The palh led up a mounlain side, Sfeep and sharp wifh crevices wide. Al' fhe fool of lhe mounfain a parly slood Viewing lhe road as well as fhey could. Then wifhoul lighf excepl lhe flares, The band moved onward under fhe glares. Their noslrils burned wifh smoke and flame: Slill fhey pushed ahead, feeling fired buf game. Then, lhrough fhe heavy dusf and lead. They saw a figure iusf ahead. A lilfle old man wilh bearded face: And, as he saw fhem from his place, l-le raised a gnarled hand and molioned fhem on: Buf when lhe group looked anew, lhe liny man gone. If was Courage... Courage lhey look, and on lhey sped, Trying vainly fo gel' ahead. On and on: lhe smoke grew dense: The cavalcade was in suspense. The wind rushed by: lheir faces were worn: Their clolhes were drab, faflered, and forn. Then, from behind a boulder near, A sweel, genfle voice filled lhe air: Come on, come on, 'rhe goal is near by! They prayed, wilh haggard faces lo lhe sky. Failh was af fheir side . . . Faifh lhey look, and made if pay: Almighly God had heard lhem pray. WGS Allhough lhe baffle confinued above, The finy group fou-ghf for Peace and Love. Rockefs wilh lheir bursling flare Senl lheir slreamers fhrough lhe air. The smoke was slowly fading away: Failh wifh Forfifude had come lo sfay. A young halberdier lhen did appear Assuring lhem lhaf fhere was no fear For Valour . . . Wifh Valour and Failh and Courage, loo, The smoke disappeared from lhe heavens blue. The sun broke fhrough clouded sky: Valkyrie was seen riding on high. Wirh buf a shorl dislance leff lo go, The group was crawling lo reach lhe goal. A sofl, while cloud obscured fheir view. On il' saf a slern old sainl who Was clad in silky garmenfs whife: l-lis head was encircled by coruscaling lighf. l-le hovered over fhe liny group: l-le carried a book and a golden sloup. Men, his feeble voice called forlh, Though you are sel on lhis rich reward, Do nof worry or squander your heallh: Over yon hill lies all lhis weallh. The group looked up wifh longing eyes, And lisfened .fo his words so wise. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF '46 We slarled our high school career in I943 mid a war-lorn world, wilh sixly-seven lreshies bravely lrying lo do lheir parl lo help win lhe war. Our years in high school were lhe war years, and many changes were made in lhe curriculum and lhe aclivilies program because ol lhe war. In our Freshman year physical lilness became a regular parl ol lhe program. Thal year we chose as our leaders Daniel Sl. John, presidenl: Pal Pugh, vice-presidenl: Avis Brown, secrelary-lreasurer: Margarel Schwarzlcopl, girl adviser: Max Bedwell, boy adviser. Miss Shaclday and Mr. Craig were our morale builders. Belly Denlon, Belly Racer, Roberl Merchanl, Lillian Case, and June Moore enlered during lhe year. Virginia and Mary Ramseyer. Belly Denlon, and lone Johnson wilhdrew. We held a slcaling parly in lhe early spring al Lalce Blue Waler. In l944 Miss Morlon and Mr. McBride guided us lhrough one more war year. During lhis year sludenls and leachers helped oul in lhe ralioning program, and a movie proieclor was added lo lhe school's equiprnenl. Ollicers lor lhe year were: presidenl, Tom McKean: vice-presidenl, Bob Simmons: secrelary-lreasurer, Wanda Banlz: girl adviser, Belly Racer: and boy adviser, Bob Wagner. A baclcward parly was held December 6 al lhe high school. Keilh Wible, Junior Jesler, and Wallis Orl enlered during lhe year. Leo Jellries, Richard Freeman, Phyllis Fear, and Junior Jordan wilhdrew. Our biggesl year so lar was I945. We were big shol juniors lhen. Aeronaulics was added lo lhe curriculum. and malhemalics was slressed more lhan belore. Clyde Nell was elecled presidenl ol lhe class lor lhe year. Olher ollicers were Avis Brown, vice-presidenl: Erla Ely, secrelary-lreasurer: and Helen Cline and Keilh Wible, ad- visers. Mary Ramseyer re-enlered lhe class, and Bob Combs, Cecil Oswall, Nellie Norlon, Paul Kershner, and Geraldine and Kennelh Pelerson wilhdrew. Miss Nelson and Mr. Wilson, our sponsors, helped us pul over everylhing we allempled. Under lheir direclion we had a magazine subscriplion drive, purchased our class rings, held lwo parlies, gave a convocalion, and, wilh lhe assislance ol Miss Waller, presenled as our class play Enler Angela. Our class was lhe lirsl lo decide lo hold a prom wilh lhe annual banquel lo honor lhe seniors. Everyone was lhrilled al lhe prospecl ol having a dance and worlced exlra hard lo pul lhe idea across. We used a Weslern lheme. The allair was a lremendous success, and everyone had a good lime, including lhe leachers. Peace came al lasl, and I946 was our biggesl and besl year. Ollicers lor lhe year were presidenl, Belly Lee: vice-presidenl, Jesse Rains: secrelary-lreasurer, Erla Ely: girl adviser, Palricia Pugh: and boy adviser, Bill Srnilh. Mr. Morgan and Miss Alberlson were our sponsors. The annual subscriplion drive slarled lhe year righl. The Blues won, and were lrealed lo a parly. January 3, by lhe Golds. Early in Oclober we sponsored The Down Homers. The senior class play, Girl Shy, was a greal success. Junior-Senior was a gala allair. The Ball Slale orcheslra played lor lhe dance held aller a wonderlul banquel. Reverend Vernon was our speaker al Baccalaureale. We were honored al Commencemenl by having Dr. William P. Deering speak lo us., Aller Commencemenl many ol us began lo leel ralher depressed. Allhough we had looked lorward lo gradualion lor a long lime, now lhal we had really been gradualed, we began lo wish lhal we could have al leasl one more year al good old M.H.S. The Alumni Banquel reslored our good spirils, however, and made us members ol an organizalion which meels every' year lo renew old lriendships and revive memories ol our high school days.
