James Whitcomb Riley 1849-1916 James Whitcomb Riley was undoubtedly the most popular American poet of the end of the nineteenth century. He was the poet of the children and of simple sentiment, and he immortalized the rural dialect of his state. Riley was born in Greenfield, Indiana, and always made his home in or near Indianapolis. Some of his best known poems are When the Frost is On the Punkin , The Old Man and Jim , Out to Old Aunt Mary ' s , The Old Swimmin ' Hole , The Raggedy Man , and Little Orphant Annie .
