Since June, 1897, Mr. Norton’s genius has been entwined with the development and marvelous accomplishments of the Col- portage Association; and since he has been so intimately associated with the Moody Bible Institute through the Bible Institute Col- portage Association and from 1941 to the present has been a mem- ber of the Board of Trustees, the ARCH staff takes great pleasure in dedicating to him the 1946 issue. We would take account of the following outstanding qualities: I. Clearness of vision. Mr. Norton quickly caught Mr. Moody’s vision of preach- ing the Gospel to the multitudes by means of the printed page. Included in this vision are the following: 1. The desire to secure the salvation of lost souls who _ otherwise would not be reached; 2. To establish young Christians in the faith and cause them to be fruitful in their lives; 3. Lo stimulate older Christians to a life of prayer and service; 4. To combat error and all kinds of evil, and to deliver those who are being ensnared thereby; 5. To counteract the influence of pernicious books and magazines which flood the country. II. Indomitable Purpose. Despite changes which have come into the world in the last half century, one invincible purpose has dominated the life of this servant of the Lord. III. Indefatigable energy. Through many years, early in the morning, continually through the day, and late at night, he has gone about his work, reading manuscripts, passing on suitable books for distribution, and supervising their publication. His abiding faith in God has given him the poise to work on with patience. We believe that when the Lord Jesus Christ returns, Mr. Norton will hear the welcome words of approbation, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant ... enter thou into the joy of thy lord? © wt es a i! eo a pe x yw Aice SFL.ICOVaHTON President Ho REE FEL OOO NTI IE OE Pore ead “All experience is an arch wherethro’ Gleams that untravell’d world, whose margin fades For ever and for ever when I move” Thus wrote Tennyson for “Ulysses:’ If ex- perience is an arch, it is exceedingly appropriate that this book of experiences should be named The Arch. You who are the graduates of this year’s classes, having once entered the near side of the Institute Arch, are now finding exit on the far side, to go your various ways into service of divine appointment. You will find fading mar- gins and lengthening horizons as you go on, but you will find the Presence of One who goes be- fore and with His own. Dr. Max Issac Reich, Director of the Jewish Missions Course and member of the Faculty of the Moody Bible Institute, Bible teacher, poet, Christian, was God’s gift to His Church. Those of us who knew him will not forget the depth of his faith, the enthusiasm of his spirit, the great- ness of his love. Never sacrificing the truth, he nevertheless was able to em- brace all in the arms of his spirit. He was a friend to all men—Jews and Gentiles, a servant of the Church of Christ, and a lover of his Lord and Saviour. gn Hlemorivm TMAx I. Retcn It would seem appropriate to conclude this brief memorial with words which Dr. Reich often quoted and which, in so many ways, characterize his life: “Drop Thy still dews of quietness, Till all our strivings cease: Take from our souls the strain and stress, And let our ordered lives confess The beauty of Thy peace. “Breathe through the heats of our desire Thy coolness and Thy balm; Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm? “Be thou an exdmples™, Unesesatcmtuc words of encouragement written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, who was a young leader in the early Christian church. The idea expressed by the Greek word translated “example’”’ means ‘‘a figure formed bya blow” in order to make an exact impression. ‘Techn1- cally, it refers to a pattern, in conformity to which a thing must be made. In the ethical sense it refers to that which should be imi- tated. Christian leaders are the patterns for Christian living that people consciously and A. FRANKLIN BROMAN Superintendent of Men unconsciously adopt. The teachings of our Lord are interpreted by the lives of those who profess to serve Him. Students in training for Christian serv- ice are designing those patterns day by day, which become more firmly fixed as time goes on. I appeal to you that you fashion the de- sign carefully and prayerfully so that our Lord will be seen in your service and leadership. 12 ANGELYN G. DANTUMA Superintendent of Women Someone has said that “‘pre- cepts instruct us, but examples as- sure us that they are possible:’ God assures us by the example of the Lord Jesus Christ that His standards for the walk of a Christian are at- tainable through the power of the Holy Spirit. “He that saith that He abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked’ For others to hear Christ in our words, to see Christ in our con- duct, to feel Christ in our charity, to sense Christ in our spirit, to be challenged for Christ by our faith, to be pointed to Christ by our purity is to have fulfilled in our lives Paul’s injunction to Timothy, “Be thou an example of the believers:’ You who are this year’s gradu- ates have been with us long enough for us to learn to love you, and now you are leaving us. We shall miss you, but we would not hold you here, for your purpose in coming was to prepare to leave — for the places of service to which you might be called. We bid you God’s speed as you turn your faces toward those various fields. Registrar and Secretary of Faculty As you go may you be re- minded that there is one task to which you are each committed alike —that of presenting to a needy world another translation of the Bible, a translation of the Word you have been studying into terms of every day living, that those who read may see a steadfast and faithful, consis- tent and true, vital, victorious life, and seeing it, recognize the Author, by whose love you are constrained. What a great com- mission and what a serious responsibility for God’s children. For the class of December, 1945, no better motto could have been chosen, inas- much as 75 per cent of our members have already felt definitely called to be missionary laborers. God’s commission is wide spread, and it begins at home—“‘In Jerusalem’’—we can class that as city missions. Some of our classmates have the assurance that this type of labor is for them. Then it says—“In all Judaea’”—we can Class this as home missions. What a blessed privilege to carry this Gospel unto our own people in the neglected areas! “In Samaria’ — what does this mean? — To us it may mean the Jews, the Japanese, some peo- ple of Europe—the despised people. ‘And to the uttermost parts of the earth’’—to the outer- most rim of the inhabited earth. Where ever He calls, we are willing to go. We praise the Lord that He has seen fit to provide such a training center as the Moody Bible Institute. Regardless of where our Lord calls us to serve or what type of training we need for His service, we are banded together for one purpose—to win souls to Jesus. “WITNESS UNTO ME)’ what a blessed privilege. May the Lord keep us true and faithful to His command, for His glory. CHARLES C. MASSON Montclair, New Jersey Presbyterian U.S.A. Others likewise have been chosen for tasks great and small. But what a joy, yea, what a respon- sibility to be chosen, as Paul was, for the task of bearing Christ’s name! It was of this name that Peter spoke when he stated, “There is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved:’ ‘This name was rightly called by Isaiah “Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace;’ for it is by this name, and this one only, that light permeates darkness, the guttermost is transformed to the uttermost, the villain becomes the valiant, the helpless becomes the helper, the dreary night is replaced by the dawn of the glorious light, lives of sin are transformed to lives of love, and a de- spondent dread of death is replaced by a joyful realization of possession of life everlasting. What a soul-stirring, heart-warming, life-giving name! As we, the class of August ’46, consider the fact that we too have been selected to bear this name, we keenly feel our great need of constant dependence upon God’s strength for the task. Although the task is great and the trials many, we are glad to be included in that vast number of saints whom God has labeled in His matchless grace, “Chosen, to bear my name:’ ® we 3 oe a eo : ee - x 4 ee 1).
