— 1978 RECORD MONTPELIER HIGH SCHOOL MONTPELIER, VERMONT 4 1 Gratitude may appear in a multitude of forms; a look, a gesture, a spoken word. It may also take the form of a written work, expressing true feelings and emotions. With this dedication, we hope to convey our thanks to someone who has taught us, grown with us, and most of all, cared for us. Therefore, we, the graduating class of 1978, wish to dedicate this year's Record, with gratitude and much love to you — Romero Aja I •I 3 It was the age of wisdom ADMINISTRATION FACULTY STAFF To the Class of 1978 I would like to take this opportunity to extend my apprecia tion to the members of this class for the positive manner m which each of you reacted to the leadership change at the high school this year Many times a change in the principal- ship tends to have an adverse effect on particularly the senior class for many reasons. In your case this was not evident as representatives of your class took an active part in the screen ing process, others made themselves known prior to school opening last fall, and in general the supportive attitude taken by the class has been excellent. Needless to say, the carryover of a similar approach to, as well as a healthy attitude toward change, will be of great bene fit to each and every one of you in the years ahead. Best wishes for happiness and success in future years. Charles B. Johnson Superintendent of Schools As you leave Montpelier High School, I begin. I guess we both expert ence similar feelings of excited anticipation for what the future holds yet a degree of uncertainty for the yet unknown. As I have been amply reas sured by your presence and assistance this year, let me offer my words of reassurance to you. Even though my life at Montpelier High School has to date been brief, I can honestly tell you that you are fortunate, beyond your current awareness, to be graduating from one of Vermont's finest high schools The academic and co-curricular experiences that you have enjoyed here are uniquely excellent. You. with the support of the faculty, school direc tors and a concerned citizenry, have given Montpelier High a sense of pride and achievement unparalleled in my experience as a Vermont edu cator. Take with you those rare gifts of dedication, honesty and compassion that I have so repeatedly witnessed in you, and the world will be blessed by your presence and you will be blessed by your own abilities. Edwin H. Jacobs Principal Students are the most important elements in a school and their habits and reactions quite largely determine its stand- ing. The better schools are those in which there is a con- sciousness on the part of students that they share equal responsibility with the faculty for establishing and maintain- ing good school practices and traditions. Over the past four years many of you were instrumental in establishing good school practices and traditions. You are leaving Montpelier High School imprinted with many fond memories of the Class of 1978 All of you are now faced with the greatest challenge you will ever be faced with. That chal- lenge is to enter the adult world, live a lifetime in it and leave it with the knowledge that once again each of you were responsible for establishing good practices and traditions. Practices and traditions that others will observe and live with which will hopefully continue this country’s great heritage Good luck and my most sincere congratulations to the sen ior class. All too soon yesterday is only a memory, and tomorrow advances at an alarming pace. The world awaits us, and serenity becomes a long forgotten gift. Suddenly we are beset by urgent questions for which there seem to be no answers. But then hope resurfaces, supporting us, bringing with it answers to our questions, a new surge of confidence, and serenity. 22 A FLASH FROM THE PAST 1 Sue Huntsman 2. Faith Brown 3 Mary List 4. Coach Simpson and Coach Morrison The 1977 Varsity Football team com- pleted a successful season with an overall record of 7-2 which left them at 2nd place in the Northern Conference. It was one of the rainiest falls on record, but still the games were well played and closely contested. The final game of the season, at Spauld ing, was a real cliff hanger, which they won by scoring with only 3 seconds remaining on the clock. Of the 36 players on this year’s team, 18 were seniors. Without a returning starter, with no player over 6'1 and with a league overall better balanced than usual the task of winning became a major challenge. The season began on a negative note with 5 straight losses before a victory over Bellows Falls in the Springfield Tourney turned the tide. At this writing we can only guess at the final win-loss record, but most important to the players is the hope of still winning 8 games to qualify for the State Class L Tourney. If this becomes a reality they will have kept alive a string of 10 straight years into tourney competi- tion. Standing at 6 wins and 9 losses, they will have to win 2 of the last 5 contests. At this % mark of the season, the individual statistics show a fine balance among the players. David Brigham 52% and David Nelson 44% lead in field goal percentage. George Graves is shooting free throws at a 77% clip while Nelson (136) and Mark Wasik (91) are the leading rebounders. Schuyler Azur leads in assists. This has been a team with great spirit and desire. The wins may be fewer, but the unselfishness and dedication of its members rank it with the best to represent M.H.S. in a long time. Come on, you guys! Give me a break. 68 Get psyched! Pass it! I'm open! Help get me out of this mess! FRESHMAN BASKETBALL 1st Row: J. Anders, K. List, C. Kimble, E Brigham, T Prevost, R Nelson, B. The girls' basketball team finished its season with its best record to date 5 13. The highlight was the team’s 1 st game when they beat the rivals, Spaulding, by a score of 41 37. Playoffs eluded the team, but with the girls returning next year, the team should make a good showing Junior Varsity This year was disappointing as they finished with a record of 3-15. The highlight was a 1 point win over Oxbow after coming back from a 22 0 halftime. There is much talent on the team and prospects look good for next year Jump it up, Lisa! Get the rebound, Cathy! It was a very competitive season for the Hockey team this year and the league as a whole. It was a year in which any team could knock off any other team. The team took their lumps and losses but not without a fight. Of the 7 losses, 6 were by one goal, and the 7th was by 2. With only 4 seniors graduating the team is relatively intact. These seniors are D. Kingston, S. Provost, L. White, and B Peter son. An announcement has also been made that Mike Lyons, the standout Jr Defenseman will be traveling Europe and will not be with the team. We wish these guys the best and extend thanks for an excellent effort on and off the ice. The team and I would like to thank Randy the bus driver; Ms. Kay Olmstead; the cheerleaders and the fans for their excellent support. It was and is always very much appreciated. The Cast of DIRTY WORK IN HIGH PLACES A Saga Rich in Human Folly, Inspirational Romance, and Treachery Unchecked! Dauntless defends the desperate from the doers of devilish deeds. This year, the Masque, directed by Mr. and Mrs. Ryback, performed DIRTY WORK IN HIGH PLACES. Described as “an old-fashioned mellerdrammer with a sidesplitting modern twist,” this production was a musical. The hard work and talent of the directors, crews, and per- formers of Masque made this a play that was enjoyed by all. Preparing another dastardly plan. Still up to no good, no doubt. 'Oh, he just can’t take our Humble Cottage away from us!” 119 Highlighting this year’s winter carnival was a pie-eating contest. Although all the participants plunged into piles of whipped cream and apple pie, none could beat Alfred Bredice. The carnival, under the direction of Joy Facos, also featured traditional events like basketball, broom hockey, skiing, thigh pad, and snow sculptures. Baby Blue set the beat for a dance on Tuesday night. After all the events were totaled at the end of the week, the mighty Seniors came out on top with 45 points, followed by the Juniors with 20 points, the Sophomores with 1 7 points, and the Frosh w with 12 points.
