HISTORY September, 1958, saw seventy bug-eyed eighth graders crowded together in the auditorium at Montvale High. The twenty-three boys were ’’taken into the custody” of Mr. K. E. Coffman in the shop building; the forty-seven girls were shephered by Mrs, H. D. McKee into Room 5. After our official initiation on”Rat Day,” we elected our class officers who were: Tommy Thomas, president; Tommy Obenchain, vice-president; Judy Smith, secretary; Faye King, treasurer; Joyce Carter and Billy Carter, reporters. By the fallof’59we had reduced our ranks to fifty. Under the guidance of Mr. Clarence Mathews, the class elected as its freshman leaders Tommy Obenchain, president; Joyce Carter, vice-presi¬ dent; Faye King, secretary; Doris McClure, treasurer; and John Carroll, reporter. Much to our regret we were not privileged to induct the new ’’rats” into the noisy, boisterous life of Montvale. The year ended on a sad note when the trip to the Peaks was spoiled by rain. After a too-brief vacation, forty-five Freshmen entered the portals of the laboratory and mi¬ raculously became Sophomores, sponsored by Miss Alice Hylton, To guide our ’’silly” way this time, we had John Carroll, president; Tommy Obenchain, vice-president; Doris McClure, sec¬ retary; Faye King, treasurer; and Joyce Carter, reporter. We ended 1960 with a booming Christ¬ mas party in the school gym. The highlight of this year was being asked to assist the Junior Class ingiving the Seniors abanquet aptly styled, ’’Over the Rainbow.” The theme was vividly expressed in gorgeous hues. So we dressed in brightly colored costumes, filled our stomachs with food and our minds with memories and ideas for next year when we would be the hosts. Thus the Sophomore year rolled by and ended with a fun-filled picnic at the Peaks. Aswe (now) thirty-seven Juniors marched into Room 7 in the fall of ’61, Mrs, E. W. Hamm be¬ ing our sponsor, we realized that our loafing days were over. In becoming the leaders of to¬ morrow” we would have responsibilities to assume. We gave much thought to choosing the officers who would pilot us through this (eventful) year. Entrusted with this duty were Steven Cox, presi¬ dent; Cecil Connor, vice-president; Joyce Carter, secretary; Mary Moorman, treasurer; Ella Sue Coffman and Brenda Divers, reporters; and Tommy Obenchian, parliamentarian. Our first big project in the junior year was putting on the carnival in November. Our biggest moment came when our candidate, Ella Sue Coffman, was chosen Miss Montvale, 1962. Our new ’’queen” enter¬ tained us at her home at a wonderful Christmas party. After the brain-strain of exams, we were edified by the privilege of purchasing our rings; and for the first time, the Junior Class held a ring dance upon the arrival of those precious symbols of our approaching senior-hood. To honor the Senior Class with the best-ever entertainment we put our minds to work and came up with the first Prom Montvale High had ever had. The ’’Wiggling Wiblets” of Bedford provided music for dance and twist. To complete our happy voyage together, we were invited to the home of Steve Cox for a lawn party. At long last, filled with enthusiasm and a determination to make our last year our best, thirty- six dignified (?) seniors reported on September 4, to Mrs. Margaret Garrett, sponsor. Cecil Con¬ nor was chosen top officer; Steve Cox, his second in command; Doris McClure, the scribe; Joyce Carter, watchdog of the treasury”; Betty Boothe, news-release chief; and Richard Ruff, sergeant- at-arms. The final year’s memories are of the Christmas pageant, fund-raising attempts--selling Christ¬ mas cards, distributing programs at the basketball tournament, and presenting the play, The Path Across the Hill.” In May, weary aswe were with problems of our own and those of the burgeoning ’’New Frontier,” we danced to the music provided at the Senior Prom by our successors, the Juniors. Thus we ended five memorable years of our lives and emerged from MHS with our motto to steer us toward wide and varied horizons--”We dare to be different.” Montvale High School Steve Luck June 6, 1963 Mary Moorman 8
