Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1977 volume:

DEDICA TION A dedication is only words, abstract ideas pieced together to express gratitude. Yet our thanks goes beyond the confines of letters; it is a living acknowledgment of your true concern and care for everyone with whom you come in contact. Although we are leaving M.H.S. this year and take with us the memories of many acquaintances, we would like to attempt to express our appreciation to you through this honor. We only hope it can tangibly symbolize our heartfelt thanks for a job well done. Therefore, we, the class of 1977, dedicate this year's Record to our school librarian — Edna Cassort 3 Standing here We look back On the year behind us. . . With pride or regret, With laughter, with tears; With love So m uch has passed, So many things, Once missed, Are gone forever. 5 And now - We must look forward For a new day has begun i v L r tea. Ti' 6 The time has quite rapidly been fulfilled that your comple- tion of your high school career is at hand. You now are in the process of developing those plans that will soon lead you down the many diverse paths of your futures and your careers. As your plans continue to take form and substance, keep ever before you the spirit of the Founding Fathers of our State as, in 1777, they moved forward in the face of the Unknown, in the face of Uncertainty and along pathways untravel led, to build a home for us all. With their spirit, travel forward now, as those Green Mountain people did 200 years ago, in a renewed example of courage, seeking for freedom and believ- ing in unity. As this spirit is emblazoned on our State flag, so let it always act as a guiding beacon to you, the members of the Class of 1977. May our Green Mountain State enjoy a rein- forcement of its beckoning promise through the fine abilities and good works you can bring about. Good Luck and Godspeed. _ r Bruce E. Stewart Principal CLASS OF 1977 It seems as though it was only yesteryear when you were carefree Freshmen uncomplicated, unentangled, ready for any- thing. Now, four years later, as the Class of 77, you stand on the threshold of the future full of wonderment, not quite cer- tain, reticent to leave one minute, can’t wait for the year to end the next. Decisions, questions, decisions, more questions. Where do I go? What do I do? Will I be a success? Have I made the right choice? Are there any real answers? You’ve made it — you’re on your own. This phase of the maturation process is now complete We hope your years in the Montpelier schools have been a positive experience. One that will stand you in good stead as you seek answers to your questions and make your decisions wisely. Congratulations and Good Luck! Charles B. Johnson, Superintendent of Schools I sincerely hope all of you leave here with an enthusiasm for the real values of life and with an appreciation of the fact that the school and the community had provided you with a setting in which you had the opportunity to grow into healthy, productive adults, capable of making wise decisions affecting your future occupations and life styles. One of the most beautiful compensations of life is to know that one cannot sincerely try to help others without in turn helping himself. I thank each and every one of you for this opportunity. Congratulations and the very best, always. George E. Sulima Assistant Principal 8 MRS PEG AYER — Guidance MR GENE WASIK — Guidance MS KAY OLMSTED MR FRED JACEK — Guidance MRS. Many outstanding runners were even more outstanding this year: Tony Bates and Doug Brigham, to name a few. Only one team beat them twice and that was the league champion, while seven games of the season were decided by one or two points with the Solons winning five of these Upsets became commonplace after a while. A fourteen point fourth quarter by Bill Yacavoni led M.H.S. to a 66-65 upset over Rutland; two crucial hoops by Barry Barrett enabled M.H.S. to beat Spaulding 67-65; while George Sabens hit a field goal at the buzzer to bring a one point victory over South Burlington. Two of the biggest upsets of the year occurred when Shawn Drew hit an eighteen-foot jumper to beat Burlington High School (the eventual State Champions) 60-58, and Bill Yacavoni hit a shot from the baseline to bring a 56-55 playoff victory home against Essex. The season concluded in a 79-56 loss to second-seeded Wind- sor in the State Class L Quarterf inals. The most valuable player award was voted to Mark Lewis by his teammates, while they also chose Mark Lewis and Shawn Drew as their permanent captains for the past season. It was a 500 season, but in terms of output, desire, and team cohesiveness, it was a winning year all the way. Talking i( over. Two the hard way Hondo Jump it up' jo Jo Pistol Fighting for it. K Drew, E Pratt, K Graves, Coach Kimble 86 Wave goodbye to the ball Concentration The record for the season could be divided into rwo seasons The first half was the most productive, with seven wins and three losses. During this period of time, the play was characterized by some excellent teamwork The second half of the season, although not productive of many wins, was one of fine overall hustle, but was also one of illnesses, of defections, and the loss of one ball player to the varsity team As a climax to the season, the team voted for the player whom they would choose to lead them as captain if they had the season to do all over, and this honor went to Terrence Conlon. The final team record was 9 wins and 11 losses It’s more fun on the bench! Hustling back on defense Jump it up, Dave! FRESHMAN BASKETBALL lsc ROW (1 to r): G Canas. P Rowe, B Cody, Coach Drew, D. Success in a sport is a beautiful thing . but it involves the efforts of many. This year’s team performed very well due to senior leadership, underclass balance and depth, tremen- dous student body and community support, faithful cheerlead- ers (and advisor), and a rink to practice on daily. Sometimes dulled by clouds, lost in a haze, subdued and distant. Only to emerge burning, shining, glowing — spreading golden rays of hope, warmth . . . love. Rising in the east, sinking in the west. The sun touches all in the course of a day. Although we have learned and played and loved The setting of the sun now separates us from today. Let us lift our faces to the dawn To a new day, a new beginning. In the rise of the sun lie our hopes, our dreams, our future. May the Class of 1977 live in sunshine all the days of their lives And in the dusk of our lives, let us pause and remember Other sunsets. Ikl.i'fJ . 'y Vv-.u ir We would like to thank Mrs Canavan, Mrs. MacDonald, and Mr. Lizzari for their time and concern which made the 1977 Record possible. Taylor Publishing Company [Inedco
