M H S PIONEERS In the month of September 1939 a group of slxty elght p1oneers landed on the rocky shores of Montpelier High School Eager to begln their new dutxes they chose Peggy Stewart as leader Mar garet Schm1dt as ass1 tant leader B111 Flsher as recorder and treasurer and Gean Walker and B1ll Cook as members of the town counc1l Mr Cralg and MISS Shadday were the elders of the group and furmshed much helpful adV1C8 During the year b1tter weather disease and starvatmn took the1r toll of our group Peggy Stew art our leader her fun loving brother Bill Richard Honn Eldon Ickes Frank Garrison and Bev erly Brown were all mlssmg at the beg1nn1ng of the next year But we ga1ned a very versatile c1t1zen when Peggy ODonnell moved here from Aurora At the begmnrng of the second year September 1940 everyone was a l1ttle less dubious about their ta ks and began to work 1ndustr1ously Fr1endsh1ps developed and soc1al act1v1t1es were conducted A SOC1a1 meetmg was held in the Town Hall November 8 A group of amateur actors presented an lntere t1ng playlet Sauce for the Gosling 1n the commun1ty play house We had another elect1on of town officers at the beg1nn1ng of this year Follow1ng are the officials Eugene Barrett mayor Ray Bell town cr1er Charles Reff recorder and treasurer and Thanna mae Ford and B111 Cook council members Mr Cantwell and Miss Morton were the elders Robert John onbaugh Eugene Roberts and John McCleary moved away durlng th1s year Mary Jo Buckley Betty Schm1dt Dorothy Largent and Mary Jean Love Jolned our communlty By September 1941 our l1ttle group of ploneers had dwindled to fifty three in number We had become accustomed to our new dwellmg and had begun to love It and work for 1tS best interests The oflic1als for th1S year were as follows George Greer moderator B111 Fisher asslstant modera tor Joan Wilson recorder and treasurer Betty Schm1dt and Ray Bell councll members The elders were Dame Nelson and Pop Wrlson In November rings were purchased as an annrversary present IH commemorat1on of our third year 1n thlS terrltory In May we entertained the older members of the communlty at a banquet The basement of the church was decorated in our country s color red white and blue George Greer moved into our thrrvlng l1ttle group from another of our colon1es New York Dur mg th1s year we lost Dorothy Largent Delores Johnson Ellen Jones and Mary Jean Love Our group weathered the C1V11 War the First World War and the Depression bravely and we were proud to come 1nto the last period of our history w1th our colors t1llfly1ng over M H S The end of th1s group s h1story came in the year 1942 Our capable leaders this year were Eugene Barrett president Margaret Turner vice presldent B111 Fisher secretary treasurer C e c1l Schwarzkopf and Anna Rose Gib on council members Mr Morgan and Miss Albertson were our advisers Clarence Murphy entered from Roll at the begmnlng of the year and Betty Denton w1th drew The group presented 1ts final class play on May 1 The succeeding leaders entertamed us at a banquet in May At the begmmng of the year lt was doubtful whether our group could publish the chronicle The Indianran due to the mcrease 1n the cost of material But we rolled up our sleeves grltted our teeth and determined that we would not be the first to d1scont1nue th1S old custom We secured enough subscrlptlon and after addlng to our fund by paper campaigns and other money makmg schemes our budget finally balanced Now on May 22 we leave to Joln the ranks of our forefather to try to find our niche 1n a larger part of the world and in every possible way to further the work of our country for Uncle Sam In your hands IS left the task of leadlng th1s partlcular l1ttle group in 1ts work and keeplng its name travellng through the pages of h1story I O C 1 Y - , I I ' 1 . . 1 I ' C .
