AGAPE 1977 MONTREAT-ANDERSON COLLEGE MONTREAT, NORTH CAROLINA WE ARE ONE IN THE SPIRIT, WE ARE ONE IN THE LORD . . . 3 AND WE PRAY THAT ALL UNITY MAY ONE DAY BE RESTORED . . . 4 AND THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS BY OUR LOVE . . . 6 7 DEDICATION We, the Annual Staff, are honored to dedicate Agape 77 to Jose Antonio Reyes, for his dedication to Montreat-Anderson College. Senor Reyes teaches Spanish and has received a B. A. , M. A. , and Ph. D., from the University of Havana with addtitional study at Barry College of Miami. We are truly thankful for the Love he has shown us. f Senor Reyes was born on March 3, 1909, in Caibarien, Cuba. He worked from 1961 to 1966 in Miami, Fla. among Cuban refugees and since 1966 as a Spanish teacher at MAC. He was married in 1944 and has one daughter. 10 I can't think of anyplace where the proof of God’s existence is more evident than in the lives of the students and fa- culty here at Montreat. There is no need to play games with any- one here; you can be yourself. I love it! G. Michael Davis e a u r e s 11 BROOKE PARRIOTT HOMECOMING QUEEN I am from North Augus- ta, South Carolina and was chosen Maid of Honor last year. I'm interested in becom- ing a Christian counselor and feel a special need in being with people. Since I've been in Mon- treat, I have grown to love being in the mountains. I've found a joy in square dancing and outdoor sports. My long term accom- plishment is hope that God can use me to further his Kingdom. The thing that I'll re- member the most about Montreat is the friendships and unity I've experienced. It is the warmest, most special kind of love I've ever known. Brooke Parriott 12 i v DEBBIE SCHAFER MAID-OF-HONOR Hi. I now reside in Fairfax, Virginia, and I was a cheerleader at Radford High School in Hawaii during my junior year. Now, I plan to continue in a Christian college and major in the field of Botany. Since I’ve become a Christian my goals have changed. I mean to serve God as much as I can. I feel that Mon treat is most unique in the Christian fellowship experienced be- tween student and teacher. In High School it was unheard of to hug your friends, but here it is a sign of love and caring for one another. Debbie Schafer 13 HOMECOMING 1976 Homecoming '76 was a big success. The theme this year was Stairway to Heaven. The Band play- ing was Sweet Tooth from Atlanta, Georgia. It was a night worth remembering for all who came. 14 The Homecoming Court and their escorts: Willis Dowling and Debbie Schafer, Brooke Parriott and Steve Wolfenden, Van Kornegay and Carol Rajib, Stan Gaines and Beth Cooke, Moi Monroe and Mary Sue Van- overloop, and Tom Down and Diane Wads- worth. r 15 FALL THE FALL FESTIVAL OF FAITH But the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy. Genesis 39:21 MAC was honored Oct. 3-8 to have Luis Palau as a guest speaker. Many hours of prayer went into the preparation for the Fall Festival of Faith. This shows what God can do when His people humble themselves and pray. He spoke on the life and character of Joseph. There were rap sessions and counseling which resulted in changed lives. Gale Tysor CHRISTMAS This Christmas season Montreat- Anderson College introduced a new Christmas Banquet as well as the an- nual dance. The Banquet, sponsored by SCA, was held at the S W Cafeteria in Asheville and Mr. Walter Jackson was the guest speaker. The dance was held at the Convocation Hall and the music was provided by Choice. AT MONTREAT 9 20 21 STREET DANCE 23 w H O ’S Donald Edward Holcombe He is from Asheville, N. C. And still no prize—What did I do it for anyway? Certainly there is no glory in defeat—or-- am I measuring success by win-loss records, gilded trophies, and the praises of men? When your Son hung on the cross, it looked as if He had Lost. But He won a far greater prize--He gave us forgiveness and eternal life ! Maybe this year can be measured by intangible sucesses: --the friendship of the others on the team —feeling good about doing something right once in time —representing a small college tucked back in the mountains where people really Love each other --feeling the exhuberance of making my body work to its Limits and then going beyond them, --and then -1 got to know you better, Lord. We learned to be win- ners, despite the score of the game and that nothing is ac- complished without the backing of the Lord. Moi Monroe Playing Soccer was great, the guys were determined, the coach was funny, and it took Christ to bring it all to life. John Mack 37 8 I • Playing Soccer this year at Montreat was a spiritual as well as a growing experience. The friendships made dur- ing the season have really blessed my Freshman year at Montreat. Rex Hoffman The understanding of what team uni- ty is, is the main thing I've gained. The knowledge of how to get along with others and to reach one goal. They have been to the finals more than any other college in our district. 49 Baseball and the people at Mon treat have really showed Me hap- piness and responsibility. Also being here has brought me closer to the Lord. It has helped me take a big step in my life, and I'm thankful for it. So often we seek to be less than what God would have us to be, be- cause we are afraid we won't be accepted. That is not so at Montreat, we have found our freedom in Christ, we are discovering that our Lord has made us different to ful- fill his purposes, and were not afraid any longer. We feel secure in his love. The one thing that makes Montreat so special is the love we have one for another through Jesus. Don Holcombe Friend- ship is know- ing someone is always there, and it is something you cannot do without. Judy Anderson r in It is hard to comprehend even at a school this small such a menagerie of people might live together in the bonds of peace and brotherhood. It is only in the pre- text of the Love of Christ and the unity of His body that all differ- ences and be overlooked. Mark Robinson Friendship is -- being able to feel at ease with strangers and to know there is another place to turn to that is the next best place to home. Gary Bouknight- 114 As we look at the friends we make at Montreat we see a bond that will be strong in our lives forever. We see our friends as people who care about us and will listen to the things we say. As we notice this concern of friends we will forever be grate- ful for our years at Montreat. --Chris Lautz-- 115 116 t Arriving at Montreat-Anderson in Jan- uary of this year it became apparent al- most immediately that I had come to a very special place. The sense of commu- nity and of personal Christian committ- ment which was communicated to me con- sistently in those first few days and every day since is rare and very valuable. The geniune joy and warmth in; the greetings of students to me and to one another was a delight to watch. Love and unity are the greatest qualities in Montreat. Barbara Hersey, History I r 119 . . .
