The Sun Dial 1960 The Sun Dial 1960 Presented by The Sun Dial Stall, MONTREAT-ANDERSON COLLEGE, MONTREAT, N. C. The Past The Present The Future £ ✓ QyLUu Ml JL ma How dear to our hearts tvill the memory be of the days we have spent in thy care, When within thy dear halls we have lingered awhile All thy gifts and thy blessings to share. Then, to thee, Alma Mater, we'll ever be true, Though the coming years scatter us far; And the ideals you taught us will ever be bright Shining out as our life's guiding star. So the memory of thee will ever remain. While we think of each dear hallowed scene; And the bonds of true loyalty, blest through the years. Our affections will ever keep green. We will cherish thy name wherever we roam. And forever thy praises repeat. Hail to thee, Alma Mater, our happiest days Are the days we have spent in Montreat. The Past We Dedicate To Mrs. R. C. Anderson Whose love for Montreat has been shown in her actions. Whose love for God has been shown in her life. Whose place in the heart of Montreat has a permanent position. To You, We of the Sun Dial Staff dedicate the Past of Montreat and of the 1960 Sun Dial. on treat When Roosevelt the First held sway From Plymouth Rock to Frisco Bay, When autos all were cranked by hand And fears of panic swept the land. Where Swannanoa’s waters rise In vales like unto Paradise, Our fathers here began to raise Their notes of Calvinistic praise. Like Abraham, they dwelt in tents Till more substantial tenements Could be constructed on these slopes, Symbolic of securer hopes. For long the old Montreat Hotel Had served its generation well, Affording shelter from the storm And rest for all the travel worn. The Alba, now, in proper white Rose on an advantageous site Above the Lake, well fit to be A house of hospitality. A meeting hall, with roof of tin, Shut out the rain but not the din And frequent speakers of renown Stood helpless as the floods came down. eari A power plant, hard by the stream, Was moved by swiftly coursing steam, And as each mountain day was done The dynamo began its run; That divers lights might brightly glow In sundry homes, set high and low, As though to demonstrate that light Fells all the darkness of the night. In early days the baseball field Did countless classic contests yield; But now, Alas! how sad but true, Tis but a softball rendezvous. At length there came the days of stone With buildings wrought in grayish tone, Set to endure through times to be With lines in sturdy symmetry. And there are cherished memories, too, Down through the years of those we knew. Now far translated out the pale Of time and tide and things that fail, Beyond these hills of which we sing Into the presence of the King. On Saturday, the Lake aroimd, Aspiring swimmers could be found, While parents fond were there to see Their sons perform aquatic’ly. Past fifty years Montreat remains, Despite the touch of tireless change; And may five further decades find Her strong in purpose, soul, and mind Jtt iU enutriam NANCY GAY ROBERTSON November 8, 1941 - May 15. 1960 “Life on earth is but a loan” How fortunate were we to share the presence of one who filled our days with sunshine, joy, and happiness. Her laughing eyes, her smiling face, her many pleasant ways, her willingness to serve with her hands or heart will live ever in the memories of her friends and classmates. “Our loss, Heaven s gain. The Present We Dedicate To Miss Evelyn Morris A Teacher to us stimulating, effective and natural in presentation without affection, pretense or assumption . . . A Lady whom we see as modest, generous, and incapable of inferior thoughts, always helpful, sincere and kind, exemplifying courage and spirit . . . A Christian having shown herself to be simple in faith exemplifying in life and willing in service to God and man . . . To You, we of the Sun Dial Staff dedicate the Present of Montreat and of the 1960 Sun Dial. HOWERTON TOWN AND COUNTRY f'?; ASSEMBLY INN SNOW COVERED WALKWAY PRAYER ROOM Administration Dr. C. Grier Davis President of Montreat Anderson College Montreat, N. C. Dear Dr. Davis: In one of the messages which you gave to the students and faculty in our chapel services you spoke on pride. We have not forgotten what you said; however, there is one phase of our pride which we are proud to have. That is the feeling each of us has in knowing you and having you for our president. Speaking for each member of the student body, may I say that this warm feeling did not come by comparing you with someone else. Rather, this sense of pride has been gained by seeing and knowing you and by realizing the principles which you believe and for which you stand. Some of us will leave and go to another school or to a job at the close of this year. Others will have the priviledge of staying here and working with you next year. But I am sure that neither distance nor time will crowd out the warm spot in our hearts for OUR PRESIDENT, DR. DAVIS. Yours most sincerely, R. Glenn Camp, President Student Government Association The Future We Dedicate To Dr. Grier Davis One whose dignity is respectful. One whose inner peace is admirable, One whose presence is encouraging. One whose service to Montreat has already been invaluable. To You, We of the Sun Dial Staff dedicate the Future of Montreal and of the 1960 Sun Dial. Our Juture 'Montrealers 1. They’re Cute. 2.
