Where Swannanoa’s waters rise In vales like unto Paradise, Our fathers here began to raise Their notes of Calvinistic praise. Like Abraham, they dwelt in tents Till more substantial tenements Could be constructed on these slopes, Symbolic of securer hopes. For long the old Montreat Hotel Had served its generation well, Affording shelter from the storm And rest for all the travel worn. The Alba, now, in proper white Rose on an advantageous site Above the Lake, well fit to be A house of hospitality. A meeting hall, with roof of tin, Shut out the rain but not the din And frequent speakers of renown Stood helpless as the floods came down.

eari A power plant, hard by the stream, Was moved by swiftly coursing steam, And as each mountain day was done The dynamo began its run; That divers lights might brightly glow In sundry homes, set high and low, As though to demonstrate that light Fells all the darkness of the night. In early days the baseball field Did countless classic contests yield; But now, Alas! how sad but true, Tis but a softball rendezvous. At length there came the days of stone With buildings wrought in grayish tone, Set to endure through times to be With lines in sturdy symmetry. And there are cherished memories, too, Down through the years of those we knew. Now far translated out the pale Of time and tide and things that fail, Beyond these hills of which we sing Into the presence of the King. On Saturday, the Lake aroimd, Aspiring swimmers could be found, While parents fond were there to see Their sons perform aquatic’ly. Past fifty years Montreat remains, Despite the touch of tireless change; And may five further decades find Her strong in purpose, soul, and mind
