Foreword When a girl comes to Montreat, she comes TO create. She has in her heart a picture of the girl she wants to be, outlined, like a pattern on a piece of needlepoint. But she must fill in the design with choice colors and certain weights of thread which she finds only here. She brings with her the background material—character interwoven with dreams—into which she will work her design of the years. Although all are offered the same variety of materials with which to work, each gJrPs design will be unique. It is the selection of colors and the skill in blending them that makes a design distinctive. ZL 1954 2 1. 7582 SUN DIAL 3 DEDICATION Because her gentleness and her humor have shortened long hours for us . . . Because she teaches us the beauty of service in a simple life . . . Because we feel she knows we love her more than it is possible to say here . . . We dedicate the 1954 Sun Dial to Wu,nu 4 In Loving Memory • • • DR. CLASS OF '54 In the fall of 1950, when we met for our first class meeting, one could not have guessed the many talents and individual capacities in the group. Nor could one have imagined how well those individual qualities would blend into our group activities. Hut it was our teamwork, our class spirit, for which we were known, and which caused others to look forward to our undertakings. People always expected “the unusual” from our class—they were never disappointed. Now, as we look back over our college days, we realize that we as a class have learned a great lesson, that, as Kipling puts it, “It is not the work of one man that brings us to our goal; It is the everlasting teamwork of every bloomin’ soul.” 20 VIRGINIA BLACKBURN Bible duel Religions Educatum Ginnv . . . hillbilly . . .
