Montreat-Anderson College Vol. XII 1984-85 3 We Will Mount Up With Wings Like Eagles . . . M is for the mountains. One can hardly think of Montreat without thinking of the mountains. You have known their beauty in all seasons; you have known their majesty, their awesomeness, their protection. I look to the mountains; where will my help come from? My help will come from the Lord, who made heav- en and earth.” Ps. 121:1-2 And Soar! 2 M-AC Life Faculty Staff — 14 Freshmen — 42 Sports — 62 Events — 96 Sophomores — 52 Dorm Life — 82 o is for obedience. No one can trust God who does not obey God. Obedience is the root of confidence. Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voices of the Lord? Be- hold, to obey is better than sacrifice. I Sam. 15:22 M-AC Life 3 N is for new — new friends, new experiences, new insights, new oppor- tunities. He taught me to sing a new song, a song of praise to our God. Ps. 40:30 4 M-AC Life J. is for training. Montreat-Ander- son sees in each new student the po- tential of a full-blown bloom, the ma- turing of a plant that has reached ma- turity and productiveness. The faculty have been the ones who have carefully and lovingly cultivated the field. Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Con- sider the outcome of their way , and imitate their way.” Heb. 13:7-8 M-AC Life 5 this so that you will stay away from sin. But if you sin, there is someone to plead for you before the Father. His name is Jesus I Jn. 2:1 6 M-AC Life E is for enjoyment. God wants us to be happy, to enjoy life and to enjoy him. Happy is the man who has the God of Jacob to help him and who depends on the Lord his God. Ps. 146:5 M-AC Life 7 8 M-AC Life 1 is for trust. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. These words are good advice for any stage of your life. Take them with you and let them become the corner- stone of your life. He who dwells in the shadow of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, 'My refuge and my for- tress; my God, in whom I trust'. Vaughn (left) is the presi- dent of Montreat-Anderson College. His main duties are those of implementing the policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, and of administering the af- fairs of the college. Half of his time is spent in Montreat, while the other half is spent off-campus raising funds for the college. For years Dr. Vaughn has served Mon- treat-Anderson well. This is almost twice as long as Time magazine indicates most college presidents persevere in their po- sitions! Dr. E. Lee Secrest (bottom left) has served as Dean of Academic Affairs for two years. He is mainly concerned with planning the academic curricula and with faculty development. Says Dr. Secrest, Montreat-Anderson is an outstanding institution, and I'll do my best to make it even better.” Dr. C. Larry Wilson (bottom right) has been Dean” to Montreat students for 20 years. Dean Wilson's duties include su- pervising all student activities, coordi- ating resident life, and discipling students. Dean Wilson says he is very excited about the new student center. He feels it will be a great asset to the college in the oming years. Faculty Staff 17 Administration Dr. Calvin C. Thielman (right) is known as Calvin” to everyone, from the president of the college to the 3-year-old faculty child. He has served as chaplain of Montreat-Anderson for about two decades. Clavin would say his job is to take each student he encounters a step or two toward Christ, in whatever way he can. This may be in directly sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, or helping a student prepare to lead a hall Bible study. Walter Hall (below) plays an important, but uncelebrated, role in the life of Montreat-An- derson College. As the business manager he supervises billing, oversees the repairs in the dorms, and generally keeps the college in the red. Williard Sessler, (lower right) is another un- sung hero of Montreat-Anderson College. His official title is Director of Development- Church Relations. Mr. Sessler keeps the col- lege ideals in mind — and in progress. His job is to keep the college well-endowed financially and with the prayers of support people. 18 Faculty Staff Social And Natural Sciences George Adams Brad Daniel John Davis Lloyd Davis Jane Holt Charles Massey Faculty Staff 19 Humanities Vicki Alvis Jack Crawford Betty Ferrell Rich Gray Patsy Hilliard Don King Elizabeth Maxwell Linda Price Bettie Pritchard Larry Wilson 20 Faculty Staff Athletics Development Group Faculty Staff 21 Academic Dean's Office Student Affairs Staff 22 Faculty Staff Business Office Admissions Staff Library Staff Faculty Staff 23 Registrar's Housekeeping Staff Epicure 24 F culty Staff New Students 25 SNOI1VZIN V 0dO The Best Of Fellowship SGA Every Monday morning at the early hour of 7:15, a group of Montreat-Anderson students known as the Stu- dent Government would gather in the private dining room to pray. They prayed for specific students' needs, concerns of the campus, and the ac- tivities of the upcoming week. This weekly prayer breakfast was one of the many activities that the M-AC Student Government Association sponsored. SGA also organized a blood drive each semester, and a Love Feast which was held December 11. All in all, it was SGA's goal to ad- dress the needs of the students and to look after everyone's well-being. Thanks, SGA! Student Government president Lucy Pasquier All at one time! The many busy students who comprise the SGA. Organizations 2 7 Wilderness And Conservation Wilderness and Conservation is a new group on campus this year. Headed by Ben Fortsen, this club is dedicated to enjoying God's cre- ation and preserving it. With this attitude they participate in various activities such as French Broad Riv- er Clean Up Day and rock-climb- ing — just for fun! The Student Christian Associ- ation is a long-standing organiza- tion. Its leaders are committed to lifting Christ up, and presenting Him to the student body in a clear way. To this and SCA sponsors the Vespers worship time, discipleship groups, outreach ministries and the Student Foreign Missions Fellow- ship. The purpose of the group was to make possible the activi- ties on campus that were not associat- ed with academics. But these, too, were part of our Montreat-Anderson education. Honor Council Honor Council at M- AC is an important part of our lives in the disci- plinary sense. These people are understand- ing but firm students, and their objective opin- ion means alot as they strive to uphold the principles this college deems important for productive lives as Christian students. Phi Theta Kappa's chapter at M-AC is an honorable organization on campus. The excel- lence in academics and overall citizenship these ► members uphold make them an important asset to life on campus. Phi Theta Kappa 30 Alethia Just about every Wednesday afternoon the Alethia staff can be seen hard at work upstairs in the student center. Incidentally, all of their hard work has certainly paid off as we have one of the best newspapers ever. They have even been offered the opportuni- ty to enter the Alethia in an area school newspaper competition. With Mindy May- den as Alethia's able and dedicated editor, our school's source of new and exciting in- formation is a success. Organization 31 Mark Summers. Karen Robertson, Priscilla Maxwell m k: The Handbell Choir was a small group of six people who met every Wednesday morning after chapel. The music they mastered was an inspiration to everyone who heard it. Christmas was a busy time for the ringers as they played in chapel and for churches around the area. Although the group of ringers was small, the ministry to the campus and community was great. From left: Paula Shillinglaw, Pam Taylor, Marcia Bronson, Amy Bowlin, Charles Massey, Nancy Gurley Choir rr£ Handbells The M-AC choir, under the able direction of Mr. Ed Carwithen, was found singing all styles of music throughout the school year. The choir kicked off the year with a weekend re- treat. Later they began to practice for a big night — singing with the Asheville Symphony and other area colleges. They provided some entertainment for Parents' Weekend, and also sponsored a beautiful Madrigal Dinner on De- cember 1. SILAS M. VAUGHN A Word From Anne Cromartie, Assistant Dean Of Students Over the past fourteen years President Vaughn has led Montreat-Anderson College through some critically difficult years. His financial expertise and knowledge about business management have been a great asset to the college. We are grateful for his fund raising ability, his sincere interest in students and his leadership in acquiring our new athletic field and campus center. Dean Wilson Has Word Of Praise For Dr. Vaughn . . . 'A college president has to keep a very busy schedule. President Vaughn does that, but he makes sure there is time for the students. He knows the students, knows where they are from, and in many cases he knows their kinfolks. His concern for the students, his sincere effort to make their experience at Montreat-Anderson College a good and successful one, and his warm and friendly way with people are several of the many fine qualities we admire and appreciate in our President. Calvin Thielman, Long-Time Associate, Says, Those of us who know and love Montreat-Anderson College also know the severe demands that are placed on the president of a smaller church-related school. Administration, fund raising and future-planning all occupy his time and absorb his energy. For almost 14 years Dr. Vaughn has bourne that burden and assumed that task. At Montreat one may see the physical growth in college facilities, but behind the scene is the ever-present task of raising money for buildings, salaries and scholarships. I am glad the editors have dedicated this volume in respect and appreciation for the hard work President Vaughn has done and continues to do in making Montreat-Anderson a growing Christian college. Dr. E. Lee Secrest . . . Academic Dean, Says Of Vaughn: Montreat-Anderson College is most fortunate to have the productive Christian leadership of President Silas M. Vaughn. During his 13-plus years here he has demonstrated a genuine love for the college and has utilized his significant experience and knowledge to improve all areas of our school. He has a personal interest in every student, faculty member and administrator, and works constantly to improve the effectiveness of all college programs. Dedication 99 Etc 103 If you could only know of all the hard work and long hours that so many people have contributed to the making of this year's Agape, you would certainly appreciate the meaning of this special book. I would like to offer a very warm and heart-felt Thank-you to the following people whose dedication and patience have made the Agape come to life. To the staff .. . please always remember that I didn't sleep through another meeting (how could I when you guys would never let me forget about that!) Thank-you so much for the many extra hours you gave to the staff. I say this with all of the honesty I have inside my weary body . .. this book would never have made it to the press without you. I am forever grateful. To Mrs. A .. . Thanks for all your help in keeping me oragnized. You are an incredible lady. To Richard and Lanon ... Thank-you for allowing me to take so much of your time with Mama. I doubt the apartment will ever be the same. To President and Mrs. Vaughn . .. Thank-you for your contribution of the Montreat prose in the first section. And for your cooperation, Mrs. Vaughn, with the Dedication page. I hope you are pleased. To Portia ... I can't believe its finally over. We did it!! I'll never forget the time we have spent together working on yearbook and talking about guys. Those times are special to me. Thanks for having faith in me. Also, your artwork is incredible. Absoultely incredible. And last of all. Thanks to my very best friends; Jennifer, Missy, Mary John, Emily, Punkin', and Dori, (otherwise known as the Six Pack and various other variations) ... for all the times I had to say, I can't go. I have Yearbook. , for being patient with me, and for all of your expert advice about what should go in and what should be left out. You guys made this book worth the time. I pray that this Yearbook will be as special to the entire student body as it is to me, and I hope that the pictures and activities shown on these few pages will forever bring back good memories of the times we have all spent together.
