It is believed that the first fieldhockey team was organized around 1940. Interest decreased, but in 1972 the team was reorgan- ized. lt took the place of girl's soccer team. 1973 Field Hockey Team Cheerleading was introduced in 1945. Miss Lewis was the sponsor of the five girls. They practiced during eighth period to perfect cheers and chants 1945 Montrose Cheerleaders Records of the baseball team go back to the twenties. Montrose has enjoyed the sport even before this date, so it is probable that the team played prior to the twenties. Up until 1968, baseball was usually played during the autumn. This only allowed four or five games to be played, so it was moved to the spring season when more games could be scheduled. Until the baseball field at the High School was built in 1975, the team played at the diamonds in South Montrose and Fairdale. 1933 Baseball Team

1940 Pole Vault 1938 Boys Volleyball Team Volleyball was formed in 1937 for both boys and girls. 1941 Boys Volleyball Team In 1923 Montrose participated in the first track and field meet in this area. By 1925 the interest and talent had grown to the extent that the team won the annual meet. A few years later a girl's team was added. Cross Country began in 1967 for the boys, and in 1976 for the girls. It is run in the fall season from August to October. The Varsity record for the past eleven years is 80 wins and 21 losses. If J.V., Junior High, and Girls records were added, the teams have 131 wins, 27 losses, and 1 tie. . Soccer was started in 1967. Montrose did not have a playing field the first year, so it was necessary to travel to Fairdale for practice and games. The teams have won many league champion- ships. A girls team began in 1969, but after two years was discontin- ued due to lack of competition.

1945 Girls Softball Team Wrestling was introduced in 1961. It picked up quite well, and now enjoys a long season and a large number of participants. This sport not only lets the team work for a winning season, but also encour- ages individual records. In 1945 a softball team was re-introduced after several years. Interest must have again decreased because in 1971 softball was re- organized. Tennis was first played as a varsity sport in 1967. This just included a boy's team for the first few years. This is one school sport that can still be enjoyed after graduation. The school does not have a tennis court, so Camp Montrose is used for practices and j games. 1963 Golf Team 1963 Wrestling Team Golf is a highly individual sport as well as a team sport. The team has won many matches and titles since it started in 1963. Some players have competed in district and state matches.
