Studen Develop The Power in Patience I sit in her office on the couch, relieved of the pressure of some of the deep dark secrets of my past. The question comes abruptly, IlCan I hug you? I nod yes as she comes over and throws her arms around me. The tears of relief and an- swered prayer course down my cheeks in what seems to be an unending stream. She says nothing as I cry tears that should have been cried almost eight years ago. She doesn't care that lim soaking her, she waits patiently for me to be able to stop on my own. Exhausted and red-eyed I look up at her, noticing the tears of empathy on her own face. Handing me a Kleenex, she says, l'How do you feel? IlBetter, I reply and turn to blow my nose. l'After all these years, I thought I'd forgotten how to cry! We laugh a little as a sense of finality of what has been healed begins to set in and rejoice to- gether over a victory that has been hard won. Counseling is never easy, and the answers are even harder to come by. In Student Development, a tough goal to 'lPresent every man complete in Christ iCoI. 11283 has been set as the guiding principle. Patience is what marks the department most notably. Student Development is a multifaceted part of this school, dealing with almost anything with which a student needs help, from a case of the flu to a memory that still hurts after many years to roommate hassles and hangups, a listening ear is available and practical advice lor a bed in Health Servicel is free. -A student who's been there

Examples in Action While I looked for the place that God would have me work after graduate school, I prayed that the Lord would place me where I could minister. After my first few weeks at Moody, I found that God has more than answered my prayers. lt excites me to know that I work with a staff who also sees their job as a ministry to students. The Residence Life staff includes Residence Super- visors Brian Bill, Dorothy Hostetter, Sue Shickley, and myself, Pete Mills. Completing our staff are Mr. Tim Arens, Director of Residence Life, Diane Desaulniers, Residence Life Secretary, and our Houghton and Culbertson Hall deskworkers Ruth Zaharek and Virginia Oldham. Together we try to know Christ more and more as Lord and Savior. From this flows our commitment to help students develop thence the name of our department, Student Developmentl as individuals and as a community honoring Christ within the Residence Life program. We do this through RA leadership training, administrative du- ties, counseling, and building relationships with stu- dents. You may also find us involved in disciple- ship, speaking at fireside chats or joining floor talk, anywhere we can be with students. When it comes right down to it, we are trying to model Christ to students, so we can encourage one another in Christian maturity. This is what de- velopment from a Christian perspective is all about. Our verse for the year Ephesians 4: 15-16, states this best: lllnstead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. INIVI Peter I. Mills Clockwise: Sue Shickley, Pete Mills, Brian Bill, Dorothy Hostetter
