DEDICATION This yearbook is dedicated to a person who has truly shown what determination, willpower and cour- age can achieve. His ever-present smile and positive attitude give each and every one of us the strength to face our daily life with optimism. We have been fortunate to share our school years with such a person. With a feeling of warmth, friend- ship, and pride that this year we have chosen to break with tradi- tion, and in so doing, we honor one of our classmates. It is, therefore, with a great sense of appreciation for all he has given and for all he represents that we dedicate the 1985 yearbook to our friend and classmate, John McArdle. 6 FRESH FACULTY FACES Kathenne Bourne, Chorus and Band Director Jane Youngbear. How will these fashions ap- pear to your children in 2005 or to your grandchildren in 2025? REVENGE OF THE SENIORS! Going along with an annual tradition, the Seniors initiated the Freshmen. This was done to “wel- come” them to the school. The class of '85 came up with some good ideas on how to initiate the class of '88! They were forced to learn the school song, and sing it while marching up and down the halls of the school. Joey Wood dressed to kill! Wait ’til it’s our turn! But, as you leave this school and step out into the real, unshel- tered world, you will encounter many experiences for which you were not prepared in the classroom. Your participation in co-curricular activities may have given you some prac- tice in dealing with these things, but your basic tools of survival remain your own intellect, common sense, and love for your fellow human beings In looking ahead, remain positive. You are capable of achieving whatever you set your sights on, so aim high. Be sure that the mark you make on the world is one that you and your loved ones can look at with pride. Victor Pepin The Solon’s football team headed by co-captains Mitch Gowans and Tom Murray, had a tough season in their last year as a Division I team. The Solons, under head coach Burt Morrison, back from a year’s leave of absence, played against teams from larger schools with much greater reservoirs of manpow- er on the sidelines. The Solons played as hard as possible against over-whelming odds in nearly every game. The cour- age and determination of all the players on the team at each outing is to be com- mended. Every opposing team knew they had played a formidable foe following each game. A strong senior contingent fol- lowed our two captains and led the team. They leave a young, but promising junior squad behind for next year. The graduating seniors are: Running backs Trevor Lacha- pelle, Mark Premo, Ed Rice, and Rob Babcock; Quarter backs Dan Aja and Mike Whit- ney; Ends Mitch Gowans, Pat McGinley and Victor Pepin; Tackle Heinrich Farnham, Guards Tom Murray and Chris Garcia, and Center Jerry Bear” Fitzgerald. Coach Ceppetelli This year was the first year that the freshmen and sophomores played together on the J.V. team. In the past there was a separate team just for freshman. The combined team worked out very well. The sophomores, who had one year more of experience, helped the freshmen understand the plays and rules of the game while showing them the ropes. The season ended with a record of three wins and six loses. Despite what the record may show, the team showed a lot of talent and per- severance. No matter how bad things got, they never once threw in the towel and gave up. The cap- tains, Bill Bruzzese, Bill Fitzgerald, and Jim Beaulieu as well as Coach Smyrski and Coach Ceppetelli helped to lead the team and keep the spirits high. The first game of the season was against Lebanon. This game went into four overtimes. In the last over- time the Raiders scored to give them a 6-0 win over the Solons. The strong J.V, team went from this de- feat and won their next three con- tests against Rice, North Country, and St. Johnsbury. After this they met many more powerful teams, and unfortunately were not quite as successful. In a couple more years with more experience and growth within the team, these boys will prove to be a good varsity football team. The fu- ture varsity teams will be exciting to watch. The team did something that has never been done—it beat Stowe in its last home game of the season, 2-1, and it also got the number four seed in the playoffs. This was the first time any Montpelier Field Hockey team has beaten Stowe or got seeded so high in the playoffs. The team went on to play Otter Valley in the Quarterfinals. After the team got on track, Montpelier dominated the game, which they won 2-0. In the semifinals the team went up against the number one seed and eventual State Champion, Burr Bur- ton. The game went 60 minutes with- out a score, it then went into overtime, and finally into sudden death. Burr Burton scored in the second sudden death period. The two captains of the team this year were Cindy Bruzzese and Carolyn Gid- ney. Cindy and Carolyn were also named to the NVAC Mountain Division All-Star team. Anne Czaplinski re- ceived an honorable mention. The team will lose eight seniors at graduation, but it has up and coming players to fill their shoes. The Seniors on the team were Cindy Bruzzese, Carolyn Gidney, Anne Cza- plinski, Miriam Novogrodsky, Beth Austin, Susan McDermott. Maureen O’Donnell, and Heidi Barker. The varsity boys fell one game short of the playoffs. The girl’s varsity team lost a tough playoff game to Vergennes in overtime. All the teams including the junior varsity boys and girls and freshman boys worked hard and were determined to win de- spite everything. Mr. Drew’s boys were fighting to the end to earn a playoff spot. Unfortu- nately playing a Division I schedule proved to be too much for the Solons. They stayed close in most games. Their losses were real heartbreakers. Many members of the team showed their skills by ending the season as top lead- ers in the Metro Division. Team cap- tains, Victor Pepin, Mark Biosvert, and Peter Johnson were in the top ten re- bounders. Michael Whitney and Chad Lilley placed in the top ten players in assists. The top ten scorers included Pat McGinley, Chad Lilley, and Victor Pepin. Mr. Crowley’s girls worked hard at long “Crowley time’’ practises which in the long run paid off. Their season’s record was good enough to get them into the Division II playoffs against Vergennes. This was a heartbreadkins game for in the last few seconds of overtime a long impossible shot was put up and went in. That one finished off their season. The Junior Varsity girls were very suc- cessful this year especially for having an eight player team. They came in third in the U-32 tournament at the end of the season. After the season ended the Varsity girl’s fathers took them on the first annual Father-daughter bas- ketball game. They had a lot of fun and hope that it will be an annual event. Coached by Brooke Pearson and Jeff Provost, the hockey team advanced to the semi-finals held at Gutterson Field House, UVM, for the fourth consecutive year. The Solons went up against the undefeated Hartford Hurricanes. Although Hartford went on to win the championship, the Solon team earned a great deal of respect and admiration from their coaches, parents, friends, fans, and rivals, for their team effort, strong will and sportsmanship. Butch Lovering, coach of the Hartford Hurricanes, was quoted, “Give Montpelier all the credit in the world. They scared up pretty bad. They did what they had to do. and Danny Aja was just phenomenal.’’ Dan made an incredible 54 saves in that game! Coach Pearson could only shake his head in amazement and disbelief over Dan’s performance. For once, he was speechless! Over all, Craig Marineau was top scorer, with a record of 26 goals and 26 assists. Joe Canales was next in line with 19 goals and 11 assists. Solon goalie, Dan Aja. had a total of 329 saves. Senior Winner Ed Rice Junior Winner: Michael Marsh U V M W r i t i n g C o n t e s t 184 Writing as an art is alive and flourishing at Montpelier High School. In the fall, two hundred students, grades 9-12, gathered in the cafeteria and wrote for forty-five minutes on top- ics designated by the University of Ver- mont and announced only at the time of the contest. They were competing in the Vermont Honors Competition for Excellence in Writing, sponsored by the University of Vermont. High school faculty members, representing several departments, judged the essays. The top tour winners were senior Ed- mund Rice, junior Michael Marsh, sophomore Justin Zimmerman, fresh- man Ames Robb. Second prizes were awarded Amy Gamble, grade 12; Kristin Fisher, grade 11; Erika Mailman, grade 10; Benjamin Sessions, grade 9. Third prizes went to Travor La Chapelle (12), Julie Murphy (11), Sarah Abbott (10), Steven Jen- sen (9). The first-place winners from each class advanced to a regional competition in February. The winning essays were on display in the Governor’s Corridor of the Pavilion Office Building in Montpe- lier in February. In order to spread more broadly the feelings of accomplishment among the range of competing students, cash prizes were awarded, thanks to the generosity of various community groups. The National Life Insurance Company donated the funds for all first prizes. Other donors: The Boosters Club, the Montpelier Education Associ- ation, the Montpelier Elks Club, and the Montpelier School System. In addition to the cash awards, each competing school received a plaque engraved with the names of the winners at the local and regional levels. This unique statewide contest originat- ed through the interest of an anony- mous donor who wishes to promote good writing among Vermont students. $150,000 has been provided over five years and will continue over another five years if eighty-five per cent of Ver- mont high schools are participating at the end of the first five-year period. Twenty finalists competed on the Uni- versity of Vermont campus in May. Winners on the state level were award- ed prizes as follows: Grade 12- first place, $4,000; second place, $2,000; third place, $1,000. Grade 11- first, $2,000; second. $1,000; third. $500. Grade 10- first. $1,500; second, $500, third. $250; Grade 9- first, $1,000; sec- ond, $250; third, $150. All other final- ists received $100 No conditions were attached to the money.
