All three of the children take the situa- tion into their own hands and each sends Mrs. Maxwell flowers with Mr. Mgixwell's name and a suitalwle verse. Mrs. Maxwell receives some flowers lrom a Dr. Gooch. who turns out to be Gladys Gooch, Ll former college roommate of hers. The children think she is going to dinners rind shows with a man, hut it really is Dr. Gooch XVhen everything is finally straightened out. A contest for scholarships in music is .held in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Meadows, prosperous and respected farmers. Sue wishes to take part, but Mrs. Scroggs, her foster mother, refuses to allow it, saying she hasnt the proper cl mthes. and besides there are dishes to be washed. The sympathetic Barbara takes Sue under her wing and outfits her in thc latest fashion. Sue sings her solo and is immediately awarded the prize, She wins Bob Colemens heart, but refuses to listen to him, for she thinks he is lust feeling sorry for her because of her poverty and misfortune Unly if she were wealthy and independent would shc- be willing to consider him. The Constable discovers a box containing a deed in Sue-'s name to a lot in Los Angeles, which proves of great value.
