(36) Yi ]aij 2)ay 93 9 The traditional May Day celebration was patterned after the ancient Greek Festivals, where contests and games were dedicated to a god or goddess. So the Montreat Festival was dedica- ted to the Goddess of Beauty, the Queen, who with her court reigned over the feats. The pag- eant opened with the Sacrificial Dance by the priestesses. Apollo, the God of Beauty, in a chario: drawn by four horses, danced to show his devotion. Athletes, tumblers, warriors, and soldiers displayed their ability and achievements before the Queen. To close the first phase of the festival, the treasure bearers crowned each victor v ith a laurel wreath. The second phase was a series of dances by the maidens in honor of the victors - The Frolic”, Springtime in Hel- las , Waltz Study and The Seasons”.
