■ m i ruj Jfear Full of Memories THE 1981 RECORD Montpelier High School Montpelier, Vermont 2 We, the graduating Class of 1981. dedicate this year’s Record to a friend and teacher who has offered us much during our four years at M.H.S. His sense of humor and personality never failed to come through to make life a little easier. He never let us down if we needed a smile or a laugh. Only he would wear a cowboy hat and earmuffs during a Vermont winter to brighten our spirits! He liked each of us for what we were and took the time to be a friend. This dedication is meant to mark his time spent with us rather than his leaving for a new career in early March. With thanks for everything and wishes for the best of luck always, we dedicate our yearbook to ... 2 Paul Simpson Contents Our Jumpin’ Year Seniors......... Underclassmen.. SENIOR OFFICERS: President Carl Pratt, Secretary Jennifer Wallace-Brodeur, Treasurer Kathy Drew, Vice President Dan Pierce. 14 — Seniors Chrissie catches up on the latest. To the Class of 1981: Tradition in many cases is accepted by people because it tends to denote stability, as well as a comfort level. Now and then a break from tradition in the form of a new way to accomplish an end result is good for all of us. You, the Class of 1981, have experienced a major break from traditional practices in that all 1981 graduates in Vermont must have met the Basic Competency requirements prior to being granted a diploma. While you may have felt at times that this was a real imposition and have asked the question, “Why us?' just keep in mind that change has to start at some point in time and if well handled will be of considerable benefit to those who follow. To this end you are to be commended in the way you have cooperated with the school staff and entered into the compe- tency process in a very positive manner. Your leadership qual- ities as a class reflect the individual initiatives which will be of considerable value to each of you in the years to come. Thanks for your help, and the best to each of you in your future endeavors. Edwin Jacobs. Previous attempts at re- suming production had failed, but with great enthusiasm, the 20 staff members published six issues during 1980-'8I. Hectic layout sessions and missed deadlines punctuated the year, but those on the staff found their work to be re- warding. A few members and the pap- er's advisors planned to attend a newspaper convention in Massachusetts in the spring. The outlook for the Solon- scope is bright for coming years. The Masques spring production also involved more than 40 people who helped make the sets and costumes, transforming the stage into a swirl of color and pomp. 12 THE CAST: Sue Allard Sarah Bates Amy Butler Alison Cheney Gita Cheney Stephanie Collins Peter Conlon Matt Czaplinski Kelly Drew Brian Dufresne Tracey Ellis Steve Folia Michele Frostick John Gibson Mary Greiner Duncan Hughes Alison Kelly Sean Murphy Jeff Otten Cheryl Paquette Ron Parker Lori Pratt Susan Quinn Heather Richmond Tom Rivers Chris Shepard Shawn Sweeney Tim Tomasi Jennifer Wallace-Brodeur Karla Wortman The cast joins in as Sue Allard sings “The Lusty Month of May. ' The queen and king of Camelot, Sue Allard and Brian Dufresne. inspect their kingdom. “I’m simply the best by far.’’ boasts Tim Tomasi. All was well in Camelot, the mythical land of King Arthur (Brian Dufresne) and Queen Guenevere (Sue Allard) until Lancelot (Tim Tomasi) arrived from France. Lancelot was disliked by the members of the court, so a joust with the strongest Knights of Camelot was set up for him. To the dismay of the court, Lancelot won all three contests and won the respect of the court. Lancelot and Guenevere, of course, fell in love and were discovered together by Mordred (Shawn Sweeney), King Arthur's illegitimate son. Guenevere was sentenced to burn, but Lancelot, who had escaped Mordred, rescued her and brought her back to France with him. The story ended on the battlefield in France where Arthur and Lancelot had to reluctantly lead armies against each other, 13 WN $ I «i . TKa. Girls’ Tennis The girls’ tennis team took over where they left off last year, compiling a 12-2 rec- ord overall, narrowly miss- ing a trip to the state finals. Although the team lost in the semi-finals 4-3 to Mt. St. Joseph, they will be a rough team to contend with next year. Boys’ Tennis The boys’ tennis team, de- spite having lost five seniors last year, still finished the 1981 season with an 8-5 rec- ord. Although they lost in the quarter-finals to South Burlington, they still ended the season with style and great expectations for next year. GIRLS — First Row.C. Cummings. L. Cody, J. Bolkum, B. The J.V. team, with 11 freshmen and seven sophomores, had a good season, ending up in May with an 8-7 record. The game the varsity probably will remember most is the win against Northfield on their field. The Solons came from behind and scored the necessary seven runs in the top of the 7th to go ahead and win the game 12-11. The varsity should be a strong team next year with only six seniors leaving. Hopefully, the 10 tough juniors will capably fill those mighty slots. A smile like this tells people you’ve been up to something. 20 Day. Shepard and Demingware take it easy. Team members played with spirit, and whether they lost or won, they always remained true sportsmen to the finish. Fans hope next year's crew will produce a winning season. They were led by a fine group of senior captains, Eddie Brigham, Matt Peterson and Carl List, and won the Southern District and finished second behind St. Johnsbury in the state meet. During the spring, records were broken and meets were won, but the coaches and fans will always remember this team for its cooperation, enthusiasm and friendship. The girls had a tough year, competing with mostly Class L teams and ending their season with a 4-6 record. They were fourth in the Class I states. The girls were well led by co- captains Carleen Pembroke and Lori Denis, and each runner concentrated on personal records and accomplishments. One exceptional runner, Lori Denis, finished second in the state in the 400-meter dash. She also won the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. The team is looking for a good year in 1982.
