57 '1 3 SUNDIAL 1969-1970 Montreat-Anderson College INTRODUCTION Generations of students come a id go and to them, it must seem that professors go on forever. But time catches up even with those who deal in timeless truths. The sixth decade eventually rolls around and with it comes the year which is marked for Miss Margaret Smith Professor of Mathematics Few of the present student body are aware that before Miss Smith took up the teaching of mathematics she had earned renown throughout the Carolinas for the quality of her instruction in Physical Education. Her efficient direction of the P. E. Department at Montreat earned the respect and loyalty of successive classes of women who attended what was then a Senior College. Those students learned about principles of conduct as well as the necessity for top performance in their P. E. work. The May Day Pageants elaborately planned and meticulously executed under Miss Smith's direction drew admiring spectators from far afield. A Montreat tradition established by Miss Smith was the annual college hike up Mount Mitchell, usually held around the middle of October. Students had to qualify to be allowed to make the hike, and the outing, whether on foot or in some kind of conveyance, was a high point of the first semester activities. Miss Margaret Smith has already had one year book dedicated to her by grateful students. In this edition of the Sun Dial, we wish to acknowledge with graditude her years of faithful service and extend our best wishes for many happy years of retirement. retirement. In May, 1970, two faculty members will retire from the positions they at present occupy. They are Miss Margaret Smith, Professor of Mathematics, and Mr. Howard Kester, Dean of Students. Donald Mitchell As both teacher and Dean of Students, Mr. Kester has given decisive shape to the traditions of Montreat Anderson College. Always a great believer in student government, Mr. Kester championed its extension in the college, and never ceased to remind more hasty colleagues of the need for patience and confidence as students took increasing responsibility for their own affairs. When the Honor Court was established, Mr. Kester was the obvious choice for the male faculty representative. He has been with the Court ever since, assisting it to establish just procedures and nurturing the judicial process out of a great fund of wisdom and experience. Scores of students over the years have been helped by Mr. Kester's counselling. He confronted issues directly and pointed the way to responsibility and self-respect. Students have always found him to be a most compassionate man. Those few who mistook gentleness for weakness were quickly exposed to a righteous wrath. Mr. Kester will be greatly missed as a Dean. He will continue for at least one more year, however, as a professor of sociology and economics. Students yet to come to Montreat will still have a chance to sit in his class. They are fortunate because that is one of the most enriching experiences this college offers. Mr. Howard Kester Dean of Students D. Mitchell “Human faculties are common but that which converges these faculties into my identity, separates me from every other man. That other man cannot think my thoughts, speak my words, do my works. He cannot have my sins and I cannot have his virtues G i es 0 2 Bert Adamson Mauldin, S. C. Ric Amme Virginia Beach, Va. College Union Activities Board Joe Morrison President, Freshman Class Emerson once said that the world exists for the education of each man. One person, one creed, one group cannot have all the answers. What has been compiled into formulas and rules must be discovered over and over again by individuals searching for themselves. Everything that is, or will ever be, has always been. Man is merely discovering or rediscovering. But if he ever stops searching, all is lost. The world is a thousand educations to a thousand searchers. We need them all to keep the balance. And in that balance there is unity, so many different, yet so alive. When we realize the importance of the other person to our own education we shall find something on which to begin building instead of hunting ways to be destructive. JUST AROUND FALL Montreat-Anderson Conservation Club—1970 Formed in January 1965 the Montreat Anderson Conservation Club is dedicated to the preservation, protection and development of all the area's natural resources through study, participation, special projects, and personal application of sound conservation and sportsmanship practices. It's express purpose is to enjoy to the fullest the natural resources of streams and woodlands and wildlife in Montreat and the surrounding area and its aims are doing something about these resources in terms of preservation and development. The Club has an annual membership of from fifty to one hundred students, both men and women and features annual turkey shoots, fish stocking, conservation programs both in action through work projects and in educational programs through films and outside speakers from state and government agencies in conservation. It maintains four fully organised and equipped firefighting crews each with a crew chief and twice each year undergoes firefight training directed by the U. S. Forest Service and the N. C. Forest Service. The club in 1970 has made outstanding gains in stimulating a campus-wide clean up program endeavoring to enlist the participation of all the students in cleaning up the surrounding areas near their dormitories as well as planting trees, shrubs, bushes, flowers, grass, and making the entire campus a more beautiful place in which to live. The club's sponsor is Mr. E. A. Andrews. Vice President of the Mountain Retreat Association. The conservation club has sponsored bear hunts, turkey shoots, jeep riding and a campus clean up under the guidance of Uncle Andy Andrews. Society has placer strong demands on the individual — society seemingly has difficulty sometimes in being able to judge the true worth of a MAN society seems to be concerned with how much money a man is worth. Society is concerned with the vocation of a man-white collar or blue collar. Society is interested in end results, perhaps the end justifies the means. Society says, From which side of the tracks do you come?” Society acts as if it doesn't matter what color you are if you are white. Society asks. Did you win or did you lose? How you played the game doesn't seem to appear in society's picutre now. And all of us somewhere along the line are guilty as part of society. We hear from our society the vocal minority, but where do we find the silent majority? Where do we find the silent majority? Where do you stand or where are you willing to stand? When will your silence cease? When will you stand upl Don't wait too long or it may be too late. Outmanned, but undaunted, little men in comparative stature, our Montreat basketball boys have not won according to society's standards, at least not often. When teams as mismatched in size and ability many problems arise which would not ordinarily do so. How these problems are faced, how individuals respond - these are what go into the makings of a man. When one battles under the boards against tremendous odds and takes a physical beating, but still comes back with his best effort, then you see intestinal fortitude. When you see 100% and 125% efforts, what more do you ask? When our boys will go out to represent Montreat against the odds, it should be comparatively simple for faculty, administration, and students to give some positive support and lay off negativism. Well, the season’s over. We lost, but who is the real loser? I contend our little men were big men, and I for one am pleased and proud. Proud to see you master yourself, improve your ability, develop as individuals and as a team, proud to see you realize your own potential. Thank you men. Carolyn Bartlett U - V.
