimd-Up, our fall social event, consisted of a delicious turkey dinner, in the cafeteria and a dance in the gymnasium. Around Christmas time we sold Christmas cards and held a Christmas party in the cafeteria with Pat Santucci acting as Santa Claus. During the winter months the yearbook staff, under the guidance of Miss Braun, spent many Sundays preparing the Flame to go to press. The Senior Revue 5'7 Varieties was presented March first to a capacity audience and featured vocal, instrumental and dancing numbers by approximately 85 members of the class. Myrna West received the DAR good citizenship award and Libbie Gillis represented Moon at All-State Band, Fifteen addi- tional members of the class were inducted into the National Honor Society in January. Due to a petition of some interested students, a special course in advanced mathematics, taught by Mr. E. P. Hawes, was offered to prepare students for college work. Our senior officers were William Rafferty, President: Edward Kaleugher, Vice Presidentg Carol Sullivan, Sec- retary: and Norman Wiley, Treasurer. xXN Z s X X X X is ds Fl E4 ' i-.. :fpri- .
