And He put a child on my knee, a filthy, matted bunch of wiggles, a striking combination of curious eyes, unrestrained laughter, and hollow emptiness. All He said to me was, Love But I said, How, Lord? How, when I know nothing of poverty or gang wars or food stamps? How when I have known nothing but sheltered, middle class USA all my life? That's all you've ever known? replied He. Feeling rather humbled, I groped for an appropriate response. I found none. Suddenly, a vivid image came to mind. I saw Jesus. And there, amidst the opposition of shel- tered, middle class Jews, was Jesus, cuddling children on His lap. Filthy? Those children proba- bly were. Wiggling? Without question. Loved? More than they ever knew. An impatient tug brought me out of my pensive mood.
