Autumn Festiva Autumn leaves, corn shocks, pumpkins on the vine, and a fresh, clean smell in the ---- sounds like fall, doesn’t it? There is something special about every autumn, but this year at Montvale High School it was going to be something extra special. Everyone looks forward to the annual festival, sponsored by the ECHO, and this year we were all bursting with good ideas for decorations and entertainment. What about the color scheme?” Who’s going to bring the balloons?” Where in the world can we find enough brown, yellow, and orange crepe paper to decorate the stage?” The ques¬ tions piled higher and higher, and the decoration committee was feeling slightly panicky. Peo¬ ple scurried around like mad, trying to beat the zero hour. Suddenly, it was upon us! The big night had arrived and people began filing into our hal¬ lowed halls, expectancy of a good time shining in their eyes. Luckily, November 18 was also the anniversary of Sadie Hawkins’ Day, and this theme pre¬ dominated in the Bingo Booth. Betty Thomas was Daisy Mae, complete with an off-the-shoulder blouse and shorts. Ray Johnson was ’Lil Abner, in tattered jeans; and Bobby Humphries, wear¬ ing a Paris-styled burlap sack, and feathers, was a heap good Injun Joe. Money and prizes flew, and interest was high. Right next door, a talent show was in progress. Singing, piano, and dancing were offered. Naturally the main event was the election of the King and Queen of Autumn, but new features were offered this year. A fashion show, sponsored by the Deb Shop of Roanoke, the usual darts, pitching rings, etc., a cake walk, and a percolater walk were held. Betty Thomas and Tommy Berry were the victorious Queen and King; and while Betty was being crowned with beautiful pink Pom-Pom Chrysanthemums, donated by Wertz Florists of Roanoke, Tommy was beaming and being congratulated.
