INTRODUCTION Generations of students come a id go and to them, it must seem that professors go on forever. But time catches up even with those who deal in timeless truths. The sixth decade eventually rolls around and with it comes the year which is marked for Miss Margaret Smith Professor of Mathematics Few of the present student body are aware that before Miss Smith took up the teaching of mathematics she had earned renown throughout the Carolinas for the quality of her instruction in Physical Education. Her efficient direction of the P. E. Department at Montreat earned the respect and loyalty of successive classes of women who attended what was then a Senior College. Those students learned about principles of conduct as well as the necessity for top performance in their P. E. work. The May Day Pageants elaborately planned and meticulously executed under Miss Smith's direction drew admiring spectators from far afield. A Montreat tradition established by Miss Smith was the annual college hike up Mount Mitchell, usually held around the middle of October. Students had to qualify to be allowed to make the hike, and the outing, whether on foot or in some kind of conveyance, was a high point of the first semester activities. Miss Margaret Smith has already had one year book dedicated to her by grateful students. In this edition of the Sun Dial, we wish to acknowledge with graditude her years of faithful service and extend our best wishes for many happy years of retirement.

retirement. In May, 1970, two faculty members will retire from the positions they at present occupy. They are Miss Margaret Smith, Professor of Mathematics, and Mr. Howard Kester, Dean of Students. Donald Mitchell As both teacher and Dean of Students, Mr. Kester has given decisive shape to the traditions of Montreat Anderson College. Always a great believer in student government, Mr. Kester championed its extension in the college, and never ceased to remind more hasty colleagues of the need for patience and confidence as students took increasing responsibility for their own affairs. When the Honor Court was established, Mr. Kester was the obvious choice for the male faculty representative. He has been with the Court ever since, assisting it to establish just procedures and nurturing the judicial process out of a great fund of wisdom and experience. Scores of students over the years have been helped by Mr. Kester's counselling. He confronted issues directly and pointed the way to responsibility and self-respect. Students have always found him to be a most compassionate man. Those few who mistook gentleness for weakness were quickly exposed to a righteous wrath. Mr. Kester will be greatly missed as a Dean. He will continue for at least one more year, however, as a professor of sociology and economics. Students yet to come to Montreat will still have a chance to sit in his class. They are fortunate because that is one of the most enriching experiences this college offers. Mr. Howard Kester Dean of Students D. Mitchell
