Attention please! All flights east have been canceled and an all-out search is being made for a Boeing 707 Jet-Number 1313- down in the fog south of Casablanca. The passenger list will be posted in the lobby shortly; many are members of the American Peace Corps. ALBERT MROSS, pilot, and MICHAEL CANNADY, co-pilot, will make a full report to the CIA. I almost froze in my tracks! Those two were members of my class at MHS in ' 64. Perhaps more of those Peace Corps- men were from the old gang. I hurried to the big bulletin board, and sure enough, staring me in the face in bold letters was the name of FAYE RIELEY, occupation--head of the math depart¬ ment at Yale. She had won the Nobel prize for her new theory in abstract reasoning; and, incidentally, was the first female math teacher in the long history of the University. The next name listed was that of JUNE MILTON HAUPT--mother of the first quintuplets born in America since the Fischers in 1963, bound for home after an exhibition tour of the Far East. Next on the list was ANNE MOORMAN, professor of psy¬ chiatry at the University of Virginia, who was returning from a year in Malaya doing research on her doctoral dissertation-- the behavior of apes. Yes, there ' s another--LORETTA ROBERTS, permanent kink straightener who ' s made a fortune in the jungles--doing just that. No, not LARRY MORGAN! But, yes! Listed as a tourist, but really he ' s the new Lawrence of Arabia and is just on a jaunt to renew the strength his fellow classmen had envied years ago. I stood musing over the old crowd who had been such fun back in 1964 at Montvale. Here I was at that romantic cross¬ roads of the eastern world just starting on my first furlough from the Belgian Congo where I ' d served as medical adviser to the tribal chiefs. Dr. HELEN RUFF! (my title acquired after years of strenuous study). Ten years since I ' d seen my old classmates, I thought. The cry behind me USA Paper, made me turn, and there I saw a strangely familiar face. Why it looked like--it was-- JOHNNY BROWN, Jr. He was the son of, and the living image of, my intellectual classmate who became principal of Montvale Elementary School upon Mr. McKee ' s retirement, and who was now on sabbatical leave with young Johnny earning his way wherever he stopped. Eagerly snatching a paper and bidding Johnny keep the change, I read the bold headlines. Passengers of big Jet saved by the new ARVID seat belts installed just for this flight. Well, ARVID HOLDREN ' S inventions had finally paid off. This was a Chicago paper and carried news from all over the US. There on the front page was a caption which caught my eye. Washington, D. C. DAVID THOMAS, assistant Secretary of the Treasury. The picture depicted his reception at the White House. Um-m, I thought, our money will be safe now! Below, and in slightly smaller type, I read that Miss LINDA OTEY had wonatripto Paris by her speed typing in Congressman MICHAEL LODGE ' S office. Turning the page there was this surprising announcement: LBJ ranch purchased by DICK ALPHIN and his brother Ber¬ nard. Another article stated that DANNY GARRETT had bought a great lumber industry in the California redwood forests;that TOM KIRKWOOD was operating a bus between Hialeah and Miami Beach, Florida. (He drops a few cents occasionally on the races). RODNEY LAM, new guide on the Blue Ridge Parkway, was pic¬ tured with a five-pound rainbow trout! On the sports page--yes--HAROLD DOOLEY has been made manager of the New York Yankees. He commutes weekly and works at Rubatex on the side to provide Brenda with a purple Rolls-Royce. What? CAROL BAKER has won second place in the Daytona races! Next, the society section yielded the information that JEAN STEVENS ' blonde hair had influenced the Prince of Pawpawhilly to relinquish his right to the throne in order to marry the girl with the golden locks; that MARGARET DICKERSON, contrary to her quiet nature at MHS, is a bubble dancer in Frank Sinatra Jr. ' s Las Vegas GOLDEN TRIANGLE. Well, guess what? CORDELIA BOOTH ' S knack of gleaning gossip has made her society editor of the ROANOKE TIMES. Now this doesn ' t sur¬ prise me! JANE ROSS is costumer for Hollywood ' s Doris Day, and DOLORES ALLEN heads ababy-sittingsyndicate catering to the Dennis-the-Menace type. ELSIE TYLER, stylish hostess¬ secretary in the gleaming white dome-shaped new coliseum in Roanoke has just returned from the Mardi Gras. WAYNE BRAM- LETT is her personal chauffeur, in uniform, driving the big black limousine. A few other odd bits of news--such as the signature, JIMMY NOELL, under a weird drawing advertising MAD Magazine; an item stating that JOYCE WOOD is recovering from a suicide attempt following a failure of her performance with a Beatle group; the latest World ' s Fair being held in the Goose Creek Valley at which EDGAR DIVERS is director of ' Lost and Found ' . (Ed spots ' em over the heads in the crowd). And, so help me, she ' s still at it! An article says that SHARON WALDRON is co-owner of a dairy which does no milking on Sundays. Horrors! ALMA DOOLEY had gone over Niagra Falls in a barrel. Oh, she fell in love with that wonder when she and Walter were there on their honeymoon in 1964. And can you grasp this? LINDA MCKINNEY the object of a world wide search--believed to be the victim of a snatch-and-run bachelor looking for a wife. I couldn ' t stop now. I feverishly searched for more names. I was rewarded! Listen to this: BARBARA BOWYER ' S new textbookon American history has been adopted by the fifty states. JUDY WHITWORTH ' S new novel, NO BUTTER ON MY BREAD has won the Pulitzer prize. Here are some interesting ads: Mrs. Edward Tyler, the former DORIS BRAMLETT, Hollywood hair stylist. Brunette customers preferred. PEGGY GILES-- LEIGH LINK—beauty culturists. Leigh has perfected a formula for calorie-free meals, and Peggy has divulged the secret of her 17-inch waistline. CATHERINE DOOLEY ' S restaurant for tiny tots now open for business. Great! MARTHA WRAY ANDERSON has won the America ' s Best Secretary award. JUDY WEBSTER, with her knowledge of photography, was snatched up by Eastman Corporation and is now a vice-president. That was just about all my classmates except that little old redhead, MA RY NAPIER. Well, I suppose she was graduated from Vassar long ago. Wait a minute--here in the corner is an item about PTA and Mary N. ? with an MRS degree. So she ' s wielding the paddle now instead of the old baton. So engrossed had I been that I was suddenly brought back to earth by the loud speaker calling my flight. I had to rush to catch that plane which would take me to the good old USA, state of Virginia and county of Bedford, where, if I were lucky, I might see some of the old friends I ' d just read about. All a-bo-a-r-d! Helen DuPre ' Ruff Judy Whitworth Anne Moorman Montvale High School June 8, 1964 19
