Now we have only recollections, Ahead our future we cannot know. Our class is very small, Our hopes and aims are high. We wish to be successful, As the years go rolling by. We happily view with pride, Our struggles of might and main. For the highest marks in school, Are what we’ve strived to gain. We’ve heard a lot of sentiment, About commencement days. Of life’s great rattle, And parting of the ways. Memories are what we make them, And now as our paths divide. May we remember our old pals, And how we labored side by side. Our teachers have been loyal, Our principal loyal and more. Spurred on by praise and challenge, W e close the school house door. —Dorlee Martin— H ropnecij As our school days at M.H.S. draw to a close, we shall soon be on our own. Little do we know what our future will be, or into what path Fate will direct us. Last night, as I sat in my room thinking of our approaching graduation, I began to think on what the future holds for each of us. Drifting into a trance, I began to have visions — visions in which I was able to follow the future careers of my classmates. My vision was a sad and exciting one. It was 1961 and I was checking the roll and here’s what I found: NAME AMBITION DESTINATION Douglas Ahrens To be a rich man Died in poorhouse Elsie Boothe Homemaker Homebreaker Robert Bowyer To get married Working in the garage Betty Sue Burkholder School teacher Sales girl Emma Jane Coleman Athletic director Referee Billie Jane Davidson Nurse Serving a jail sentence for poi¬ soning a patient. Junior Dooley Bachelor Married and has eight kids Darden Earley Big game hunter Caught in his own trap Barbara Foster Nurse Bad nerves Jeanette Franklin Music teacher Missionary to China Eloise Grubb To have a maid Going home to scrub floors Billy Gross Merchant Buying groceries for his family Doris Hartberger Nurse Nursing her own aches and pains Helen Anne Hatcher Home Economics teacher Learning to boil water Shirley Hutchens To get a husband Basketball coach Bobby King Drive a Greyhound bus Holes in his shoes Nancy Luck Elementary teacher Teaching the twins to say Dad¬ dy Bad case of verbs Dorlee Martin English teacher Lloyd Orange To go to V.P.I. Has flooded Death Valley trying to irrigate it Myrtle Roop Salesgirl Sold her boy friend on the idea of giving her a diamond Paschal Rose To be successful President of P.T.A. Helen Jean Shelton Housewife Mr. Prichett’s secretary Peggy Stiff Elbert White John Whitworth James Witt Secretary Mechanic F armer To make up his history test Clerk in a 5 and 10 £ store Working on his children’s toys Hen-pecked” husband Farmer To my sorrow I suddenly awoke from my trance and thus ended my glimpses into the future of our classmates, even though there is much, I am sure, I overlooked. So now we, the Senior Class of ’51, say goodby to our high school career and begin the long journey into the careers of the future. Class Prophets Emma Jane Coleman and Nancy Luck Class Will Soon we will be leaving M.H.S. We hate to go, but, following the laws of Nature, all good things must come to an end. In parting, each member of this Senior Class wishes to will his most prominent characteristic or talent to a fellow student who most deserves such a gift. To the Sophomores we leave the task of doing everything we left undone. Remember you have two years to do it! To the Freshman Class we leave the pleasure of having three more years in high school. Now f or the roll call of Senior requests: Douglas Ahrens leaves his ability to keep from dancing with those lovely Senior girls to any Junior who is crazy enough to do the same. Helen Jean Shelton wills her love for typing, or rather the teacher, to Doris Catron. John Whitworth leaves his ability to be absent from school without an excuse to Jimmy Gar¬ rett. Peggy Stiff wills her thinness to anyone who has to squeeze through his Senior year. Nancy Luck leaves her love for Latin to anyone who is crazy enough to take it. Elbert White wills his ability to solve everyone’s troubles, but his own, to Bucky Hamm. Darden Early wills his “Adventures of Goose Creek” to William Early. Emma Jane Coleman leaves her position on the basketball team to Betty Thomas. Helen Anne Hatcher leaves her sympathy to next year’s editor of the Echo. Lloyd Orange wills his ring to Dot Vaughan (she wears it more than he does.) Robert Bowyer leaves all of his girl-friends to Tommy Berry (not that he needs them). Barbara Foster leaves her long black hair to Thelma Orange. Paschal Rose leaves his position as bus-driver to someone who can make it to school on time. James Witt wills his part in the minstrel to anyone who will try to do as well. Jeanette Franklin leaves her ability to play ’’Boogie Woogie” to Rebecca Brown. Elsie Booth wills her chewing gum to Bobby Garrett. (Watch out for Miss Rayburn, Bobby.) Eloise Grubb wants Miss Varner to take her place as being a housewife. (Miss Varner, you had better watch those dishpan hands.) Dorlee Martin wills her position in the kitchen to Beatrice Robertson. (We nope she’ll do as well as Dorlee.) Myrtle Roop transmits her friendly-quiet attitude to Peggy Dooley. Junior Dooley wills his dancing ability to Bobby Bartley. (They’ve been so entertaining to the Seniors this year.) Bobby King wills his love for the Senior Panda to James McCabe. Doris Hartberger wills her pep and energy to Mary Bohon. (She surely needs it.) Shirley Hutchens wills her happy-go-lucky ways to Jimmy. Betty Burkholder leaves her love for week-ends to her sister, Lucy. Billy Gross leaves his morning study period to Tommy Dooley. Billie Jane Davidson leaves her early morning blues to Ruth Morgan. We, the Seniors of ’51, leave years filled with hard work and good times to the future classes. Signed this, the 6th day of June, 1951. by the Senior Class of Montvale High School. Senior Class onq Tune: Star of the East Our days together have come to an end. So we will leave our classmates and friends. Our memories linger, both night and day, Of helping each other in our work and play. Chorus: Ole Montvale High School, to you we’ll be true, In days to come, and in all that we do, We’re always smiling where ever we go, Praising dear Montvale High We join together in saying good bye. Though we are smiling, we’d all like to cry. We’ll never forget you for making us strong, To carry us on, though life may be long. Hisfori) Of S emor Class One bright, sunshiny, September morning in the year of nineteen hundred forty seven, fifty four freshmen assembled in the auditorium. Our homeroom teacher were Miss Julia Foster and Mr. K.E. Coffman. Our officers for this year were: President, Nancy Luck; Vice-President, Helen Anne Hatcher; Secretary, Myrtle Roop; Treasurer, Peggy Stiff. Yes, this was our dear Freshman year, when everything was new to us and just as exciting. Speaking of excitement, never shall we forget that horrible RAT DAY! Everyone was anxious to see how the ’’Rats” would react to their punishment. Need I tell you how glad we were when it was all over. Our first party came in March. It was based on St. Patrick’s Day. Another event which we all enjoyed was our trip to Bedford Lake. Then came our Sophomore year and our class had been reduced to thirty-five members. Our officers for this term were: President, Paschal Rose; Vice-President, Helen Anne Hatcher; Secretary and Treasurer, Eloise Grant. Before the year was over, two of our girls had gotten married and left us. When time for the festival came, our representative for queen was Margaret Parker and how thrilled we were when she was elected Queen of M.H.S.” This year we took another trip to Bedford Lake. Our Junior year was about the most fun loving year to us. We sponsored a womanless wedding and it was really a worthwhile show. Our fashion show was also given the same night. One of the most cherished memories of this year was our Junior-Senior Banquet. We had as the theme Davy Jones Locker’’. The fun really came after everyone had finished eating. There was dancing, the grand march, and lots of games. Our officers for this year were: President, Shirley Hutchens; Vice-President, James Witt; Secretary and Treasurer, Helen Jean Shelton; Reporter, Emma Jane Coleman. Then at last it was time for our Senior year. Though everyone dreaded the thought of having to leave school, I think they were looking forward to all the Senior privileges and fun that goes along with your last year. We presented a minstrel in December which was a success with the help of very capable leaders. Our Senior play came next, then Class Night, our Baccalaureate Sermon and last Commencement. Our officers were; President, Lloyd Orange; Vice-President, Paschal Rose; Secretary and Treasurer, Helen Jean Shelton; Reporter, Emma Jane Coleman. Now that we are leaving behind us our classmates and teachers, we wish to thank our leaders from the bottom of our hearts for the wonderful courage and guidance they have given us, because we know it has been a rather difficult job for them all these years. Autumn Festiva Autumn leaves, corn shocks, pumpkins on the vine, and a fresh, clean smell in the ---- sounds like fall, doesn’t it? There is something special about every autumn, but this year at Montvale High School it was going to be something extra special. Everyone looks forward to the annual festival, sponsored by the ECHO, and this year we were all bursting with good ideas for decorations and entertainment. What about the color scheme?” Who’s going to bring the balloons?” Where in the world can we find enough brown, yellow, and orange crepe paper to decorate the stage?” The ques¬ tions piled higher and higher, and the decoration committee was feeling slightly panicky. Peo¬ ple scurried around like mad, trying to beat the zero hour. Suddenly, it was upon us! The big night had arrived and people began filing into our hal¬ lowed halls, expectancy of a good time shining in their eyes. Luckily, November 18 was also the anniversary of Sadie Hawkins’ Day, and this theme pre¬ dominated in the Bingo Booth. Betty Thomas was Daisy Mae, complete with an off-the-shoulder blouse and shorts. Ray Johnson was ’Lil Abner, in tattered jeans; and Bobby Humphries, wear¬ ing a Paris-styled burlap sack, and feathers, was a heap good Injun Joe. Money and prizes flew, and interest was high. Right next door, a talent show was in progress. Singing, piano, and dancing were offered. Naturally the main event was the election of the King and Queen of Autumn, but new features were offered this year. A fashion show, sponsored by the Deb Shop of Roanoke, the usual darts, pitching rings, etc., a cake walk, and a percolater walk were held. Betty Thomas and Tommy Berry were the victorious Queen and King; and while Betty was being crowned with beautiful pink Pom-Pom Chrysanthemums, donated by Wertz Florists of Roanoke, Tommy was beaming and being congratulated.
